We are located in Middle TN. Ferrell Hollow Farm Senior Horse Sanctuary provides permanent retirement care to special needs senior horses, primarily of the draft breed as well as senior cats. NEW for 2017-we have created a Senior Cat Sanctuary on the farm as well for cats aged 15 and over. We currently care for 10 horses and 20 cats!
Isaac is having some inflammation in his left eye. He is blind in both eyes but can still have uveitis flare-ups. Currently, he is being treated 2x a day and wearing a Guardian Eye Mask. This was last night after taking it off at sunset 😍 He is a big sweetheart.

We had a nice weekend, but boys, it will get hot again!
Big update: the size boot he normally wears is not staying on during the night, and a size down is too small. Once his feet are trimmed, hopefully we can get one to work!
He is very arthritic in many joints, receives supplements, medication and gets trouble areas massaged 🥰
He is a very sweet and laid-back old fella ♥️
Caturday updates:
Scruffy had a short round of antibiotics, he did not tolerate the medication very well, but once we stopped it, he is feeling a lot better!
Bugga has had a terrible time with diarrhea and not feeling well. He is on several medications and we have finally gotten him feeling a little better.
Raja is waiting on his monthly arthritis medication to arrive, once that gets in his system, he will be feeling better.
Olive, well as you can see, she is just PURRFECT! 😻

Theron is taking refuge in his barn from the nasty biting horseflies. We need them to go away!
Isaac is a highly trainable blind horse. After building and establishing trust and rapport, he loves working with Momma. Theron spends a lot of time inside the barn to get away from horseflies. Isaac had to be taught where Theron was and is willing to stand at the mat under the fan while his companion stays inside the barn. He is such a good boy, and we love having him!

Minnow (18) & Vanilla (16) have been experiencing increasing medical issues as they age. It takes a lot of trial and error, patience and consistency to find the right food, medications, etc to help their varying conditions. It is hard to watch them decline as they age but we are always dedicated to improving their quality of life for as long as we can, and they let us.

Draft horses really don't like our TN heat and humidity, but Isaac has been handling it quite well!
Bo is given the opportunity every afternoon to wander from his man cave, but rarely does. Today, I caught him happily snacking on another cats food that Momma forgot to take up 😆
Scruffy has had a hard to treat ear infection with sneezing and nasal discharge. We are starting him on oral antibiotics and hope it helps! He has become such a lovebug, and we want to see him feel better ❤️
Olive is doing a good job of staying cool during our week of very hot weather 🥰

Finn update: Finn has not thrived this year as he has in the past. These photos show what he looked like last summer vs what he looks like now. The most noticeable difference is his coat has not shed out despite regular grooming. In older horses, this is a characteristic of Cushings Disease, which is an endocrine imbalance. He is also a bit thinner. We are taking steps to address this and keep him healthy, but he does need more sponsors due to his increased care costs. You can set up a recurring donation thru our website, or contact us for other ways to help.

Minnow is on special eye drops for her eye condition. She has limited eye sight now, but can still navigate her way around her room. She is a sweet lady 💕

We lost our lovely Macaroni yesterday to advanced Kidney failure 💔
She was a beautiful, kind soul who was a pleasure to care for in her golden years. She was 20 (and a half) years old! She held on strong after loosing her mates Noodle, and then Bob, but over the past week began failing.
Rest easy sweet girl, you are carefree now and we will miss those beautiful green eyes of yours. You will always have a special place in Momma's heart ❤

Today, we celebrate 6 months of caring for Isaac 🥰 He came to us in February, and while his back-story is a bit dodgy, we do know that he was not cared for properly in his past. Untreated eye inflammation leading to blindness, shaggy, itchy coat and terribly hooves tell that story. Fortunately he was pulled to safely and then it was just meant to be that he came to our Sanctuary for his Forever Home!
Isaac is in his early 20's and completely blind. While blind horses can lead a good quality life, it does take consistency & patience and a lot of special management to keep them safe and happy.
When he first arrived, he was nervous (rightly so) as he had to learn everything about his fence boundaries, where his water was, where he got fed, where the hay was, who his equine companion was, and his caretakers voice and schedule. It was a lot for him to take in.
Theron had lost Tom a few months before and was not so sure about this new Gentle Giant who wanted to cling to his every move. He had always been the quiet guy who did his own thing. But he also taught Isaac boundaries.
Then Momma Cindy made a huge decision-to move them from the large paddock into a large pasture! Theron needed more space and I was sure Isaac would adapt, with our help of course. He had to re-learn everything all over again! A risky decision, but one I was confident about. It was a lot of work getting him to adjust to a new, larger space, and re-learn everything all over again, but the risk has definitely been a reward for everyone! Theron is much happier, Isaac had to learn to be a tiny bit independent, and hopefully these photos show how much he is thriving!
Isaac is a very personable, loving and goofy big fella. He follows Momma like a puppy dog and loves to be groomed and of course he LOVES treats!!
While managing a huge blind horse has it's own unique set of challenges, we are so honored to be the ones caring for him in his golden years 💖
