On Saturday November 9th something I never could have imagined happened to my 1 1/2 year old service dog Outlaw.

While playing fetch using the chuck it stick and ball. My Lab and German Shepherd both jumped at a full sprint and collided head first trying to catch the ball.

When Outlaw hit the ground he was screaming in a way I had never heard a dog sound. He couldn't stand or walk after. I rush him to the Elko emergency vet and waited in the lobby for 3 hours.

The vet suspected that with the force of the impact from the collision, when Outlaw landed he tore both Cranial Cruciate Ligaments at the same time. After x-rays and testing it confirmed in his case Bilateral TPLO sugery is needed and the sooner the better.

This is an extremely expensive unexpected expense. Estimated around 6k. We do have nationwide pet insurance however we learned after his injury that bilateral injuries are excluded from the policy because they are so common and extremely expensive.

This past May Outlaw attended to an 8 week service dog board and train program in Koosharem, Utah and came home ready to work. It was thousands of dollars but we were able to save and make payments. He has been the best dog a girl could ask for and it’s truly tragic that this has happened to him.

This injury has happened only 3 months into his service dog career. The longer the delay of surgery the longer he is out of work. The recovery time from surgery is 4-6 months.

Update on Outlaw 8 days after his injury.

He is doing much better! He is his happy lil self again! His pain is managed. But I try not to keep him outside because the cold makes it worse. He kinda struggles to stand up but once he is standing he is able to put pressure on both back legs and do like a crippled hobble not for long and he doesn't use his left leg as much. I do try to keep his hobbled to a minimum.

Azula has been by his side.Good sister she is! 🖤🖤unfortunately I have hurt my back with all the carrying him I've been doing. He isn't eating as much and has lost a little weight but he is drinking water well. He's back on a regular potty schedule. He usually loves the snow but I'm guessing the cold made him ache more so he didn't want to stay out long. He has been ears down and tail tucked most of the day. 😥

Yesterday I took Outlaw to the vet again. He was in so much pain all weekend I had to do something. I took him to his primary vet instead of the vet clinic that seen him for the emergency visit.

His primary vet gave him a morphine injection and he was able to p**p for the first time in 3 days! He was also able to hobble briefly! He is not supposed to bare weight but I am so happy his pain is now more managed and they prescribed him two meds that really help him!

Today is the day after his injuries. My sweet pup wagging his tail for the first time in two days. 😭💖 He apparently has a shy bladder because he will only go potty if I’m not looking at him. He’s going to have to get over that. He needs a bath now. He is drinking lots of water but barely made a dent in his food. He is still whining and licking in pain but it’s definitely gotten a little better.

Today was a very rough day. Outlaw blew both knees out and can’t walk at all. He needs TPLO surgery on both knees. It’s going to be a long and expensive road to recovery.
