The difference between true Balanced training vs the compulsive training that the Gucci Turd pretends is balanced.
Time for some clarity.
Being a balanced trainer means:
* corrections such as "no", a light leash pop to help redirect the dog's attention back to me, denying the dog what they want until they can remain calm and not pull
* exposure to triggers over time to help the dog learn how to cope with and better manage their emotions and responses;
* using praise, food, toys, and touch as rewards - but also, using the environment as a reward system (e.g. sniffing a spot they're curious about)
* setting and enforcing rules and boundaries
* giving the dog very clear expectations about which behaviours will and will not be permitted or tolerated (e.g. no jumping)
* using a system of reward and consequence to help the dog learn how to behave in a harmonious, calm manner with people and other animals
* using specific tools other methodologies rant against only as a last resort, and only as a temporary measure - only until the wanted behavior is created and is being maintained
Good, balanced trainers understand that dogs with problem behaviors are struggling with some underlying issue. We work hard to find the cause FIRST, before we work on a plan to help change the way the dog feels about their trigger/triggers. But, we also set out very clear expectations for the dog, and we don't negotiate. If we have to repeat something a thousand times in order to help the dog learn what will and won't be tolerated, then that's what we do. But, at no time do we EVER hurt, traumatize, or abuse the dog.
Balanced trainers are being shamed, vilified, and bullied by other training methodologies all the time. It's been this way forever, and it will never change. But before you decide that we are abusive, mean, "outdated", or any of the other terms that are thrown on us, please just take a minute and think about this: "Balanced" is really just a fancy term for common sense. There's no political correctness involved, no coddling of unwanted behaviors. It's just common sense in action - and it works.
Have a great evening and a great week, and remember to stay calm and lead on.
