Northern Lights Horse Rescue Share tips, safe practices, and available resources. Across the US there are equine rescues who do vital educational as well as rehabilitative work.

We collaborate with horse rescuers and rescue supporters to support horses in crisis in the New England area (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island). Valiant as these organizations are, however, they cannot take in every horse in need. So every month private farms get calls from animal welfare, animal control, and law enforcement agents to take in horses who a

re starved, abused, neglected, or bound for slaughter. We seek to support these unrecognized heroes who, outside of major fundraising channels, nonetheless give your hearts, hay, and personal home budgets to do the right thing by these magnificent creatures. NLHR is a collaborative network of like-minded people who share our goal of banishing abuse from the human/equine experience.

SNEAK PEAK: each month we will be doing an educational post. For September, we will be talking about water. Why water? Because water is VERY important to horses especially during hot months. So stay tuned and watch how we hydrate our horses here at 🐴❤

Honeybun Nina is a cute, young, 14.1 hh Standardbred mare who's never seen the track. She's got the characteristic warm personality of a Standardbred, but the only thing she has in common with her former racing brethren is that she, too, somehow was on the truck bound for slaughter. We're so very happy she was rescued. Now she's looking for a job to do. Nina is too young and healthy to just be out to pasture, so we're hoping she'll go to a home that's both experienced in training green horses and kind in doing so. We're on the lookout for the right match for Nina. Let us know if you now someone who might be a good fit -- someone who's looking for a horse as a friend as well as pleasure rider or driver, to suit Nina's social personality and natural curiosity.

Rusty's Rascal is a retired Standardbred racehorse who charms all who meet him. He's tall, lanky, spunky and big-hearted, and tends to keep a bit of a mohawk look with his mane. He has taken on a new middle name, "Some Kind of Special," because this lucky boy has benefited from rescue support by not one, but two former owners, who helped ensure his safe return to Maine instead of being slaughtered in Mexico or Canada. The countdown had been upon him in the kill pen. Now it's time to help ensure his long-term safety. Rusty has had a heart condition all of his life, we learned, but the vet thinks that it's now progressed to where he would be a safer companion animal than a pleasure riding horse. So he's hoping to go to a qualified home soon where he can be just that.

Aqualou is a 17 year old gelding who we believe suffered a bad accident, as evidenced by the spinal and neurological damage that make it hard for him to be entirely confident of his hind legs. Somehow, however, his spirit was not broken, even when he was routed from auction to the kill pen and bound for slaughter. He was seriously underweight and clearly did not feel well at the time, either. But big-hearted volunteer Helen didn't want to give up on him, and she organized his bail with the aid of the Standardbred Retirement Fund. He gained a bit of weight in QT nearby, but once sent to his NLHR member farm, he's been steadily gaining weight, confidence, and a good quality of life. He's a hugger, too, which just amazes us, after all that he's been through. Although unsuitable to ride, his big heart makes him a favorite. Support for Aqualou continues to go to high-qualify feed in addition to hay to help him gain weight for the winter that lies ahead. He'll need blankets come winter, as well. He's got high quality turnout and, like many ex-racehorses, enjoys his snuggly stall, where he's got free choice to go in or out.
