Westmeath Spca Looking out for the welfare of the animals of Westmeath since the 1950's, Westmeath SPCA promote responsible animal ownership. This page is run by volunteers.

This page is not monitored, no messages, no comments. Founded near Mullingar in 1952, the Westmeath SPCA has looked out for the welfare of the animals of Westmeath with care and respect. Westmeath SPCA is entirely volunteer run and is a registered charity, CHY11491. We rely on the public to report cases of animal cruelty or hardship. In April 2016 we welcomed our new inspector to work on the front

line with animal welfare. The welfare of an animal includes its physical and mental state, and good animal welfare implies both fitness and a sense of well-being. An animal's welfare should be considered in terms of 'five freedoms'. Freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition;
Freedom from discomfort;
Freedom from disease and injury;
Freedom to behave normally;
Freedom from distress and Fear. We are always looking for volunteers to help and donations are always gratefully accepted. https://www.idonate.ie/3730_westmeath-spca.html

Update on the ban due to commence Feb 1

From last October, it became illegal to breed, sell, rehome or import the dogs.

The High Court has temporarily paused a new regulation due to come into force tomorrow that would have allowed agents for the Minister for Rural Development to seize or euthanise XL Bully dogs in the care of animal welfare organisations.

It will remain in force until 27 February when a full hearing on a challenge to the new regulations for the breed will take place.

Meanwhile, new figures show that 235 certificates of exemption have been issued so far.
