PUPDATE: Sherman responded well to the antivenom. After a day at the ER and many bloodtests, fluids and careful monitoring he was allowed to go home that night with an optimistic outlook. He felt 100% better by the next day. The neighbors reported the snake was enormous! Sherman will be keeping his nose to himself from now on! We maxed out two credit cards paying his bill. Your help will be much appreciated.

We had a terrible weekend with one of our favorite boys. Our senior boy, Sherman, was bitten by a rattlesnake in his foster home and was immediately rushed to the doggie e.r. It’s been pretty touch and go and as most of you know, these bites can be lethal to a dog. At the very least, they are very, very sick and blown up like a balloon, then when healing starts, the skin sloughs off like a bad sunburn. It can take months to fully recover from this. We racked up a pretty big bill, approximately $3,500.00 to save his life. We really need help with this from our rescue family. Anything, no matter how small, would be appreciated. Every dollar will add up and as always we truly appreciate your help. We can’t do it alone and without your help we wouldn’t be able to absorb these huge ‘unplanned’ bills. Of course no one ever plans on a dog being bitten by a rattlesnake, but emergencies do come up and we have to act quickly. Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

We have recently pulled this sweet older gentleman from the shelter. Isn’t he a handsome boy!! Snicker found himself in the shelter when his human had to go into assisted living. Snickers is about 10 years old and a bigger boy at 32-ish pounds, but he is not fat. Just a bigger boy. He is very calm and quiet, seeks out people for petting, and basically an all around great dog. We will be having him checked out medically as quickly as we can, but we do know that he will need some bloodwork so we can do a dental. Not unusual for a dog this age to need some dental work. We know he was loved and cared for, since he went into the shelter all nicely groomed. We are assuming the owner had it done so he would be more adoptable! He is currently loving having a nice yard to toddle around in, he is not a fan of crates, but according to the owner surrender paperwork he is good with other dogs and all people. He has met a younger boy, but we have not be able to test him with toddler sized people yet. He does chase cats, but is that is probably his only fault. He is housebroken already too. Wow! Who needs a nice companion that still has years left in him? He will be available as soon as we can get all his medical taken care of, which won’t be too long. If you can help offset those expenses, we would sure appreciate it. We will post an update in a week or so after he has been the vet and get a better idea of what (if anything) else needs to be done. As always, we thank you for your help!

Meet our newest friends, Blake and Toby. Blake is the buff and white, and Toby is the black and white. Both boys are one the larger size for cockers (over 40 pounds) and are currently living in Washington. Sadly, their original owner no longer could take care of them and basically handed them off to a relative who is already overwhelmed with her own personal 5 dogs and does not have her own house until after the first of the year. These boys are sweet boys, but they have not been socialized with other dogs, so the situation is very hard. The boys are spending a lot of time in crates just to keep the peace. This is not good for them and the kind hearted lady who is taking care of them knows that. She wants them to have a good life. They have common issues, cherry eye, dry eye, cocker ears and skin allergies. She is willing to help out with medical expenses, but really needs to get them out of her temporary home and into a foster or adoptive home. They are in Washington State and need help quickly. We think it would be ok to separate them as some of the behavior may tone down if they are separated. (Litter-mate syndrome). Both boys are 6 years old and neutered and housebroken. If you can foster or adopt one or both, we want to hear from you. It would be best to go to a home with no other pets until they can be socialized properly. Blake is initially more shy than Toby, and Toby is more active. If you can help, please let us know! They are ready to go now.

Daisy is a sweet 12 year old, completely blind girl. She is very tentative and hesitant due to her blindness. She does not walk on a leash, she doesn’t want to go outside and basically all she does is lay in her bed, occasionally getting up to eat and for a drink of water. She is not housebroken and often steps out of her bed, pees and goes right back to laying down! On the positive side, Daisy is very quiet. She flinches when you touch her, even when she knows you are there. She is not much of an interactive pet but she still deserves love. Please know that if you take her in, accidents in the house will be the norm. We don’t want to be negative about her, but unfortunately this is what she is.

Buddy is a young Cocker who's full of fun and energy. While he likes attention he also wants to be doing something like playing ball or maybe going for a run. Buddy may be an excellent candidate as a hunting dog, which is what Cocker Spaniels are bred to do since he's a natural retriever. He likes water and is crate trained. Check out this handsome guy! We were contacted by Animal Services in Puyallup, Washington asking for our help with this boy that came in as a stray. We were fortunate enough to find a foster in Oregon, and extend our thanks for Elizabeth and Kathy for their assistance in transporting this boy. Once he is all vetted and groomed, he will be available for adoption. Age is a mystery right now, but somewhere probably around 8 years old and estimated weight is 25-30 pounds. He is not neutered, and we will need to run bloodwork on him (due to age) to make sure he is healthy enough for surgery. A dental will probably also need to be done as will any routine things. Our foster mom says he jumped right into a crate in the car, which would lead us to be believe he is crate trained. He is very agile and likes to run and play and he is a ball chaser! He also came from the shelter with a case of kennel cough, so nothing can be done until that is resolved. We will post new pictures of him once he is groomed and we have had an initial vet check (gotta check those ears and eyes) so we know exactly what we might be dealing with. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated and to the adopters in the Pacific Northwest, get your applications in soon. This beautiful sable boy won’t be available long.

This sweet boy is at Metro Animal Services in Puyallup, Washington. They have asked for our help. But we will need a foster in WA or OR before we can commit. Can you help?

We first brought you info on Rocky back in early June. See his shelter pictures in this post. He was a mess then (owner surrendered to the shelter) and although progress has been made, he still has a ways to go. We have discovered has a Grade 3-4/6 heart murmur and his horrible ear continues to be a horrible ear! We have been trying to reduce the swelling in the ear JUST to get a look inside the ear canal and are now coming to the conclusion that it might not be swelling, but might be a tumor of some sort. The vet can’t even get a scope into the ear canal it is so closed off. We flow of ick has stopped and the hot spots and huge sore on his ear (from scratching at it) have been resolved. We had to give him a steroid injection, which you don’t want to do with a dog with a heart problem. But we had to do something. We are still treating it as an infection, but now have to decide if he can undergo anesthesia to cut into that mass and get the ear canal open. He also desperately needs a dental, so we are really struggling with this. We feel at this point that we need to proceed and take the risk with anesthesia, because without resolving that ear situation, his discomfort will persist long term. Not fair to him at all. We have already racked up a lot in vet bills with just the preliminary stuff, and we haven’t even gotten to the main event! If you can help us at all, Rocky will thank you as will we. We committed to this boy and need to do right by him. Please help us to get him taken care of. Our fundraising goal is $1,500. Once he is all better, he will be a great companion pet to a lucky person.

Cuteness overload! Candy is as sweet as they come. She’s an 8 week old puppy. She’s playful and working on her manners. She loves to eat and sleeps through the night. She’s healthy and had her first round of vaccinations. We’re not sure what kind of mix this little girl is or how big she’ll grow to be, but she’s adorable and wants to play, cuddle and be part of a family. Check out sweet little Peaches! This precious little girl came to us as a retired breeding dog. Yet, she is only two years old! Turns out she has a little problem, but it is easily solved. Our petite girl, all 20 pounds of her, has a bladder stone. Fortunately she has a struvite stone, so prescription food and antibiotics will take care of it. She also would have a bladder infection, since that is often the initial cause of the stone(s). She was caught early and only has one stone, so we will be able to fix her up. She will need antibiotics to clear up the infection and will be on prescription food designed to prevent and/or dissolve stones for the rest of her life. She also needs to be spayed and all the regular stuff. We are looking for someone who is willing to foster her while she is being taken care of and would be interested in adopting once she is all medically cleared. Please know that the prescription food is pretty pricey (a 17 pound bag can cost close to $100) so be prepared for that as it will be life long. You will also need to have regular urinalysis done on her to make sure the stone doesn’t come back. If you can help us with her medical expenses so far or might be interested in foster to adopt, we would love to hear from you. Peaches is currently in Jamestown, so a foster in Northern California would be great. As always, thank you for helping us to help Peaches!

We are sad to say we have had a break into our feed barn this week. Someone climbed two locked gates and carried away 12 bags of Taste of the Wild dog food, 3 bags of cat food and many boxes of dog treats. While we have added more security measures we are saddened that someone would steal food out of rescue dogs mouths. This was very disheartening after all your generosity and support.

We are dealing with the extreme heat up here in Jamestown . The AC is a godsend for the dogs (and us). They have wading pools and misters. The temps are up to 105 so far and we are looking forward to a break in the weather.

We have our evacuation equipment handy. This is prime fire season and we have already had two fires that were a little too close for comfort. We could use a couple more plastic crates. We like to keep a few extra ones on hand just in case.

Daisy is our latest senior girl who has been clearly neglected for a long time. This beautiful little buff and white girl is just under 20 pounds and probably about 10-12 years old. She is visually compromised, but gets around with no problem. She is a little thin and as you can see in desperate need of a haircut. Sadly she was a stray, but that life is over now. She needs to be spayed and needs a dental badly. We will start the vetting process as quickly as we can, run bloodwork, etc. and get her all fixed up. Daisy is just one in a long line of neglected dogs/seniors we have taken in recently (like little Sydney, Mason, Willow, etc.) and we are amassing a lot of vet bills. We understand this is rescue and we typically don’t get beautiful, groomed “ready for the runway” dogs out of the shelter, but these seniors require a lot more medical just to make sure they are healthy enough for anesthesia. This sweet girl deserves our very best to get her life back on track, so anything you can possibly help with will be much appreciated. We were contacted by World of Angels Foundation yesterday morning about this sweet girl. Her owner had just sold her to a meat trader in Beijing China. They needed $1000 to transport her to the US. They didn't have the money. We only had a couple of hours to decide but of course the answer was yes. Once we get her, her adoption fee will be the same as all the rest so we need to figure out how to pay that thousand dollars that saved her life. We know it's a lot of money, but she such a sweet young thing not even a year old she deserves not just to live, but have an amazing life. Rescued from China meat market!

We were contacted by World of Angels Foundation yesterday morning about this sweet girl. Her owner had just sold her to a meat trader in Beijing China. They needed $1000 to transport her to the US. They didn't have the money. We only had a couple of hours to decide but of course the answer was yes. once we get her, her adoption fee will be the same as all the rest so we need to figure out how to pay that thousand dollars that saved her life. We know it's a lot of money, but she such a sweet young thing not even a year old she deserves not just to live, but have an amazing life. Meet Lloyd: We have just welcomed Lloyd into our Second Chance Cocker Rescue family. He is in foster in Newberg, Oregon. Check out his video-so adorable. Lloyd’s little personality is upbeat, perky, friendly, happy happy happy. He wants to be with his people getting loves and will follow us room to room, jumping up for loves. He’s getting along with all the other dogs, hasn’t really paid any attention to the cats. Lloyd is adorable! He’s super happy, friendly and a perky little guy. He is so grateful for some good massaging/petting/loving. He wants to bond with his own person so bad. Once we let him out to sleep on dog beds…he’s been perfect, sleeping through the night. Lloyd is partially sighted due to dry eye and doesn’t hear well. The sight only bothers him in low light. He is currently in foster in Junction City OR. Great with dogs and loves to meet new people.
