Update from Dusty (formerly Avery), one of our Second Chance Cocker Rescue alumni:

"Thanks, Elizabeth. May you enjoy Christmas and find grace, mercy, peace and JOY. Happy wishes for you and your own doggies, family and friends! May 2026 be better for each of us! Dusty is quite attached to me...still fearful of strangers. You will laugh that he can no longer possibly squeeze between the rod iron fence/gate 4-1/4" spaces. He must have been more of a puppy than we realized in the beginning."

Dusty was rescued by SCCR and adopted in 2024, and we’re so happy to see him thriving with his family. Thank you for the lovely update and holiday wishes!

Sending love and warm wishes to all of our alumni families and SCCR community this season! 🎄🐾

SCCR alum Merry (formerly Nala) is checking in with some holiday joy! 🎄🐾

Nothing makes us happier than hearing from our alums, and Merry’s update is one of those that makes you smile.
Here’s what her family shared with us:

"Merry, our adoptee last year, is doing very well in our home. She is almost blind with Glaucoma and cataracts, but that doesn't stop her. She goes on daily walks with the family and her brother Mitch. They chase balls together each day and love their car rides to the ocean.
She has been a blessing to our family."

This is why we do what we do. Thank you for loving her so completely, and thank you to our community for making stories like Merry’s possible.

A joyful pupdate from Connie about Benjamin (Benny), Otto, and Mork! We’re so grateful to Connie and her family for opening their hearts and home, and we love seeing Bennie thriving.

“Hi Elizabeth,

Benny has been with us for a week now and has settled in so beautifully. He has clearly been through obedience training and knows sit and heel, how to fetch, and to sit at heel when we stop. His sit is really good - very reliable, but oddly enough, he has no clue about “down.”

His appetite is good, and he spends hours wrestling with the other dogs. The wrestling is generally with one other dog at a time, and he has the energy and amazing athleticism to outlast both of the other two. I must say, though, afterwards he calms down beautifully and snuggles with us wherever we are in the house.

This photo is how all three of them help me clean the bathroom on Mondays…

Mork and Benny are enjoying chewing on their peanut butter bones. Benny seems to prefer eating close to the other dogs, and there haven’t been any scuffles at all.

Otto is looking on as Benny sleeps in a corgi pose.

Darrell and Benny sound asleep, sharing a pillow.

Thank you so much for bringing him into our lives. We feel so very blessed to have him.

In 2-3 months, when I feel that he has completely settled in, I’m planning on starting him on nose work, and I hope that we can get to the level that he will work with me as a conservation dog, helping me to find the wild orchids that grow as native species in Nevada. Here’s one of them, called “Hooded Ladies Tresses.” Detection dogs are now being used in several parts of the U.S. to help scientists find orchids and other rare plant species, too. I think Benny would love to have a job like that, and I know people in my area who could help us.

I hope you are well, and thanks again for all you do for dogs and their humans.

Best,
Connie”

Connie, thank you for sharing this beautiful update, and for seeing Benny not just for who he is now, but for all he can become. We are so touched by the love, enrichment, and purpose you’re giving him, and we can’t wait to follow his journey (especially if it leads to orchid conservation!). This is rescue at its very best.

We’ve really found our rhythm here at the Sanctuary in Jamestown, California.

Thanks to an incredible team, this place runs with heart, structure, and a whole lot of love. Howard, our on-site kennel manager, keeps everything running smoothly day to day, while Samantha oversees our clinic and serves as Head of HR for all staff. Together, they help ensure our dogs and our people are supported and set up for success.

Our kennel staff and volunteers do so much more than feed and clean. They walk the dogs, play ball, sit and cuddle, and make sure every dog feels safe, happy, and ready for their forever home. With huge yards and carefully matched play groups, our dogs have plenty of room to run, play, and just be dogs.

Each bungalow is heated in the winter, air-conditioned in the summer, filled with comfy beds, and includes a porch where the dogs can relax and watch the world go by. Nestled among the trees, the bungalows get wonderful natural shade during the warmer months.

Howard and his wife live on site to watch over the dogs, and the entire property is double-fenced for maximum safety and peace of mind.

Our clinic team is truly something special. Dr. Temple is amazing, and her staff could not be better. We’re so grateful for them. Because of this team, we’re able to offer low-cost spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and very soon… dentals!

We’re incredibly proud that we can take in dogs many other rescues can’t. With skilled staff and professional trainers, we work patiently with these dogs, carefully evaluate them, and place them in just the right homes. We’ve seen real miracles happen here. ✨

While we’re licensed for 30 dogs, we intentionally keep our numbers closer to 25 so we always have room when emergencies arise. We’ve even been able to help local rescues by housing small dogs when they needed support, because this work only succeeds when we work together.

We love this place, and we love sharing it. Please call Elizabeth anytime at 805-687-4674‬ to schedule a tour - we’re always happy to show off the Sanctuary and what we’ve built together.

Pupdate time! 💕 We absolutely love hearing from our alumni and their families, and this update from Ruthie (formerly Minnie) made us smile from ear to ear. Seeing our dogs thrive, grow, and be so deeply loved is truly the best part of what we do. Thank you for sharing this sweet glimpse into her happily-ever-after.

"Hello Second Chance team,

I can't believe it has been nearly a year since I picked up Minnie (Ruthie) in the pouring rain and took her home to Sacramento! I thought you might be curious to hear how she is doing.

Over the last year, she has grown a luxuriously soft and long coat and tail. She has learned how to do sit, down, come when called, and walk on a leash. She has made some new dog and people friends.

This fall we moved to a new house, where she has a huge backyard to roam. I often see her trotting around outside, investigating the garden and playing with her sister.

She loves to eat! She is a smart dog who is especially good with her nose, so she really enjoys playing with puzzles and scent-finding games. She also loves to cuddle and enjoys spending time on the couch curled up next to us.

And she is a happy dog. Probably the most joyful dog I have ever met. She literally bounces around the house with her tail wagging in a full circle like a propeller.

I hope you will share this update with the team, and tell them "thank you" from our family. We are forever grateful you matched us with her, she is a perfect fit and very much loved and adored. We also appreciate all of the work you all do to help other dogs have a safe landing spot, find their forever family, and the spay/neuter work you do in the community.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Lauren, Wes, and Ruth"

Stories like Ruthie’s are why we do what we do; from rainy-day pickups to joyful, propeller-tailed pups living their very best lives. Thank you to this wonderful family for loving her so completely, and for taking a moment to remind our team that every effort is worth it. Please keep sharing your pupdates… they mean more than you know. 🐾💛

We wanted to share an update from one of our amazing adopters, Pavlina, about her beloved Willow. Our hearts are with her, and we are so sorry for her loss.

"Our sweet Willow crossed over the rainbow bridge this morning😔. What a precious little girl she was. I could list a million quirky, funny, loving, and wonderfully peculiar things she used to do. Craig loved her happy little whimpering—her very effective manipulation tool. I laughed every time she grabbed a stick bone and held it in her mouth like ciggies. She would bark at new people in the house, but only for a while. She ate lying down, climbed any furniture she could, and was the prettiest, gentlest cookie eater. She was a homebody, the sweetest nurturer to other animals, the best car passenger, always under your feet (even on the stairs), and the biggest lover of her family. She was born on my grandpa’s birthday and Lymphoma took her from us today. Thank you, for the best baby girl we could have ever met. We will miss you forever, our gorgeous puppy girl. We were a perfect match and you were so deeply loved🤍"

Thank you for giving her such an amazing life. You were so loved, Willow and will always be watching over your family. Run free, sweet girl. 🌈❤️
