“Winter is coming!” ☃️❄️ And aren’t we all dreading it and all the mud that comes with it 🙄🙄

One massive must have for me this winter is the nettex seven day mud away spray. I actually think nettex employ a sorcerer when they make this as its so good! The muddy picture is what the fields looked like in a previous winter and the other photos are cherry’s legs WITHOUT washing! In the stable picture I hadn’t even brushed them!

I usually put this spray on around every 5 days and I find the mud just doesn’t stick to their coats, even without brushing once it dries it just flakes off which I find amazing since out of 4 horses there’s only 4 dark coloured legs 🤦🏻‍♀️. It’s also useful for the tops of their necks if you aren’t using a turnout hood and I’ve even used a little on their faces after patch testing.

The year I started using this is the first year I didn’t have any issues with mud fever too. As it’s oily it doesn’t seem to dry the skin out and it creates a barrier to all the wet!

Basically I love this product and cannot cope in the winter without it!

So I’ve been using the quick knot plaiting things. I do quite like them as they give a much nicer finish to plaits than just using plaiting bands.

They do have a couple of downsides if I’m being picky;
Price- it’s £24.95 for 100, I have 11 plaits down Jengas neck so if I treat them as single use that’s an expensive habit. That said I’ve reused one set and they were fine and I think they’ll go in again so as long as I’m careful about taking them out they’ll hopefully last a few times!
They’re a little fiddly to get the hang of compared to plaiting bands, my first attempt was... ok, but a little ick. That said it’s still MUCH easier than stitching in both for putting in and taking out!

They’re also not much quicker than banding up, although I did have that down to a fine art, they probably are a lot quicker than stitching though.

On the upside though they do look really good in as modelled by Jenga 😍😍so as long as I do get a few uses out of each of them I’ll be sticking with them!

So it’s not kit as such but it’s something I think is essential for anyone with their own horse transport- breakdown cover. It’s one of those things you pay for in the hope you never have to use it, but the day you need it you’ll be so thankful you have it.

I looked for cover separately to my insurance and went with OHTO who are through PRP rescue. They do a few cover options and I’ve gone for the one which gives full cover for trips of any distance.

I’ve had to call them out twice and I’ve been really impressed with them both times. The first time I had a tyre blow out on the A1(M) and I won’t lie I was completely freaked out since Jenga was stuck in the box on the hard shoulder with lorries and cars flying past. They had someone out in around 90 minutes who changed the tyre at the roadside for me- they were out quicker than the police/highways people responded! They were also very efficient and did everything they could to speed up the rescue as well as being patient with me being a tad crazy on the phone 🙄🙄.

The second time was today when I was an idiot and forgot to use the isolator meaning the battery on the lorry was flat- not good since we’re off to the area festival tomorrow 😱😱 they had someone attend sighing about 30 minutes who’s gotten everything sorted.

All in all a helpful company who haven’t let me down when it matters, and not too expensive considering the service they provide!
