Luna's adoption update!
Luna was adopted in March 2024 and she is doing great. She's a rocket dog! ❤ Her family shared this update and pictures: "Luna is fine. She is currently on her first family road trip to South Carolina. She doesn’t fully understand rain, but she has fun trying to follow the raindrops. She also loves the sun and sleeping on my desk while I work. She loves the new fence in the backyard because she can run around and “rocket dog.”"

It’s Secret Santa time for our forever fosters!!
Each year we like to do something a little special for our forever foster dogs who will remain in a BDRA foster home forever.
Here’s how it works: Each of our 8 forever foster dogs has come up with a wish list. If you would like to send one of them a gift or two from his/her list as a Secret Santa, please email Jen at [email protected]. You will be sent their wish list in order to chose the gift you’d like to send.
You can choose the foster you’d like to be a Secret Santa for or Jen can assign you a pup. Thank you!

Indiana's adoption update!
Indiana was adopted in June 2024 and all is going well. She has a best friend named Raven! ❤ Her family shared this update and pictures: "Indiana is doing so wonderful! She's grown 4 inches since adoption day, and weighs around 100lbs now!
She and our golden, Raven are best friends. They do almost everything together! Our Senior dane, Roki, is even starting to play with her now.
We love her so much, she's just fit in like she has always been here. Her favorite place to be is in a chair in our living room, I'm waiting to see what happens when she's too big lol."

07/11/2024

Meet Handi! Handi is a sweet 7 pound, 15 year old schnauzer/yorkie mix who sees and hears very little, and she's looking for her adoptive home. She was left at a Pennsylvania shelter in April 2024 by her owners; there was suspicion of cruelty/neglect, and her owners admitted they could no longer take care of her. Handi soon came to her Virginia Blind Dog Rescue foster home. Now Handi is looking for someone who is ready to step up to give her the very best chapter of her life! Her foster mom shares, "Handi is looking for someone who loves senior dogs and who wants to focus on giving her the best life which she so deserves in her older age. She will reward that person with her gentle love and will be a great companion on the sofa or in a lap." Please read more about Handi here: https://blinddogrescue.org/handi, and if you'd like to make Handi a part of your family, please complete an adoption application here: https://fs8.formsite.com/blinddogrescue/form758585118/index. Handi does have some medical issues that are detailed in her write up; please read through carefully.
Handi is being fostered in VA; however BDRA will transport to an approved adopter within a reasonable distance. Please email our Adoption Team at [email protected] if you have any questions about Handi or any of our other dogs.

People volunteer for us for many reasons, and we always love sharing their stories. Each one touches our hearts. ❤

"I became interested in helping blind dogs when a friend had a dog suddenly go blind and she could no longer take care of him. I started researching the subject with books and on the internet. Then another close friend had her dog Max go blind suddenly. She could no longer care for her dog either. I loved that dog, and since I had recently retired, I agreed to care for the dog.

I was immediately surprised at how easy it was to care for Max. He remembered; my home layout, my sighted dog Tyson, my truck, my back yard, etc. I was also very impressed with how happy, loving, friendly, and normal Max remained. He was in a very real sense, a completely normal dog. His only notable personality change was that he wanted to be right next to me wherever I went. It was an adorable improvement that I fully enjoyed and I spoiled him rotten with attention for the rest of his life. I also installed Dachshund sized doggie doors, ramps, and bed rails throughout my home for his safety.

When we finally lost our elderly Max a few years later, I reached out to BDRA and offered to become a foster for another blind short haired (allergies) Dachshund should they ever need one. Little did I know that I would immediately get a brand new tiny little puppy named Sybil. I suspected that this task would be harder, as Sybil had no previous sighted memories to draw on. Again, I was surprised at how easy it was, and what a totally happy, loving and friendly little puppy she was. She did not know that she was blind, and was in a very real sense, a completely normal puppy. Potty training was effortless on my part. She followed my sighted dog Tyson everywhere, inside and outside of the house, and quickly figured out where she was supposed to p*e and p**p.

When I finally lost my elderly Tyson a few years ago, Sybil quickly assumed his role as home defender, and became even more attached to me, as blind dogs typically do. She is the centerpiece of my whole extended family. She is loved by literally everyone, and I cannot possibly imagine life without her. I thought that I was helping a little blind helpless puppy, but I actually gave myself the best gift ever, and it was easy.

Thanks BDRA."

Pictured below are Tyson (left) and Sybil.
