The black footed cat is one of the smallest species of wild cat in the world, averaging about 3 pounds. In the wild, these beautiful felines live in scrublands in southern Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. They feed on mostly small mammals, birds and reptiles and they’ll eat around 15 percent of their body weight each night! You can see these nimble predators in the nocturnal section of the Hall of Animals.

We’ve got some purrfectly wonderful news! We recently debuted a third species of small wild cat at the Zoo – the African sand cat! Our three brothers, Mali, Chad, and Atlas have been on exhibit since late June, exploring and getting to know their new home. The brothers have short bursts of activity and then, like domestic cats, settle down for a long nap! If you visit around 10am, you’ll often have a chance to watch them exploring their habitat, sniffing and investigating everything before settling down in the sand at the front of the exhibit or, on occasion, at the top of the rocks.

In the wild, sand cats are found in North Africa. They’re the only species of cat in the world that primarily lives in deserts!

When you think about pigeons in New York City, the Victoria crowned pigeon at the Central Park Zoo probably doesn’t come to mind. As the largest species of pigeon in the world, it’s considerably bigger than the pigeons found locally. This stunning bird is the closest remaining relative of the now extinct dodo.
