We're learning more about our sweet Sara's temperament everyday. We are working on sitting to ask for everything.
Want the gate open? Your food? Your toy? Sit. This is a 180 from her previous jumping habits and it will take time, but Sara is learning quickly. ❤️ this girl.

- She has a dominant streak and clashes with our dominant female, but she gets along just fine with our submissive female.
- She has low drive, but is high energy and loves to run 💕
- She is super smart and catches on fast.

Meet Von Zahrbock's new foster dog we picked up last night. We were told she was a year old, but she appears to be closer to 8-9 months old. We will be training her, then finding a permanent home for her in a few months.

Merry Christmas from Von Zahrbock! I tried to get some Christmas pictures, but the cat was the most cooperative.

Kind of ironic that the most of GSDs in here that are portrayed as Police dogs and Protection dogs are probably from imported parents or grandparents. AKC show lines can't do most of this stuff.
I know I'm not supposed to point out stuff like that, but I couldn't resist.

Wasi is just gorgeous! Isabelle and him are going to have some pretty puppies.

Out of the two litters Wasi sired before he was imported, five puppies went on to compete in IPO, two joined the Danish Military home guard, one was a police dog and three are unknown what they became.

Because Isabelle is low drive, we shouldn't get any IPO level dogs (unless we get a lucky) but we should get dogs that can compete in Obedience, Agility, Therapy work, Scentwork and just about anything you can think of!

So true for Isabelle!! If I don't pay immediate attention, she pulls out her "drama queen" act.

Isabelle did her first essential oil scent find this morning! She did amazing!! Previously she'd been searching for very small, but stinky little treats. I'm so proud of my precious girl!!

I hide the scent article I want her to find some where inside a 15 x 15 room, then I bring her inside, give her the scent and tell her to "find it" She got to combine her alert from a container search to to searching around a room before alerting me to it's location.

It was interesting because she wanted to eat the scent article after she found it because she always gets to eat the treats when she finds them.

To clarify about our puppy policies, getting a place on our waiting list does not guarantee a puppy from our litter. It simply tells us that you are interested.

When the litter is born, I will be watching and learning about each ones temperament, like which one is the laid back easily trainable one and which one is the drivey working prospect. They will be temperament tested at 7 weeks, although I should have a good idea as to their temperaments before then.

I will try to match each person to the right puppy for them, depending on their expectations and goals for the puppy. That is not to say you do not get to add input. If their are several puppies that could work for you, they are picked by order of deposits after the puppies are a few weeks old.

If you contact us about a puppy, please let us know what you expect and want out of a puppy (besides good looks, all of our puppies will have those 😉)

We are starting a waiting list for this litter. Currently only taking names. After the litter is born (in about 4-6 months), we will take deposits. Currently have several people interested, but will continue to accept names as I have no idea how big this litter will be.

Von Zahrbock kennels is planning a fall/winter litter of high quality working line GSDs. There will be Black and tans, Sables and maybe some solid blacks in this litter. These will be working/active pets suitable for most disciplines.

The dam is a gorgeous black and tan out of West German and American show lines with low drive who is trained in scent detection and obedience.

The sire is a imported sable out of Czech and West German working lines with a BH title and a 'V' show rating. His sire competed in the Czech national IPO Championship and had the renowned Zvv3 title.

The importance in selecting the right time of day, location, ect.

In the first picture, Isabelle's coloring is lit up by the setting sun, yet she is still in the shade. I have someone distracting her and making her look sharp and alert

In the second picture, Isabelle looks washed out and is in direct, mid day sun that is very unflattering. No decoy in this picture, so she has a "lazy stack" instead of a alert one.

The other pictures are ones of all the stuff we have here on the farm. We raise our own grassfed beef and lamb and feed the organ meats to Isabelle as a nutrition dense source of protein.

This post has a LOT of good things to say that I agree with. Please read it and there is lots other good posts on that page.

Okay, so this is a word that gets an awful lot of play in the training world, and it’s definition has come to mean an awful lot of things. Many of which, are incredibly counter-productive, if not downright dangerous.

So let’s see if we can’t clarify a few things.

Socialization isn’t:
-About letting your dog freely interact with dogs at the dog park, day care, or with friends dogs.
-About allowing your dog to meet other dogs on-leash.
-About allowing all manner of people, in all manner of mental/emotional states interact/pet/pressure your dog.
-About exposing your dog to the sights and sounds of cars, buses, motorcycles, bikes, skateboards, joggers...and allowing them to freak out, panic, aggress, hide, bark etc.
-About exposing your dog to the sights and sounds of dogs, cats, and other animals, and allowing them to freak out, aggress, lunge, bark, growl etc.

Socialization is:
-About teaching your dog the proper responses to dogs. What is and isn’t appropriate behavior, and correcting the unwanted when it appears.
-About teaching your dog to walk by the barking, lunging dog(s) on walks and ignore them, completely. Correcting if necessary to achieve this result.
-About advocating for your dog and ensuring people aren’t allowed to pressure your dog, by touching, crouching down, attempting “kisses” etc. That means being a big boy or girl, and stopping others from engaging in unwanted, uninvited interactions.
-About exposing your dog to all manner of daily life “things” and ensuring a proper response. If aggression/arousal is present, it’s corrected, if fear/arousal is present (and causes an overreaction/fleeing etc.) it’s corrected. Ask your dog to learn to ignore and not care about these “life” distractions/concerns/temptations. Teach them to listen to the training, not the world around them.
-About teaching your dog to leave other creatures alone. The cat, the bird, the cow, the goat, the other dog, is simply none of their business. If they decide those things are their business, it’s your job to correct and clarify what is and isn’t their business for them.

Socialization has become a ridiculously simplified, dumbed down, all-encompassing idea. Free interaction and exposure have been presented as a panacea, the magic gateway to a balanced dog. That’s a whole lot of B.S. you’ve been sold, by a lot of people full of B.S. 🙂

Socialization is all about teaching your dog how to behave and exist in the world...properly. People have a belief that only interactions create a well socialized dog. They don’t understand that existence is almost always preferable, and more valuable than actual interaction. Yes exposure is critical, but exposure without 100% clear guidance, and corrections for poor choices, isn’t socialization, it’s chaos, and it’s not teaching your dog what’s right, what’s wrong, and that you’ll keep them safe, so they don’t have to.

A well socialized dog isn’t fazed by the world around them. And that doesn’t come from simple exposure and interactions without guidance. Ironically, that’s precisely how you create anti-social dogs.

Think on that for a minute.

Way to go with your first litter, Melissa!

Another post on what Von Zahrbock Kennels believes!

We believe in using natural remedies instead of conventional medicine with our dogs. For example, I have not used "normal" wormer for over a year on Isabelle.

I use garlic and dietomaceous earth as wormers. I also give kefir and apple cider vinegar as supplements to support healthy gut function so that her body is equipped to handle any diseases.

Is garlic bad for your dog? Here, we separate the truths from the fallacies. Find out the benefits to giving your dog garlic plus preparation, and dosage.

At lot of times you hear that you should socialize your puppy extensively. Here is a different perspective than you normally hear.

Von Zahrbock definitely believes that the German Shepherds need different methods then your usual dog. After all, they are working dogs.

Read the article, then give your opinion below in the comments.

She stood atop of the massive metal bleachers, her puppy triumphantly standing on one of the rows, as she called down to me. “Aren’t you going to socialize your puppy?” she asked. “I’m good.” I said with a smile. “I’m going to work on engagement down here.” She looked perplexed. As...
