WHY WOLVES?

Wolves are essential for resilient, healthy ecosystems.

As top-level predators, they are influential in shaping and maintaining the structure of their natural communities. By regulating prey populations, wolves induce vegetative changes allowing for the return of beaver, migrating birds, and other species previously driven out of denuded habitats. In this regard, wolves have a trickle-down effect on other populations, a phenomenon known as a “trophic cascade".

Predation by wolves also removes animals that are weaker genetically or harbor sicknesses. As selective predators, wolves provide a protective gauntlet that can help slow the spread and prevalence of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) - the ultra-lethal degenerative neurological illness now invading wildlife-rich ecosystems across the American landscape.

We have gotten many messages wondering how the coyote that Newhouse Wildlife Rescue sent us was doing. For those of you following her story you know she came in suffering from mange, rodenticide poisoning and was severely emaciated. To be honest, if she had not been rescued when she was, it’s unlikely she would have lasted much longer. She is not out of the woods yet, but her blood is clotting normally, she is gaining weight and her hair is growing back in. We have moved her into an indoor heated enclosure with another younger coyote who is also recovering from mange, and the two have become inseparable. A huge thank you to all that were involved in this rescue, it’s another great example of what can be accomplished when we all work together!

Your unleashed dog might be attracted to smells emanating from a bear's den—that means trouble for you, your dog and the bear.

The only time bears are truly at peace in Vermont is when they're denning, so please don't disturb them! For most of the year (June 1st through the end of November), black bears are terrorized by hunting hounds. They're also hunted and killed during the long hunting season. Many bears enter their dens wounded by hunters, cars and other threats. Give them this time to rest and heal.

Wolves have returned to California after nearly 150 years. They bring an unexpected problem

From The Guardian: A sinewy skull, two hooves and a shriveled hide are all that’s left of the 650-pound cow. “Wolf kill,” said William McDarment, a rancher on the Tule River Reservation in Tulare county, California. “Picked clean in less than a week. … See those tracks.” Click here for t...

We humans have a strange urge to create monsters. For many, it’s not enough to believe in predators that hunt prey. We have to also project strange, sinister, and even supernatural forces onto the creatures who share our planet. Since the beginning of time, we’ve created and exaggerated stories of dragons that abduct maidens, giant eagles that grab children, the Big Bad Wolf who pretends to be a sheep or a grandmother.
The most modern version of these myths involves none other than the coyote: a 25-pound omnivore often seen in the suburbs, where it eats a diet containing mostly rodents.
You’ve likely heard about how coyotes are vicious beasts who come up with complex, cunning plans to befriend innocent dogs. When the dog thinks it has made a friend— as the legend says— the coyote will lead it back to a den, where a large pack of vicious coyotes leap upon the dog and eat it.
No matter how many times you’ve heard a version of this story, it’s not true. Coyotes do not live or hunt in large packs. A coyote family usually includes just one pair of adults and their young of the year. While the family does occasionally work together to hunt, they usually prefer to hunt alone, and they never hunt in the large groups of 10, 20, or 30 animals that many claim to have witnessed.
While coyotes are extremely intelligent animals, their minds don’t work like human minds. They don’t develop complex plans for the future, and they don’t have a theory of mind— the ability to conceptualize and predict another animal’s thoughts and perceptions— in the same way that humans do. A coyote simply isn’t capable of “lying” to a dog by pretending to be its friend or developing a plan to lead it into a trap.
Like many other myths, the story about the coyote luring a dog to its death probably started as a misunderstanding. Coyotes and domestic dogs are very close relatives, so coyotes have been known to sometimes approach them socially. That can include the kind of bowing and tail-wagging that we all know means, “Be my friend!” in dog language.
When a family of coyotes is heard singing and yipping later, the same people who witnessed the coyotes approaching dogs might mistake them for a pack ready to hunt. Coyotes use rapidly rising and falling notes fo create an auditory illusion, which makes a pair or trio of coyotes sound like a large pack, so it’s easy to be intimidated by the sound. But just because coyotes are singing doesn’t mean they’re killing a dog or making sinister plans: it just means they’re a family and they’re together.
With all that said, coyotes are opportunists, and like any other predator, they will eat whatever prey is available if they’re hungry enough. A small dog, especially a toy breed, may be hunted by a coyote. This is one of many reasons that small dogs should not be left outside unattended, particularly at dawn and dusk. Although coyotes aren’t known to target larger dogs as prey, they will fight with a dog if provoked, and both the dog and coyote can be injured or killed. Responsible pet owners should always take steps to prevent these incidents.
Lying, deception, and complicated, evil plans are human traits, not coyote traits. There’s no need to project the flaws of our own species onto our wild neighbors or to assume the worst of a coyote’s friendly or confused behavior. We need to understand and coexist with our wildlife, not to fear them.

Rest in Peace Airplane Ears, (2323M). You were a model Red Wolf, a tireless provider for your family and a good father to two litters of pups, 11 out of 12 of which survived you. But like the one pup that did not survive, you fell victim to the highway trap. While seeking food that you could bring back to share with the pack, you were blindsided by a vehicle that was likely traveling too fast to avoid you. It wasn’t your fault. You were doing the best you could with the cards that were dealt to you. I hope the Milltail pack can remember the example that you set, while also learning from your fatal mistake. I hope we can learn something from this as well, and think about how we can make that small part of the world safer for your pack so that this does not continue to happen. Perhaps some strategically placed fencing would be a good place to start. I would urge everyone to try to give the Milltail pack space. Pam (2225F) will now be a single mother to six rambunctious and hungry pups. She doesn’t have the time to get chased by over eager fans. She has to figure out how to adjust to a life without her mate. In the Red Wolf Recovery Area in Eastern NC

Elder's Meditation of the Day September 21

"everything is laid out for you. Your path is straight ahead of you. Sometimes it's invisible but it's there. You may not know where it's going, but still you have to follow that path. It's the path to the Creator. That's the only path there is."
--Leon Shenandoah, ONONDAGA

Everything on the earth has a purpose and a reason for its existence. Every human being is a warrior and every warrior has a song written in his/her heart and that song must be sung or the soul forever remains restless. This song is always about serving the Great Spirit and helping the people. This song is always sung for the people. Many times I need to learn much about the difficulties of life. I need to know this, so I must experience it. Then I can be of use to the people. Because I am experiencing difficulty does not mean I have left the path or that I have done something wrong. It means I'm doing the will of the Great Spirit during these times of testing. I need to pray constantly to keep a good attitude.

Great Spirit, this I know - You will never leave me, only my doubting makes it seem like You do. This I know - Your love is always dependable, only my doubting makes it seem like You do. Today remove the doubts from my belief system and allow me to stand straight and see You with straight eyes.

Don’t let the name fool you. Although the Trillion Trees Act sounds like a forest-friendly and climate-friendly bill, the pro-logging legislation would cause widespread damage to public forests, our climate, and critical wildlife habitat.

That’s why Guardians—alongside ninety other environmental organizations—have dubbed this bill the Trillion Stumps Act.

Please stand up for public forests and write your members of Congress today: https://guardiansaction.org/TrillionStumpsAct

Kudos earthjustice!!!! WHY MONTANA?????? You will have innocent blood on your conscience FOREVER😔

BREAKING - Earthjustice sent a notice of intent to sue the state of Montana today for implementing new laws allowing snaring of wolves and expanding trapping seasons to reduce the wolf population.

These new laws increase the likelihood that grizzly bears and Canada lynx, both federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, may be injured or killed by snares and other traps set for wolves. More ➡ https://bit.ly/2T0k9LN via Western Watersheds Project

Montana has 60 days to respond to the notice.
