Sage first came to Diane Boyd's cabin in Glacier National Park in November 1983. After four years of studying the phantom wolves in the Flathead River region, Diane heard the howl and opened her door to find Sage on the opposite river bank.
During those years, Diane tracked the Magic Pack, named such because of their ability to evade detection. The pack continued to stay away from the research team until Sage became curious and appeared at the cabin.
Over the next month, Sage would visit Diane and her dogs. Sage seemed curious about the dogs, even attempting to interact at one point. Months later, Dick Thiel set traps to capture and collar wolves. Another team member, Mike, radioed in about a two-year-old male wolf, Sage.
Over the years, the team was able to track Sage's collar. One year, Diane and the team found a trap with evidence of Sage having been caught and subsequently escaped the trap.
Following the tracks of a struggling wolf, Diane and the team found Sage alive. They began to pull out the medical equipment to care for the wolf, eventually waiting for Sage to awaken and walk away. Finally, around 4:00 a.m., Diane poked Sage, who jumped up, looked around, and limped off.
Using the tools available, Sage became part of Diane's story as much as Diane became part of Sage's journey.
