Pets are cherished company, yes, but their wellbeing function is so much more than that. We hear repeatedly from this population that their pets are a reason to get up in the morning – that they motivate healthy routine and are essential to mental health.

Thanks to a Positive Ageing Fellowship Grant from Office for Ageing Well, Paws with Friends was piloted in 2023/24 as a program supporting older people and their pets. Following the success of its first year we have expanded to service people living with disability and chronic illness.

With a range of volunteer-led outreach services, Paws with Friends aims to preserve the many mutual benefits of the human-animal bond. This vital program supports palliative clients to live at home with their companion animal, gives peace of mind around hospital admissions, and brings a sense of community to those experiencing social isolation.

We want people to feel secure in their bond with their companion animal, and reassured there will be support at times of need.
