Every day, I'm asked to help dogs that might have a drop of Collie in them, and when asked to help a purebred Collie – there's no guarantee there's a spot for that dog to go either. I have struggled the last few years to find places at times, even with our awesome regional rescue friends we've worked with for 20+ years. We are ALL up to our eyeballs in dogs. Every rescue in Oklahoma is overwhelmed. Rescues are begging pet owners to contact a spay/neuter clinic in your area to help get this problem under control, no matter what breed you have. Please help OK rescues, because we can't help anyone, when we are all full and adoptions are slow. 😢

UPDATE! He's been adopted! YAY!
Oklahoma followers! There's a handsome male Collie/Aussie mix at the OKC Animal Shelter. I'm out of state, so I can't pull this kid - but so many of you contact us asking if we're aware of any Collie kids available for adoption - and this kid is right now. He's 53 lbs, a lovely Blue Merle coat. If you can adopt, please contact OKC Animal Welfare.

Stay safe 💕🐾💕

As the temperature outside starts increasing, we want to remind everyone of the dangers of leaving pets and children inside vehicles.
The temperature inside a vehicle can become deadly within a matter of minutes.
Studies have shown that having windows cracked makes very little difference to the inside temp of a vehicle. When going out, please be mindful if you plan to bring your four-legged companion with you.
Do not leave children, pets or vulnerable adults inside vehicles unattended, even if it's "just for a minute".

Please spread the word! Bitsie was LOST on April 16, 2024 in Oklahoma City, OK 73120 near Brush Creek Road, north Quail Creek

"We are still searching for Bitsie. Thank you to all the kind people who have helped look for her, helped to get the word out and given us moral support. We have appreciated your suggestions and the kind comments. Though we are devastated and ache that she is not with us, we have been gratified by all the wonderful dog and Sheltie lovers we have met. We are forever grateful for your kindness and efforts."

A few months ago, we posted two photos of an injury to one of our long-term special needs foster care dog's gum, as the result of a piece of a Nylabone breaking and lodging between two teeth. This post was for educational purposes, so everyone can be aware these "bones" - which are advertised to break off into small pieces and were safe, aren't all that safe. That post was reported to Facebook as "graphic violence" which it is not, and that report jeopardizes our status on Facebook. To the person who reported this, you are interfering in sharing safety and protection for dogs, which we have been committed to for over 55 years. Consumers need to be aware what happened to Barney, could happen to their dog too if they use Nylabone products.

As deadly cold weather moves in, please bring your pets inside. These temps are not survivable & blankets or towels collect the cold and transfer it to their body, reducing body heat.
Please protect your pets, in memory of Gayla, who was left outside during an ice storm with no protection while her owner was inside his warm house. Get creative to block off a kitchen or laundry area, and remember carpets and floors can be cleaned.

UPDATE 12/27: Not one business, federal or state agency that oversee the dam, campgrounds, roads, marinas, etc. has had any inquiries if anyone reported a lost dog. Flyers were put up last week next to the dam, campgrounds, marina store, etc. It appears no one is looking for this kid. No one has contacted our founder through reports to shelters in 3 counties, umpteen social media pages ad, public marketplace ads, every lost and found ad possible through pet sites etc., since this kid was found 10 days ago. :(

Not a Collie or Sheltie, but scruffy, cute and in our program anyway, safe and sound. This kid was found in a remote area just outside of shelter limits so they can't take. The area in Idaho, where our founder is now, is known for dumped dogs 😢 Cross your fingers the family is looking for this kid as much as we are looking for them.

In case you haven't heard about the mystery upper respiratory virus going around that's impacting dogs (and can be fatal), here's current information as of 2 days ago. This virus is like kennel cough but it's worse. Our rescue experienced something similar about 13 years ago. We pulled a dog from a shelter. He was asymptomatic, but brought in what was a deadly and unidentified URI strain. He and two other dogs in our rescue died as a result.
This new virus can be aggressive and fatal, so please use caution with your dogs around other dogs. Here are some helpful hints in this informative video.

Use Nylabones, they said… They are safe, they said… I just happened to be at the right angle on the ground in front of Barney and noticed it looked like a piece of green metal was in the back of his mouth. It was a piece of Nylabone that had been lodged between his teeth for some time. We had no idea. He did not have foul breath–but he did as soon as we dislodged the piece. He didn't complain, never rubbed his face, was still chewing on Nylabones and eating normally. Everything seemed just fine. He's on dental rinse, antibiotics and the vet found more pieces in that cavity. Barney was such a good boy during the entire ordeal. I can't imagine how much that must've hurt and yet there was no indication anything was wrong. Needless to say, all of the have been thrown out.

We remember so many over the decades. While rescue is difficult, we've had the chance to love many rescued dogs (a cat & birds too) who found themselves without love. Our hearts are with all who have beloved pets at the Rainbow Bridge.

Forever in our minds and hearts, take some time to remember those that are waiting for you over the Rainbow Bridge today. 🌈💜

Need an excuse to eat a piece of cake? Well, we have one for you! It's our birthday! Oklahoma Collie/Sheltie Rescue began in August 1999 and we're still doing all we can to keep our beloved Collies and Shelties safe, through the help of volunteers and our awesome rescue friends around the region. Thank you all so much for your support over the decades, especially with our operational change due to an out of state job transfer. Rescues can't succeed without the help of wonderful volunteers! ❤️ 🐾🎂🎈🎁🐾 ❤️

Important public service announcement!

Important public service announcement!

Sweet little Millie decided to explore the neighborhood today! Thank goodness for the kind citizen that saw here walking around in this insane heat and picked her up. She was taken to a nearby vet's office who saw her HCR tag. The vet's office called us and we were able to identify her owner. Well, Millie's owner freaked when we told her Millie was waiting to be picked up! We're so happy Millie is back home!
Millie's story is the one we hear the most. The lawn people left the gate open. ALWAYS check the gate when you know the lawn people have come. This is just a friendly reminder to make sure your pup always has their collar and tags on. Also, if you haven't already, update their microchip with your phone/address. AND, think about getting them another cutesy tag with your phone/address. That way, the finder doesn't need to take to vet to read the microchip.
Millie had her little adventure and is happy to be back home in the A/C with her family! We love you, Millie!

We had to say goodbye to Hannah this weekend. 10 years ago this summer, I found her in my neighborhood, skin and bones. Tried to find her family for weeks through shelters, ads, social media. Turned out she had EPI, a pancreatic enzyme disorder that prevents digesting food without prescription medication. No one wanted to adopt her because the treatment is expensive - so Hannah eventually became our girl. She was an "honorary" collie (she was a Rat Terrier), loved all dogs and every person she met. Hannah passed away from kidney failure after a hard fought battle the past month. She was such a precious girl, and we miss her so much.

In addition to this common sense, folks who run and take your dogs with you: You hydrate before you leave, and stretch, and you gradually work yourself up to running 1, 2, 3 or 5 miles+. When you take your dog without the same preventative measures, you're putting them under tremendous strain, subjecting them to injuries, dehydration and when it's hot outside, burned paw pads.
We've seen too many dogs about to drop while out with their owners on a walk or run, and dogs that have died in clinics we've worked in over the years, from preventable heat stokes. Please exercise safely.

"If it's hot outside for you, it's most likely even hotter for your pet," one expert tells NPR. Here's how to protect your pet outdoors, keep them engaged inside and respond to signs of heat stroke.

Great idea - and don't forget, you can go to your local Petsmart and print an ID tag on the spot! This is so important, especially with 4th of July upon us. More dogs bolt away from their homes this time of year than any other. 😢

TAG! You’re it! Now tag somebody else on this post to tell them we give out FREE pet ID tags!

Please email [email protected] with the information to be printed and the choice of tag shape and color. And just look at all the options! ❤️🧡💚💙💜🖤 *Subject to availability.

We’ll let you know when the pet ID tag is ready. Come to the shelter, 2811 SE 29th St. Call the number on the front door, and we will meet you out front with your new tag!

We hope you never lose your pet, but it’s best to take precautions!
