This is our other tiny Yorkie baby boy that came to us nearly 4 years ago. He was 10 in November.
When I picked him up, his eyes were crusted shut with puss from untreated dry eye. His lower jaw had rotted off from infection, he weighed 1.9 lbs. He was 7 years old.
We knew immediately that he would begin to heal the huge hole in our hearts that was created when Lammy died.
He requires daily treatment with an expensive medication for his eyes, he is spoiled rotten and will only eat BBQ chicken/Costco steak with either goat cheese or shredded cheese, which we must chop into tiny pieces for him, and must have his scoop of ice cream every night.
He sleeps nestled next to my chest every night and in his baggie in my lap when I sit down.
Recently, he has begun to exhibit stress when I am gone so he is now a permanent riding buddy.
On top of all of the other things we do, the other dogs we have, there are special ones that demand, and deserve, every spare minute we can give them.
My Little Man.

I'm modifying my trip due to the extreme weather conditions forecast starting at midnight on the plains Friday night.
I will head for Liberal, KS tomorrow, spend the night, head for AR at 5 am Thursday, meet the breeders at 2, head back to Coffeyville, KS, spend the night, and head home at 6 am, arriving ahead of the storm.
About 1700 miles.

We are approaching the date of Lammy's death which is always a very difficult day for us.
Every year, I post his story so you know how we became aware of the plight of breeding dogs and the resulting rescue of over 7000 of these precious dogs. He died nestled next to my heart, as many of these dogs do that we simply can't save as we get them too late or just can't be saved.
We loved you so and you taught us so much about love, perserverance, and unfortunately, the cruelty that can exist for these dogs.
Lammy aka Lil Bits
In July of 2007, Chris told me he had seen an interview with a lady who was rescuing dogs from puppy mills in the mid-west. I called the station and got her information and contacted her. I offered to take any Yorkies she rescued on behalf of YTNR since I was now the Director for Arizona and Colorado. She agreed to contact me when they went on another rescue if they had Yorkies. She called me about a month later to say they had just rescued 65 dogs from an Amish puppy mill in Iowa and she had 11 Yorkies and Silkies. I called the few foster homes we had in CO at the time and we all agreed to go right to her house and take as many as we could. When we pulled up to Theresa Straders house, she greeted us and took us immediately to a very tall x pen set up in the grass and a very tiny Yorkie laying in the grass. He was so weak that he couldn’t stand. His eyes were full of puss, he was blind, had no hair on his nose or ears from rubbing against the wires of his cage to sooth himself and his lower jaw had rotted off from infection. He weighed less than 2 pounds. I fell to my knees and gathered him up and thus began the journey to rescue as many of these dogs as we could for as long as we could. She told me that the Amish man bragged that he had sired over 300 puppies, was 10 years old and had always lived hanging from a cage in the dark Amish barn.
Between all of the fosters and ourselves, we took 9 Yorkies that day, all in terrible shape. We felt as though we had been hit in the head with a hammer. There were many people there that day that would have taken this little guy and she told me later that they had decided to give him to whoever didn’t put him down. Of course, I didn’t and he came home with us. He was so weak that we weren’t sure we could make it home with him from Colorado Springs. Because he had no lower jaw, it was nearly impossible for him to feed himself. I watched him spend an hour with one small nugget of food trying to toss it to the back of his tiny throat so he could swallow it with tears pouring out of my eyes. It took us 2 weeks of trying various things but we finally figured out that he could pull soft food off of a butter knife with what was left of his upper jaw and swallow it. He immediately began to turn around. I carried him in a little pouch most of the time and he learned to love the warmth of the sun on his back and the warm wood stove in the winter. He was totally blind but knew the sound of my step and follow me everywhere. He knew the sound of me sitting down and immediately came to be picked up. He was too frail to neuter and he only had one testicle. We loved him so and we had him exactly 3 years and 5 months before his little body succumbed and he died very quietly nestled on my chest. We had picked him up exactly 3 years to the day that we lost our precious Puppy. We will always miss you little man and because of you, many of the little ones who were still in cages have been saved and got to know the love we shared.

Our Journey

We began our journey to rescue dogs in 2004 by fostering Yorkies when we knew we were going to lose our precious Yorkie to a collapsed trachea.

We discovered the plight of breeding dogs who were no longer useful in 2007 and in 2010 started our own organization to rescue these dogs as well as some from euthanasia lists in shelters. We concentrate on small breed dogs and with the help of a small team of volunteers in 3 states, we rescue between 350 and 400 of these dogs every year.

These dogs are not the easiest to get adopted. Most are not socialized, have never seen a vet, are terrified of people and traumatized. We take care of their vet care and begin the socialization process. We do not attempt to house train as the adopters expectations will be different than ours. We just show them what it is like to be in a home with people, have lots of yummy food and kind words and pets. For many, it is the first time their feet have ever been off wire and on the ground.

For the brave folks who adopt our dogs, the rewards of watching them “learn to be dogs” is beyond belief. It can take a week or a year but eventually, with time, love, patience and most of all commitment, these dogs will become wonderful companions.
