Barnyard Introductions before bedtime on this Friday night----
This is American Magnolia, aka Maggie.
She is a registered appaloosa horse and what give our pasture that perfect pop of color!
Maggie came to us from Oklahoma. We learned that she lived a great deal of her life in a salvage (junk) yard and was occasionally pulled out to compete in pony express type relay races. A fellow appy lover rescued her from that lifestyle, poured some love into her and shared her on Facebook. We just knew she was the one. Purchased, sight unseen, paid for through paypal and transported, she became part of the Galla'HERD and she's never had to worry about having enough hay to fill her belly since!

Fridays won't be complete until you've been properly introduced to everyone, and we've got a few more to go!

This is Anne (Anne with an E).
Our Anne was named after the character Anne Shirley Cuthbert because, like the character, she also has a lot to say!
Anne is a myotonic goat (aka: a fainting goat).
These goats are characterised by myotonia congenita, a hereditary condition that may cause it to stiffen or fall over when excited or startled.
They are also known as the fainting goat, falling goat, stiff-legged goat or nervous goat, or as the Tennessee wooden-leg goat.

Roamie O. Possum the barn cat is up for this week's barnyard introduction! "Roams" believes he should have been the first one because he is a cat and we all know the importance they asign to themselves, but here we are!
He was brought on as a mouser, which actually is a very important role in any barn, but his most vital duty is making sure everyone knows he is ready to be fed (even when his bowl is full of kibble). He is a good walking buddy for perimeter checks. He loves Doritos, and secretly he loves to snuggle up to our dogs!

It's Friday and we're here with another BarnYard Introduction, and another long-term resident.

Meet Chigger the Mule.
Her favorite activities are loudly reminding everyone of feeding times, alerting us of visitors and conning people into scratching her backside!

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey (a jack) and a female horse (a mare). A horse has 64 chromosomes, and a donkey has 62. The mule ends up with 63. Mules can be either male or female, but, because of the odd number of chromosomes, they are rarely able to reproduce.

Many have asked if we still host doggie staycations.
The short answer is yes, however at this point much of our calendar fills with "regulars" so we rarely post about openings.

🐾All guests must be child, dog, cat and farm animal friendly.
🐾They MUST be FULLY house-trained. This is a staycation, in our HOME. Its a unique alternative to traditional boarding and allows your dog to have much more personalized attention
🐾We do have one outside kennel space available for dogs who prefer a more "primitive" stay. The area is covered and has great views of nature.
🐾UTD on immunizations and spayed/neutered
🐾Crate/Kennel trained is preferred. They roam with us during the day but at night it is best if they can sleep in a kennel to keep down the mischief.
🐾 Daily rates apply

This is also a great time to remind everyone that we do not accept bookings during the week of Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Years and 4th of July.
Here's why:
🦃🎄Thanksgiving and Christmas are family holidays and we whole heartedly want to believe that YOUR dog is part of YOUR family. Additionally, it is a time of year when our home is a little more chaotic and extra guests are here which could create unnecessary stress for a dog who was unfamiliar with it all.
🇺🇲4th of July week, with all of its glory, is a time when many dogs are vulnerable. They need to be in their safe place, with their people and in familiar surroundings to keep them best protected.
⏰️We also don't do last minute bookings. Plan ahead, because we have to plan ahead for your pets stay.

We know there are many places that do offer traditional boarding during this time. Its just not going to be us.
Let us know if you have any questions.

We told you there was a whole lot more than puppy dogs running around here!
Meet Bunny Black, one of our longest running barnyard residents to date. She is 8 years old and next week will mark her 8 year anniversary of moving in!
Black is a Polish Rabbit. Polish rabbits are small in size, big in personality and easy to train. This, combined with the fact that they do not require a great deal if space, makes them excellent pets!

A season of change is upon us, and what better time than FALL to make an announcement about it.
Stay tuned....

Somedays in our world, it is difficult to make sense of anything.
In southern states, it's not uncommon to see dogs roaming. Some have a home, and some have never known one.
What seems to be a constant, too, are the bleeding hearts. I get it. Both dogs I live with are here (still here) because they were left to roam, and in that, they crossed our paths.
What I don't get is the people who post pleading for "somebody" to help. They stop, they take pictures to post, and they drive away. Truly, they aren't calling for just "somebody" to help-- they are meaning somebody else.
Rescues are always going to be overwhelmed with this type of person around. Animals will remain neglected.
It's time for you to do more than just post. Posting is a start, but it's time for YOU to be the SOMEBODY that you are calling out for. ...somebody to help.

✨️Be SOMEBODY that calls on our government to make changes that protect the innocent.
✨️Be SOMEBODY who feeds that hungry dog.
✨️Be SOMEBODY who sponsors a vet visit.
✨️Be SOMEBODY who checks on the needs of a local rescue group.
✨️Be SOMEBODY who loads up that stray in your car (and keep it longer than a couple of hours).
✨️Be the SOMEBODY that makes a difference.

Actions always speak louder than words.

UPDATE-ADOPTED ☺ Izzie (hospice) Sweet Izzie. Here after her owner passed away. She lived with other dogs. We dont know much else but she appears house trained and well mannered. She sadly had several mammary tumors that we removed when we spayed her. This is likely cancer and is seeking a hospice adopter. Her chest xrays looked clear now so we hope that means that she will have great quality time with share with her new special family. For more information or to make an appointment to meet her call 757-385-4444 or message the shelter directly at Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center.

To think that she might have never survived those early puppy days, that someone cared not. It breaks my heart.
To see that she can now enjoy not only a couch, but also a pillow, a warm home on a cold day and a family with whom she loves to play.
To see how much she's grown--- that's the stuff that will fill your cup.

The most noble thing to do is love and stand by them for as long as you can. It is such an honor.

The most noble thing to do is love and stand by them for as long as you can. It is such an honor.

"They tell you not to cry.
They tell you he's just a dog, not a human.
They tell you it will pass.
They tell you that animals do not know that they must die.
They tell you that the important thing is not to make them suffer.
They tell you that you can get another one.
They tell you it will happen.
They tell you there are more unbearable pains.
But they don't know how many times you've looked your dog in the eye.
They don't know how many times it was you and your dog that looked in the dark.
They don't know how many times your dog was the only one by your side.
They don't know that the only one who hasn't judged you is your dog.
They don't know how scared you were the night his moans woke you up.
They don't know how many times your dog has slept next to you.
They don't know how much you've changed since the dog became a part of your life.
They don't know how many times you hugged him when he was sick.
They don't know how many times you pretended not to see when his hair was getting whiter and whiter.
They don't know how many times you've talked to your dog, the only one who really listens to you.
They don't know how good you were to your dog.
Little do they know that only your dog knew you were in pain.
They don't know what it's like to see your old dog trying to come over and say hello.
They don't know that when things go wrong, the only one who isn't gone is your dog.
They don't know that your dog trusts you, every moment of his life, even at the last moment.
They don't know how much your dog loved you and how little he needed to be happy, because you were enough for him.
They don't know that crying for a dog is one of the noblest, most meaningful, truest and purest things you can do.
They don't know about the last time you rocked him hard ... being careful not to hurt him.
They don't know what you felt when you caressed his face in the last moments of his life"

I said what I said.

I know it is so hard for them not to get jaded with everything that gets seen. I've been there. I've seen it. BUT, I also know that there are lots of responsible pet owners, even in the south.
It is so discouraging to get someone excited about the possibility of adopting, and giving a dog a second chance, only to have them shot down because they missed their former dog's veterinary check up one year (things happen), or because they take a more holistic approach to pet care or because they may leave home for more than 8 hours a day to work (trust me, the dog will nap just fine during that time).
Shelters are filling up and staying full.
We have to do better-- dogs deserve a life with the opportunity to have a home and family.

It's almost as frustrating as people rehoming their "beloved" family pet.... but thats a soapbox for another night.

I always have mixed feelings when I see ads posted by shelters wanting heelers to go to rescues only, or homes without kids. I know the reason for it is that many people don't want to research breeds or have understandings of herding tendencies and end up returning the dog to the shelter. BUT, I also know what amazing family dogs they can make. I actually probably took for granted how much of a babysitter Lori was. Looking back through photos it was very apparent though. She wasn't the "cool aunt." My baby was her baby. She watched her nap, got up for late night feedings, she watched over her, played dress up, once she even tried to bite my father in law for attempting to pick up the baby when no one else was in the room to approve the motion. As years passed and Lori aged I watched the roles reverse. My baby started being the caretaker, moving at a slower pace to accommodate the speed of an older dog. She passed out tons to "baby girl" endearments to Lori, made sure we didn't run out of Lori's favorite treats and always kept a check on her. She insisted on being there when Lori went to the vet last week and did her best to comfort that family-heeler until she drew her last breath on this side.
I say all that, to say this.
If you ever have a chance to welcome a heeler into your home know that there may be challenges, but know that their companionship is worth it all. They aren't quite like any other dog you will ever meet.

Yesterday our very best girl went home.

"I wish that I could make you see
That Heaven indeed is real.
If you could see me run & play
How much better you would feel.

But our loving God has promised me
That when the time is right,
You'll step out of the darkness and
Meet me in the light."

An update on the Scallywag-
Week 1 was about getting rid of parasites.
Week 2 was about learning some manners.
That carried over into week 3 where she is also working on crate and house training. There has only been ONE "accident" so far!
Sunday officially marks 3 weeks.
Her most common nicknames have become Scally and Scals.
