Whistlepig Junction has a new friend, Spike. He is staying with us until someone decides he needs to be part of their pack. Spike is a sweet, older pug with lots of love to share with that special someone. He is deaf, but it doesn't stop him from anything--he still runs and plays with the others. Seniors need our love, too.

"A year ago today, I walked into the animal shelter to adopt a 1 year old lab puppy I'd been interested in for a couple weeks. I sat down to do the paper work and I knew something didn't feel right so I asked the ladies at the front desk if I could go back and look at the dogs one more time.

That's when I went into the small dog room (small dogs are not my thing) and saw this little gem. She was in the back of her cage, curled up in a ball, snoring loud. I read her info card and saw she was 11 years old and blind. My first thought was, who's going to walk into an animal shelter and adopt a blind, old dog? My second thought was, me, that's who. She is my best friend. Sassy at times, but I love her so much.

If you took the time to read this, please consider adopting a senior dog into your home. They deserve the same love and attention that a puppy would get but they are often over looked. Do what you can to make the last moments of their life enjoyable, like my dear Coconut who has quickly turned my bed, and home...and life into her own.

Remember, those cute puppies have mothers that never see life outside of a filthy cage. And more than likely, some of their litter mates are left behind to become breeders, living a miserable existence. ADOPT. DON'T SHOP.

The Puppy Hut was one of 26 establishments cited in January by the state Attorney General's Division of Consumer Affairs
