Number 5 in our Safety Series is how to best be prepared for an emergency! Not all vets can treat every issue on site so know where your nearest emergency clinic is in case you ever need them.

We also listed a few key things for your first aid kit - you can buy pet first aid kits or assemble them yourself - but here are a few other items to keep in mind we didn’t list above:

- Flashlight
- Gloves
- Towel, Blanket
- Marker
- Plastic bags for samples
- Razor Blades, eye dropper, syringe (needle removed)
- Kaopectate (treats upset stomach)
- Betadine (antiseptic)
- Petroleum Jelly (use for the thermometer)
- Activated Charcoal (absorbs poisons)
- Vinegar or Baking soda (neutralizes acid burns)

Next up in our safety series is a few common pet emergencies & what to do if you have one. Not all snake and insect bites will be an emergency (just venomous snakes - Copperheads in MO! - and insect bites that cause an allergic reaction).

Tip: find your nearest emergency vet and save their number in your phone. If you’re ever in need of calling on your way, like for bloat, you’ll have it handy and can ask Siri to call for you.

You’re probably familiar with chocolate as toxic for pups but did you know Tylenol is the #1 pet toxin (according to ?) Here’s a list of SOME common toxins for pets and how to be prepared if your pup injests them (because we all know they can get a little curious! 😉) This doesn’t cover it all though - there are many plants even that have toxic leaves and stems. So, the general rule of thumb we advise is, don’t give your pup anything you wouldn’t eat yourself. Or grapes. Or chocolate 🍫😮‍💨

While this does NOT constitute veterinary advice, (always consult with them first!) these can help you prevent an accident and be prepared if one happens.

#2 in our Pet Safety Series is car safety! This one is a bummer for the pups who like to ride with the wind 😞 In case of accident though, having your pups secure and ideally in a crush-resistant kennel can save their life.

(We can recreate the wind in their fur effect, too 😉 though I think every pup ever would say it’s not the same 😂)

We recently certified in Pet CPR and First Aid, and it inspired us to share all the tips we give our clients on pet safety! Up first in our series is handling the heat 🥵 Pets have a higher body temperature than us and pant to cool down, so they need access to cool airflow when it gets hot. (Also why we bathe with lukewarm water & dry mostly with no heat!)

We are so excited to join the Firehouse Hounds Pet Adoption event next Saturday at the Shrewsbury Firehouse! There will be lots of pups to meet & greet from four local shelters. At our booth we'll have pup cups, fresh cologne, and at-home nail trim appointments for purchase, proceeds of which will go back to the shelters. Bring your kids, your pups, and come enjoy some treats for the whole family!
