Amen! It is a passion!

I don’t know how many ways to say horse trainers don’t make any money… but horse trainers don’t make any money. 🤣

I think sometimes the clients do not understand this. Yes, you may write your horse trainer a check for $1200 or $1500 a month, but I assure you, once you figure out the costs, there is no money….

You have to:
➡️Feed the horse. (Hay/Grain)
➡️House the horse. (Whether you rent or you have a mortgage, there is cost here.)
➡️You have to physically feed the horse.
➡️Clean stalls
➡️Fill waters
➡️Turn out the horse and bring them in.
➡️Groom/bathe the horse.
➡️Maybe you have labor costs.
➡️You have to ride said horse.
➡️Likely you aren’t billing for all you should.

Let’s say you charge $1250 a month.
Let’s say you feed a bag a week at $20 bucks ($80)

8 bales of hay a month at $15 ($120) I feed way more than this; and to keep weight you need to. Clients don’t pay for you to buy in bulk to save money.

Clean stalls 2x day and clean or fill water everyday 15 min at $15 hr. ($225)

Shavings??? 🙃

That leaves you with $825 left over. Whether you own or rent; you need to factor that in, and if you ride every day, you have to pay yourself your time.

If you train horses you need:
➡️A facility (an average facility is usually around $2500+ a month to rent, but if you have a mortgage and run a business, you need to factor that in.)
➡️A truck ($50,000 truck is around $750 on average, most of us are driving $100,000 trucks.)
➡️A trailer. (Cheap would be $25,000)
➡️Saddles ($2,000 each)
➡️Bits ($100-$250 each)
➡️ Splint boots, girths, bridles, breastcollars, saddle pads, reins, training tack, etc.
➡️Tires, oil changes, fuel, wear and tear
All of these things wear out and need to be replaced.

I say all of this to tell you that as a trainer, we are greatly invested, sometimes YEARS, hoping that we either make money in the arena, or make money on the sale of the horse (commission.)

When your horse does poorly, I assure you, NONE OF US WANTED THAT. We are trying our best because we have endless hours invested in fluffy.

That being said, fluffy doesn’t always (let’s get real… RARELY) have/has the same plans we do.

Fluffy doesn’t know you invested $15k in training and he isn’t in the 1D.

Fluffy doesn’t know he won’t be good enough for your kid.

Fluffy likely doesn’t know he is a major pain in the a**.

Fluffy doesn’t know he is going to take 9 million man hours to make a Futurity horse.

So have some grace for your trainers. They are not paid enough to deal with your bulls*** too.

Training horses is a horrible business model. It’s based solely on what you can produce in a day and your client doesn’t want an intern training their horse. The more horses, the higher the overhead. There aren’t many trainers that are *making* money.

If you get hurt, who pays your bills?

This is not directed at anyone. Rather an industry wide thing I see ALL THE TIME!

We have made the decision to cancel and reschedule the clinic for tomorrow. I'm sorry for the inconvenience but we believe this is in the best interest of safety for the horses and riders. Keep checking back for upcoming dates. Thanks!

💕Just in! Perfect Project!
5yr old mare! Three Bars and Bugs Alive in 75 on papers! Cute and flashy!
She has been trail rode most of her life, she's lightly started on barrels and poles. All the hard work is done‼️ Great foundation and mind, just go on with her. She's not spooky or goofy. Not scared of cattle, will cross anything. Has a good work ethic. 14.3 hands, stocky build. Located in southern IL. Asking 🎱.K
Motivated seller.

Chex Mix
7yr old Beautiful Gelding! I love everything about this horse, but I have too many and do not need him....These are the HARD to find ones. Started good on barrels, roping sled, poles, has been sorted off of (extremely cowy) will flat work one like a cutting horse, trail rides like a dream, you will not find one with a better more fancy handle!!!
15.2 hands, stocky build, very correct confirmation. Not for beginner, he is strong. He needs a confident rider to finish him out. Currently clocking in the 2/3D, but SOOO much more to give! Has not had his legs ran off at all! Up to date on everything, will stand tied all day, not buddy sour, good for farrier, etc.
Vet checks welcome at buyers expense. Located in southern IL.

The last 3 days I've had the pleasure of spending time, coaching, learning, and laughing with the most mature and driven young ladies I could ever imagine!

It was so much more than a barrel clinic! We prayed, we set goals, talked about our strengths and weaknesses. Talked about life, and how to endure it with faith in the Lord.

These ladies all pre-teen or teenagers; never once rolled their eyes, talked backed, huffed or puffed, while spending Long, Hot hours on their horses in triple digit heat and downpours this week. I even took their phones at night, and they were completely fine with it! These parents have done such a fantastic job!

All of this couldn't be done without my special speakers, and arena help!
Amanda Harper-Phipps was here encouraging and helping for 2 days. She brings so much light to the atmosphere, these ladies loved her, and learned a lot about goal setting from her! Chad Phipps who spoke the truth about life decisions and how choices can change your future. Lauren Taylor with Southern FS who taught us about nutrition and body weight and how to feed properly while on the road. My parents, who are some of my biggest cheerleaders! My mom would deliver lunch and have it ready when we came in dripping wet each day! My dad who went over farrier work, and horse prepping. And last but definitely not least, my husband; Luke Kelley who gave the girls a great speech about attitude, confidence, and excuses! And spent countless hours on the tractor trying to get our outdoor in the best possible shape with 6in of rain! 🤦‍♀️
The girls asked so many great questions and was craving to learn all they could from each of them!
I pray that they learned and loved their time at K2 Equine Athletes, because they have inspired me! How refreshing to watch like minded youth grow and learn together! They have made friends with people they didn't know and hopefully realized that we all struggle in life and with our horses. I can not thank God, their parents, and my helpers enough! 💕

This awesome guy could be yours! 4yr old bay gelding. Exhibitioning great, he has that really cool move in the turn, so smooth, quick, and effortless, handles all the sites, rides around like a dream, has moved cattle, trail rides all day, fancy handle, laid back but has a motor, etc. He is futurity eligible and entered in the BFA. The sweetest personality! 15.2 hands. Ready to go on with! Papers in comments.
