🌡🐾 Racing season in the UK is fast approaching, I honestly hope everyone has a good time with no problems, remember seasons are getting warmer, prevention is better than cure so think about how to support your dogs, hopefully they will be conditioned by that time? Don't focus too much on the temps (or the number alone), think about the conditions on the day compared to what they've been for a few weeks leading up to the day and so what your dogs are acclimated to, if you don't or haven't been able to train your dogs in warmer conditions then you cannot expect them to be able to tolerate running in warmer conditions without risk of a heat related illness if there is a sudden change on the day of the event, think about the least fit or least heat tolerant dog in the team, don't just focus on the dogs doing well, read each and every dog, know each dog and how they normally run, if you cannot read subtle changes in your dogs while running then you are unlikely to spot a problem early before it can become a significant problem.
Think about Hydration management.

If you don't have your own plan already now is the time to put one together, know what to do if you have a problem, don't rely on others, even if you have help well meaning people don't always know the correct course of action, be self reliant, as the saying goes... "No one is coming, it's up to us", and when it comes to heat injury don't worry about offending people in the moment, concentrate on your dog, they should understand, because what you do in the field can make or break the life of your dog!

Safe trails...

These dogs really are everywhere.
They are often mislabeled as friendly by the guardian/owner as that is how they are seen by them.....They barge right in to "play" with other dogs the second the lead is taken off, before then they are straining, bursting out of their skin to get to whatever they are desiring at the time....and allowing dogs to do this is half the issue.

This behaviour has been rewarded by the "play" and fun of interacting.....Why would they behave any other way around other dogs?
They are not friendly.
Dogs do not consider these dogs friendly either.
Why?
These dogs take no time to assess the situation, their energy is off the charts and they immediately assert themselves into play, and demand interaction from other dogs.

They cannot read cues, or they completely ignore them when given by other dogs.
Reading other dogs play styles is non existent.
Focusing on you or redirecting is impossible.
There is absolutely no impulse control or emotional self regulation.

These dogs are often seen at a dog park running from dog to dog in a hyper aroused state and they often have an almost manic appearance, all of this causes fights, injury, stress and is a direct causation of reactivity occurring in either dog.

I have used the term "socialisation" but socialisation is NOT play....it never was....it is about calmly accepting other dogs exist through controlled exposure.
That calmness allows self regulation, allows reading cues from others and impulse control is practiced.
As a society we have a twisted view that socialisation means dogs play with all other dogs....and they should get on.
The reality of TRUE socialisation is the opposite.

If you do have a dog that has these issues...you can help (but if you reach out to a good behaviour modification trainer, you will save yourself years and years of issues).

Teach engagement with you in ever increasing distractions.
Practice and learn calmness....it is a skill.
Manage the environment for calm and limited exposure at a distance....and reward calm.
Praise and reward when they look away from the other dogs....that IS praise worthy.
Mental enrichment with these dogs helps everything.
Learn the body language of your dog (and others).

You are not alone in struggling with this behaviour, it is very common.
Take a chance that your dog CAN behave in a different way, they just need to be shown how by you or a great trainer.

Limit where and when they can practice this behaviour......and most important dog parks and meeting endless other dogs will do nothing but fuel all of this behaviour.

Please be aware that as temperatures climb I will not walk dogs 🐶 ber 25 degrees not even the fit healthy ones..... I will be trying to schedule as many of the young/old/brachial and over weight types for early mornings and outside of that option I will entertain in your garden or home .... If you'd prefer to not have a walk at anytime please let me know and I will adapt 🥰

We have had a run of lovely weather recently so brings to mind the usual warnings that come with the sun..... Don't walk during the middle of the day .. keep any eye out for heat stroke symptoms... Ensure fluids and shade available etc etc BUT AND HOWEVER please be aware that if you have a youngster and it's their first summer they will need that extra special attention as they will not have learnt to regulate their temperature the same way. And over exposure to heat at this age can mean they continue to be more susceptible going forward ....

This Sunday 21st May is Sunday Social. Get your doggies booked in for 90 minutes of fun.

19/04/2023

Sunday Social is upon us again. This Sunday 23rd April 12.15-1.45 and 2.15-3.45. Book via our app or send us a message.
Sunday social is for all breeds or dogs, the only requirement is that they are friendly and not aggressive. Enjoy a walk around our 8 acres of fields and let your dog's run and play with other dogs. It's the perfect opportunity for your dog to be just a dog for 90 minutes. Don't miss out, your dog's will love it. Booking essential

04/04/2023

Our next Sunday Social is this Sunday 9th April. I realise this is Easter Sunday and there may be low interest. We will require a minimum of 10 dogs to run the session. Please book your dog's space as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly.
Those who have been before, please book via the MyPetWalker app. If it is your first time, send us a message to book.

Sunday Social is a great way for your dog's to meet other dogs and people in a secure and safe environment. This is not a training session and owners are responsible for their dogs at all times. Let your dogs run and play, maybe you can practice some recall or other tricks in an environment full of distraction. With 4 enclosed fields available to use, there is lots of space for everyone.

26/03/2023

Sunday Social is today, 12.15-1.45 and 2.15-3.45.
Its not too late to book if you still want to join us.
Lizzie Lizzie’s Leads will be the running sessions again today as I (Nicola) am in Scotland.
I hope you all enjoy 😁🐩🐕‍🦺🐕

Rawhide is still a popular chew for dogs of all ages - BUT do you really know what rawhide is?

If you are looking for a safe chew for your dog, consider something more natural such as:

- Beef tendon
- Braided lamb
- Goats ears
- Deer antler
- Yak milk chew
- Whimzees/vegitable chew
- Rice bone

We are so lucky now that there are tonnes of new natural pets stores popping up which sell these alternatives.

Whilst that statement suggests you've acknowledged our presence it would be better to see you pop your dog on a lead just whilst others pass.... And if your dog doesn't have the recall it's never advisable to let your dog off lead ..... Situations can escalate needlessly .... Thank you 😊 from all dogs and owners who just want to enjoy their walk too ❤️
