Checking in on Major Tom. He is still undergoing treatment for pancreatitis. It is time for another check up with Dr. Holford which will mean repeat bloodwork and possibly another ultrasound. He still has an ulcer on his tongue so he remains isolated from other cats. The ulcer seems a bit better, but it is all a slow process. He has tiny baby hairs on the top of his head, but it is still very leathery. Years of neglect and raw survival cannot be undone in a few months.
UPDATE on Major Tom: Major Tom has been out of the hospital almost two weeks. He saw one of our vets for a check-up. She felt something large and firm in his abdomen and strongly recommended an ultrasound for him to determine how to proceed with his treatment. Although improving, he still has ulcers on his tongue and throat, so he continues to need isolation from other cats for the time being. Following Dr. Linderman's recommendation, he saw Dr. Holford at RIVER for an ultrasound. The ultrasound shows a grossly enlarged pancreas and scant fluid in the abdomen. His weight has remained the same despite a ravenous appetite. The bill at RIVER was $1,100 as a pancreatitis profile test was also done. We did not do a free T4 test yet, as that is an additional expensive test, and pancreatitis is suspected at this time over hyperthyroidism. He has dropped down to fluids every other day and seems to be doing well on that regimen. Every day, I feel he is showing improvement. I wish I could bathe him, but I am not very skilled in Major Tom wrangling, as he REALLY DOES NOT LIKE WATER! This weekend I am going to try a soapy washcloth on his paws. I've been working on his top side, but he is spicy when you go low. He is a real character, and loves to talk, actually shout, to let you know what he wants from you. As always, we appreciate the gifts of food and other items for his care as well as donations. If you wish to donate toward his continued care and vet bill, please donate to [email protected].
Major Tom had a vet appointment today. He is still 8% dehydrated, so he will be receiving subQ fluids twice daily. Dr. Linderman has recommended an ultrasound of his abdomen based on abnormal feeling on his physical exam. To save money, we did not do xrays today as the ultrasound will give more information. Clinically, he continues to improve, so we are hopeful that he will be able to enjoy his last years with us.
