Today, marks one week since Princess Poppy passed away. Alice and I were so fortunate to have volunteered for two organizations, Pets on Wheels and HonorHealth. We may retire Poppy’s badges, but we will always have her spirit and love in our hearts.
We will miss hearing those little toe nails as she entered the cancer center and the clinic chemotherapy infusion room. We will miss hearing, “Poppy’s in the house,” as she entered the buildings. We will miss witnessing the immediate smile on faces when she entered the room as if to announce ,” I am here!” We will miss seeing the calmness and joy that she could bring to patients and staff by just holding her. We will miss going to Chick-fil-A after volunteering. We will miss the employees shouting out, “Poppy’s here” while waiting for nuggets. We will miss seeing Poppy in a new dress for every holiday with painted toenails matching the dress . We will miss patients asking, when will she be back. Most importantly, we will miss her.
We are often asked, exactly what does a Pet Therapy dog do. Part of that answer can be captured in photos. The last photo is one of my favorites . This young lady came for her chemotherapy in the afternoon. Her Father accompanied her every time. They had a wonderful relationship. On this particular day, she was the last patient in the chemotherapy infusion room and not feeling well. She called Poppy over. Poppy put up her paws and stayed that way for a very long time while being pet. Pet Therapy is about bringing joy and love to others.
