If anyone is looking to adopt a horse and doesn't want to wait for the Expo, Flame is looking for a home. His trainer got transferred out of state for work, so he had to withdraw from the Challenge. We're happy for his trainer's job opportunities, but we're sad that Flame is missing out on a chance to shine!

Flame is an 11 year old, purebred (but not registered) Arabian gelding. He's 15.2 hh and has some bone to him - he was bred to be an endurance horse. Unfortunately, his breeder was elderly and Flame didn't get a lot of handling before he came to Bluebonnet in early 2023. He was enrolled in the Challenge last year, too, but his trainer had to withdraw for personal reasons and he didn't get to show.

Flame's trainer this year spent time on ground work. Flame is now easy to catch, loads into a trailer by himself, and stands tied for grooming. He could pick up all four feet for cleaning and bathe Flame, but his farrier had been unable to trim his back hooves without sedation.

He also taught Flame to wear a western saddle and a snaffle bit and lunge at a walk, trot, and canter.

Flame is a smart horse and a gorgeous mover. He could be a nice pleasure horse or maybe an open show hunter pleasure type horse with additional training.

If adopted as a companion, he will need an intermediate level handler. He could also be adopted by an advanced rider who has experience training their own horses.

His adoption fee is $800, he's located in Hollard, Texas, and he's really hoping to be adopted soon! He deserves his own family.

We would like to welcome Kaylon Sullins Robinson back as a presenter for the 2024 Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge. Kaylon was a presenter at the very first Expo in 2007, and she's been a Bluebonnet supporter ever since!

Kaylon Sullins Robinson is a horse trainer and riding coach in Victoria, Texas. She spent most of her childhood training horses with her mother, Cathy Sullins. In 2007 Kaylon started KnP Training and Lessons to help everyday horse owners achieve their horsemanship goals and open their own gate to endless possibilities. Specializing in western performance, competitive trail, and all around horsemanship, she offers a straight forward approach to training while putting the horse’s physical and mental well being first.

You can learn about Kaylon at https://knptraining.com/

Kaylon and her mom, Cathy, will also be running the stick horse show for the kids at the Challenge again, so be sure to stop by and tell them hi!

We have less than a month to go until the Expo, and I know a lot of folks are getting excited about adopting and bringing home a new horse.

I love the adopter’s excitement – I’ve gotten to adopt at the Expo one year, and it was such an amazing experience.

But not everyone has a great experience, and we need to change that. Many years, we have some horses returned within a week or two and other horses returned within the first year. Let’s work together to change that.

On our end, we’ve started labeling what types of riders horses need, and we’ll be listing that on their webpages started later today. And our adoption team is assigning rider levels to potential adopters and advising them to look at horses based on that level. We hope to make better matches that way. We also strongly encourage you to talk to the trainers or foster homes who have the horses and listen to what they say.

But, there are things that you, as an adopter, can also do to give you and your horse the best chance of success after adoption – whether you adopt at the Expo or even from us.

For those who adopt at the Expo or adopt a horse at his/her trainer’s place: remember that these horses are working hard. Trainers often work with horses 4-5 days per week – especially for those competing in the Challenge. Then at the event, the horses are ridden on Friday, Saturday morning, for their competition, and then by you before you decide to adopt. They’re tired by the time they leave the event.

When you get your new horse home, do not ride them that night (yes, we’ve had people do that). Do not ride on Sunday. In fact, unless the trainer tells you otherwise, I wouldn’t ride that horse for the first week you have him home.

On his first day home, your new horse should get a stall or paddock (preferably a paddock) next to other horses so they can meet their new herd mates in a safe way. Give them a day or two to meet everyone over the fence. That also gives your horse a chance to rest without having to figure out their place in a new herd.

After a couple of days, take your horse out to groom them, lead them around, maybe give them a few treats. Take some time to get to know each other before hopping back on.

Horses can live for 30 years and can be ridden late into their 20s, sometimes into their 30s, so you have many years together. You don’t need to ride right away. You need to get to know each other and spend time together. For that entire first week, spend time grooming, doing in hand work, and maybe some lunging.

After that first week, then start some riding – in an arena or round pen at first. Don’t make your first ride out on the trails, at a play day, a horse show, or some other event. Get to know each other and trust each other first.

If you start riding and have a problem with your horse, get some professional help. Either reach out to the trainer who had the horse to see if they have suggestions or get a couple of lessons with someone you trust. Everyone needs help from time to time (even professionals take lessons or attend clinics).

On the flip side of things, don’t take a green horse home, put them out to pasture, not ride or handle the horse, and then bring them in in six months to ride and expect the horse to be the same as they were at the Expo. Sometimes life gets in the way and your best plans go haywire. If that happens, expect to bring the horse back to work slowly and expect that the horse is going to have lost some of their skills during the downtime.

Also, when you bring a new horse home and introduce them to your existing herd (hopefully after a few days of meeting them over the fence), don’t be surprised if they squeal, chase each other, bite, or kick. Every year we have a horse returned because this happens. The adopter says, “He just can’t get along with my horses!” – but this is how horses sometimes figure out a new herd order. It becomes a problem if they won’t stop chasing or if one horse corners another one.

We want to get horses adopted so we can help more. But even more importantly, we want horses and adopters to be happy together. We want long-lasting matches. We want the perfect horse-human love story. Please help us make that happen.

Tina's been in Bluebonnet over a year and is hoping to find an adopter at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge. She's competing in the in hand 12 and under division with Elaina Battenfield.

Tina is a 9 year old, 13 hh, grade pony mare. She came to Bluebonnet last year from a rescue who was overwhelmed. Her foster home worked with her on her ground manners, and she was then assigned to youth handler Elaina.

Elaina and Tina have worked well on the ground, perfecting those ground manners and introducing obstacles. Elaina has also been riding Tina at a walk and trot, ba****ck with a hater, around their place.

Tina is very green, so she's going to need an advanced rider, or an intermediate who is working with a trainer, to bring her along. But she's a fun and sweet little mare who is ready to take on the world.

You can follow her progress at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100092979230471

Tina will be available for adoption on October 5th at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge in Taylor, Texas. If you are interested in adopting, get your adoption application in now!

The list of who is interested in adopting which Challenge horses starts tomorrow morning. We are about to get very busy, so I ask you all to be patient with us. Our adoption team and fostering team are volunteers, so please be nice to them. They have a hard job trying to make the best possible matches.

Giovanni has got to be one of the cuter little guys in the 2024 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. He's making his Challenge debut in the In Hand 12 and under division along with new Challenge participant Waverley Meier.

Giovanni is a 17 year old, 8.1 hh, miniature horse gelding who came to us after his owner passed away. He was a stallion when he arrived and barely halter broke, but he was quickly gelded and then his foster, who ended up adopting him, got his basic training done. He came back earlier this year because his adopter had to cut back, but I know she's enjoying following him in the Challenge!

Waverly has been working hard to perfect Giovanni's ground manners and teach him to navigate trail obstacles in hand. He's going to make someone a great pet, a companion to a lonely horse, or a fun agility or in hand obstacle horse. He could even be trained to drive.

You can follow Giovanni at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559300733084

He'll be available for adoption on October 5th at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge in Taylor, Texas. If you are interested in adopting, get your adoption application in now!

Thank you to Allen and Kristin Johnson for your Grand Champion level sponsorship of the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge.

Allen's been a Board Co-Chair for nearly two years now. Before that, he served as a Director of Bluebonnet, foster home, volunteer, and adopter. He adopted Grand aka Mr. 1,000 after meeting him at the Expo in 2018.

Did you know that our sponsors help us put on this event that is responsible for about half of our adoptions each year? That's pretty cool, isn't it!? Thank you to Allen, Kristin, and all of the Expo sponsors. You are making a difference!

We're excited to welcome Lindsay Burer – Nutrition Consultant back to the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge on October 5th in Taylor, Texas.

Lindsay Burer is an Equine Nutrition Consultant for Bluebonnet Feeds and Stride Animal Health. Although she grew up a city girl from Tampa, Florida, the equine addiction started at a young age. She completed her undergrad at the University of Florida in 2011, and in 2014, left her family’s business and moved to Texas to start a career in equine nutrition. Lindsay is passionate about helping horses through educating their owners and is fascinated with the role diet plays in health and disease. Lindsay has a Masters degree in Functional Nutrition and incorporates her knowledge into farm and barn nutrition programs. She currently lives in New Braunfels, TX with her other half, Randal, Atticus (cat), and Hazel (dog). She loves to spend her free time on the river, in the mountains, reading, traveling, and of course, with her horses Easy, Jolie, and Odette.

She'll be at the Expo giving a presentation on equine nutrition and talking to folks at the Bluebonnet Feeds booth.

You can learn more about Bluebonnet Feeds at https://bluebonnetfeeds.com/

Jaxon Adviv will be showing in the In Hand Division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with trainer Chrys Kempton.

Jaxon Advis is a 16 year old, grade gelding. He came to us last year from a rescue who was overwhelmed, and we don't know his history before then. His foster home had fallen in love with him and adopted him, but she returned him after he bucked her off. She had a lot of vetting done to determine if there was a physical cause for his bucking, but nothing was found. (She went above and beyond on the vetting). She worried it was a mismatch and hoped he could go on and become a nice riding horse for someone else.

He initially started off in the professional division of this year's Challenge, but it became clear that his bucking issue was not to be easily fixed. We're not sure what's happened to him in his life, but it seems like it was pretty traumatic.

So Chrys has focused on ground work with Jaxon. He's now doing well being caught, standing for the farrier, and navigating obstacles in hand. She's working to reintroduce him to the saddle as well, but they won't be riding by the Expo.

If someone is looking for a pet/non-riding horse, he could do well with an intermediate handler and he might enjoy some in hand obstacle work and would love lots of attention. If someone wants to restart him under saddle, he's going to need an expert/professional experienced with working with horses with trauma.

You can learn more about Jaxon (and read how things are going in his own words!) at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093537704076

He'll be available for adoption on October 5th at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge in Taylor, Texas. If you are interested in adopting, get your adoption application in now!

Please welcome Jodi Brassard back for more great presentations at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo this year!

Jodi is an All Around Horse Trainer from Granger, Texas. She is the owner of Brassard Equine Services, LLC. and has been professionally training, showing, and giving lessons for over 20 years. She credits her mother for introducing her to horses at a young age, and has been riding ever since.

Jodi’s motto is Making Horse And Rider A Team, and has worked with students of all ages and disciplines. For both training and lessons, Jodi always emphasizes safety, explaining “safety is the first, middle, and last thing you do”. On the training side she likes her horses to feel fluid and confident. This ensures the necessary foundation for a great companion.

In 2016, Jodi was looking to add to the relationship and well being of her equine companions when she found Traditional Chinese Medicine. Adding Acupressure to her training program was very exciting, and was the answer to “Getting and keeping your horse sound”, as Jodi says. Continuing to expand Brassard Equine, Jodi became an Associate Instructor with Elemental Acupressure, added business partners Espana Silk, an all natural grooming product line, and TOML USA, which is CBD products for horses.

Jodi loves trail riding and working cattle with her rescue horse, Keeva, (although Jodi will say it was KEEVA who adopted HER). Jodi and Keeva regularly travel to present clinics in training, riding, acupressure, and bodywork. They are often accompanied by her energetic dogs, Luna and Cooper.

You can learn more about Jodi at https://www.facebook.com/jodi.boman?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Be sure to check out her demos during the Expo and visit her booth in the vendor hall.

Rockstar is competing in the professional division of the 2024 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with amateur Justin Blackburn. He was originally enrolled in the Challenge with a pro, and when the pro withdrew, Justin jumped in to take over riding and training Rockstar. Thank you, Justin!

Rockstar is a five year old, 14.2 hh, grade stock-type gelding. He came to Bluebonnet as a yearling when his owners were investigated for neglect. He's long since recovered from those days, and this year he got started under saddle.

Justin says he's a nice riding horse, although green, and he would keep him if he were a bit bigger. He's still green so he's going to need a confident intermediate rider to bring him along, but he's pretty sweet and laid back and will make someone an awesome pleasure or trail horse.

You can follow his progress at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083320272451

Rockstar will be available for adoption on October 5th at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge in Taylor, Texas. If you are interested in adopting, get your adoption application in now!

Goose is going to be showing off in the In Hand division of the 2024 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with trainer Courtney Fain.

Goose is a handsome, 18 year old, 16 hh, grade stock type horse. He came to us from another rescue who was overwhelmed, and we're not sure what happened to him before he came into the rescue world, but we don't think it was good. Goose has been with Courtney and her husband for a year now. When he arrived he was terrified and reactive. She's been working with him on the ground, and he's doing much better, but he's still very reactive just wearing a saddle.

He'll be available for adoption to an intermediate handler as a pet/companion/in hand horse. But he'll only be available to an expert for saddle training/riding.

You can learn more about Goose and his progress at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093607359930.

He'll be available for adoption on October 5th at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge in Taylor, Texas. If you are interested in adopting, get your adoption application in now!

Tally is competing in the Non Pro In Hand division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Andre Moxley.

Tally is a 16 year old, 15.1 hh, unregistered Paint mare who came to us last year from a neglect case. She hadn't been handled in several years when she arrived at Bluebonnet.

Andre has been working with Tally on the ground, perfecting her ground work skills and getting her ready for a new home.

She'll be ready to be a companion and pet, in hand obstacle or agility horse, or she could still be started under saddle.

You can see Tally's training progress at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559825537628

Caspian is in the non pro division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Katie Kirk. Katie garciously agreed to take him on in addition to her Challenge horse, Flynn, after his original Training Challenge partner had to withdraw.

Caspian is a nine year old, 15.2 hh, grade gelding. He came to us last year from a rescue who was overwhelmed, and he was supposed to be in the Challenge last year but his partner had to withdraw at the last minute.

After he had several months off from riding, Katie brought him back to work and they've been doing great. They've been hitting the trails, practicing trail obstacles, and refining his riding skills. He's still going to be green by the Challenge, but he's going to have a solid foundation to build on and someone is going to get a great, sweet riding horse when they adopt him!

You can follow his training progress at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100094023837033

Caspian will be available for adoption on October 5th at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge in Taylor, Texas. If you are interested in adopting, get your adoption application in now!

Stella Rose is back into the Training Challenge, and this year she's competing in the Non Pro Under Saddle division with Katina Jimenez. Last year the pair was entered in the In Hand division but had to withdraw when Stella Rose got hurt.

Katina has worked with Stella Rose on the ground, perfecting her ground work and basic skills, and they've recently begun riding. She says that Stella Rose is doing great and is a joy to ride!

Stella Rose is a 9 year old, 14.1 hh, grade cremello mare - she's hoping to find a home this year who will love her and have adventures with her.
