Friday food for thought..
Nutrition is something I am asked about most days at work. There are so many different foods out there it can be a bit overwhelming with all the different advice and opinions. There is no wrong or right here as all dogs have different requirements and needs and that’s ok!
My response is ‘Try to feed the highest quality diet that your budget and lifestyle will allow that suits your dog’.
Over the years I have fed kibble, raw and a home made fresh cooked diet. Good nutrition is so important for health and wellbeing. The Spaniels have an extremely active lifestyle so I feed and care for them like athletes. I chose to feed as I like to feed a fresh less processed food and the spaniels LOVE it. They don’t suffer with ‘wind’ and we have less ‘waste’ to pick up which for me is a bonus with three!
Some dogs thrive on kibble, some owners don’t have the freezer space or the budget for frozen foods. Many dogs are happy and healthy on a combination of all sorts which is totally fine! Let’s face it.. some street dogs live for years and years on scraps and raiding bins!
Another question I am asked regularly is ‘how much should I feed?’ Every food has ‘guidelines’ on the rough amount to feed for your dogs weight. I however, never weigh or measure any of their food as if I fed Lincoln the recommended amount for his weight he would be skin and bone as he is active for most of the day! If they have a quiet rest day I feed a little less and if we do a long day out or a long run I feed a little more. If they start to look too slim I increase their feed and if they develop a little extra covering I reduce it. A 10 kg dog with a sedentary lifestyle wouldn’t need the same fuel as a 10kg dog covering 30km per day!
As long as you are doing the best for your dog, within your budget that fits in with your lifestyle, then you’re doing a great job! ❤️
