Are you having a hard time with potty training? Would you like your pup to signal you when they need to go outside? This is a relatively easy way to teach your dog how to ring a bell to get your help in opening the door.
This means you can be in the next room and not have to keep quite a close eye on your pup. There are many different types of bells to choose from including electronic ones. We chose this easy bell because that is what my client happened to have already. This only took us 10 minutes to get this response from Bodie.

The steps are simple.
1. Train to shake a closed hand.
2. Put closed hand over a bell and remove hand as your pup try to hit your hand
3. Start to fade your hand away from the bell gradually to show your pup the hand is not that important and its the bell that is important to hit.
4. put near a door and once your puppy hits it open the door and toss food out.

Do this over and over again.

I often work with aggressive dogs and they come in all shapes and sizes. From feirce chihuahuas, grumpy goldens, nippy cattle dogs, and pi**ed off poodles, any dog can show aggressive behavior if the environment doesn't allow for deescalation. There are very few dogs who are dominantly aggressive like some others would have you believe.
However the most likely groups of breeds to have difficulty with typical human living environments are dogs who are genetically programmed to respond to their environment with chasing, nipping, herding, and warning/protecting.
These are herding breeds like cattle dogs, shepherds of all kinds, and protective breeds like an Akita, Mastiff, Rottweiler or Great Pyrenees, or Belgian Malinois.

In reality these breeds can often live happy lives in typical home environments but they require extra help with understanding their roles within the home. This means extra socialization, management, and mental/physical stimulation.

But please don't be surprised that your German Shepherd is patrolling the back yard when left alone, or alarmed when your Aussie/Heeler is chasing and herding your children. We made these dogs this way by our own intentional breeding.
If you need help with reducing reactive or concerning behavior, reach out to a professional behavior consultant like myself before things escalate.

Many people are away from their dogs all day and have little time to get them outside for a walk. However, regardless of this, it is not a good idea to walk them when they are in a highly aroused state of mind. Your dog has lived in a void of stimulation all day and if you are walking them right away, you are probably not getting their best. They can't help but pull, ignore you, bark at people and dogs they see, and so on. This especially goes for puppies and adolescent dogs.
This is not the time for corrections but rather some understanding of what is happening. To fix this, just offer your dog some mental stimulation prior to walking. This is a good idea for most walks. Simple take some food and have them scavenge around the home or yard for a few minutes. Practice training attention, sit, look, hand targeting and even some tricks. This will take the edge off and they will be more able to take in a nice walk. They will likely respond to you better too since you have practiced those exercises already. Now go for a nice calm walk!

Did you know that pain is one of the most common contributors to aggressive behavior in your dog? Are you aware that up to half of aggression cases may have a pain component to them? This is true in my training experience and of one of the most esteemed behavior professionals in the country, Dr. Chris Pachel. Dr. Pachel was kind enough to host an aggression conference for trainers like myself and carefully explained how pain is often overlooked and treated with amazing results in aggression cases. Pain is however not always easy to spot and many veterinarians can miss it. It is worth considering a veterinary exam if your dog has any signs of aggression, especially if you feel the behaviors came on fast.

Happy Spooktacular Halloween! I had an opportunity to it down with one of the creepiest and ghoulish characters in the dog training industry. I asked 100 dogs what scares them the most and this was their answer. Ladies and Gentleman, the king of pain is here with me today to chat about the nuances of dog training, his love for popcorn, and he even brings his newest student, who is already showing no signs of trying anything at all. Enjoy the sillyness!

Adolescence starts around 6 months and usually lasts until at least 2 yrs of age. Up to 3 yrs for larger dogs. This is the hardest time of your dogs life. Among the challenges are first, neurobiology. Your dogs brain is under construction and the connections aren't very strong. This is when they crave stimulation most and are eager to explore away from you. They are emotional and hormonal. They generally have a hard time weighing consequences which is why even a well trained adolescent is unreliable. This is when you stick to you guns and step up enrichment, use long leashes and set boundaries. Lower your expectations and you will be delighted. Lastly, this is not the time to lose your cool and increase punishment (ecollars etc.) Your dog is having a hard time and it's not because your a bad trainer or not exciting enough. Its for all of the above and more. Practice the basics, reward all attention and manage their environment, and one day it will all pay off.

Are you having trouble with your reactive dog? Do they bark and lunge at other dogs or people when out on walks? This can be very frustrating and there is a solution that can work in just a matter of a few weeks, if not sooner. Lynn here just finished up with us on our 5 lesson plan for her granddog Vader. He went from being known as the dog to watch out for to the dog everyone wants to say high to.

Stuart is a new rescue puppy who has been growling when his young friend tries to pet him or snuggle with him. First off, many dogs, young and old can find "snuggling" less than desirable and that is ok. It is a let down for some though. However, I interpret this as Stuart doesn't have a solid relationship yet and needs to know how rewarding it can be to be pet calmly by children. So ahead of time we trained him to love laying on a mat. The we asked if he could be pet while I feed him food for tolerating the petting. So far so good, even if some of the petting here is a little too much for him. ( Which we adjusted for him when it was too much) He did choose a better option to say no than a growl so I take it as a win here. Finally, I want my clients to look at growling as communication, just like anyone saying "I would rather not" or "not right now thanks". That way we learn to adapt to what our dogs are comfortable with and work towards our goals of conditioning more predictability, tolerance, and eventually enjoyment.

Many dogs are reactive and barky at dogs or other animals on the TV. Cricket here is reactive to both dogs on TV and outside. This is an exercise that we started on her training mat that we already trained her to go to and lay down. Cricket is reactive to dogs because she is undersocialized and easily frustrated that she can't get to dogs fast enough. So this session we rewarded her for looking at the TV with dogs on it and eventually captured her looking at us after seeing the dog images. You can see she had an opportunity to react at the end but came excitedly running back to her owner who was thrilled with her improvement in one session.
