ADOPTION SUCCESS!

We are overjoyed to share that Duke has found his forever home!

This sweet boy was rescued back in June 2024 by a Good Samaritan who saw a social media post from his owner threatening to shoot him if someone didn’t come get him because he had eaten one of their chickens. When they went to retrieve Duke, they found him being kept in a tiny crate, emaciated, with inflamed skin and large patches of his coat missing. On intake, Duke weighed only 38 lbs and was miserable from his skin infections. Now his unique salt-and-pepper coat has mostly filled in, and he weighs over 70 lbs!

Duke now lives on a farm north of Frederick and has a loving family that includes a mom, dad, two kids, two dogs, two cats, horses, chickens, and even emus! His life is full. His new mom, Lexi, is a former WDR adopter who followed Duke’s story. She responded to our plea for help and offered to foster him. We knew that Duke would need some training support in his transition to family dog, and fortunately, his new family is committed to giving him both the love and structure he needs.

Duke came to the DC metro area this past November and Lexi and the kids met him at transport. The family decided to formally adopt him last week. Lexi shared this update:

*******

“We think Duke is a good soul who’s suffered terribly and deserved a soft landing. We were never planning to adopt a third dog, but from the first FB photo I saw of his sad, skinny self I had a feeling we would be growing from a pair to a pack. I showed him to my husband and said I was going to follow his progress as he recovered from his mistreatment. I knew that would take time, but that eventually he’d come north when he was ready for adoption. I checked every day for updates. I even resisted when he was posted for adoption the first time, reasoning that if someone else wanted to take Duke in, that would be for the best. But my husband knew that the second time you posted him because he hadn’t yet found a foster, it would be all over.

When we went to pick him up, I was a little shocked by how big (and handsome) he was. Photos really don’t do him justice. And even though he was nervous from the trip and the other dogs and all the new people, there was something about the way he looked at me with trust in his eyes that made me want to give him the best home possible.

He’s certainly come with some challenges. Food is extremely important to Duke and he gets super excited at meal times. He’s had to get used to two new dogs, a couple cats, and a farm full of other assorted animals. But he’s risen to the occasion and become best buddies with our other Worthy Dog Gusto. Gus works hard to teach Duke all his worst habits from chasing the cats to barking at deliveries but it comes off a bit different from a 73-pound dog with a deep bark than from a yappy little chihuahua mix. As Duke becomes more comfortable in our home, he’s displayed some of the shepherd breed’s protective nature, so we’re working closely with a trainer to learn how best to work with his instincts while also providing leadership and guidance. We’re confident he can make the necessary adjustments because he’s so bright and eager to please us. And we’re willing to put in the work because he’s worth it.

We can’t thank Worthy Dog enough for all the support we’ve been given. While never making us feel like we had to turn our fostering of Duke into an adoption, they were always so encouraging and positive offering sessions with a hand-picked trainer to ensure a smooth transition into our care. Frequent check-ins made us feel like he was the only dog in the whole rescue, yet I know they give all their special “clients” this same level of attention. While I’ve heard from people that the cost of rescue dogs seems high, I know that our fee for Duke’s adoption won’t begin to make a dent in the funds that have been spent on his rehabilitation and care. Worthy Dog is most concerned with each dog finding their very best placement and going on to live their very best life. We certainly hope Duke feels that he’s found that with us!”

*********

Duke's journey from a neglected dog to a cherished family member highlights the impact that compassionate individuals and rescue organizations can have on animals coming from unstable situations His story is a testament to the resilience of rescue dogs and the joy they bring to their new families.

Tommy’s Board & Train Update!

Tommy he was found running as a stray and taken to a rural county shelter in SC. As a shy boy in need of confidence building, Tommy spent months at the shelter with no interest from adopters, and as a large black dog—a group that often gets overlooked—his chances of finding a home at the shelter were slim.

Thankfully, Tommy caught the attention of one of our dedicated foster moms, Laine, who offered to foster him. Tommy quickly and seamlessly integrated into her pack, and it didn’t take long for his sweet nature to shine through. He also displayed a natural talent for getting along with other dogs and clearly loved being part of a pack. However, it became evident that Tommy felt uneasy when left alone and lacked confidence in unfamiliar environments.

We engaged one of our trusted trainers, Joel, from Sally's Way Dog Services, for a two-week board-and-train program to help build his confidence so that Tommy would feel more at ease with crate time and being alone.

After investing some time building a relationship and gaining his trust, Joel took Tommy out to busy areas to try new things and face new challenges. One major hurdle was getting Tommy to engage with different surfaces. At first, he avoided stepping on certain objects, choosing to jump over them instead. By gradually introducing new textures, he learned to navigate uncertainty, adapt to sensory changes, and develop problem-solving skills. This not only built Tommy’s confidence but also gave him a job, helping him stay present rather than hyper-aware of his environment.

Joel also did "place work" with Tommy, teaching him to settle down while the family moved around, reinforcing that doing nothing is OK. This skill is crucial for a calm home life and allowed Joel to involve his young toddle daughter in a controlled exercise.

Tommy’s biggest challenge was the lobby—a high-distraction environment with constant noise, people, and dogs. Initially overwhelming, with practice, Tommy learned to settle down vs. pacing anxiously, he relaxed, proving how far his confidence had grown and his ability to navigate the world with a calm, composed mindset.

Good Boy Tommy!

PUPDATE! Kansas is a beautiful Rough Collie who has been with us for three weeks. Originally purchased from a breeder, she was rehomed when her first family's older dog struggled to accept her as a puppy. She then found a loving home, but unfortunately, her family is moving and unable to take her along. Wanting the best for Kansas, they reached out to our rescue for help.

Now in foster care, Kansas is living with her two foster parents and their two dogs, with regular visits from the grandkids. She’s proven to be incredibly friendly, does well meeting new people and dogs, and was just cat-tested—showing no interest even when the cat hissed and arched its back. We believe she could co-exist with a cat and would thrive with a young, playful dog companion.

Kansas is an active, intelligent pup who needs an equally active family. She is not a city or condo dog—she will do best in a home with space to run and play. She will do best in a home with a yard and a playmate to match her energy.

We checked in with her foster mom, Cindy, for a 3-week update:

"Kansas has settled in so nicely. It took her about two or three weeks to truly feel at home. The first few days, she paced around the house, unsure of her new surroundings. She was friendly but not fully engaged. Now, she follows me around, loves to lay by my feet, and enjoys belly rubs and ear scratches. She’s also discovered the joy of playing with her toys! Her new family just needs to be patient and give her time to build trust—once she does, she’s an amazing companion.

She needs an active family—someone who will take her walking or hiking daily. She’s fantastic in the car, loves outdoor adventures, and could easily walk for miles. She meets new people and dogs beautifully and wants to play with everyone she meets. I think having another young, playful dog in the home would be ideal for her. I’ve been setting up playdates with our neighbor’s young dog at least once, sometimes twice a day, and Kansas lights up with joy every time.

During the day, she’s active, but she does wind down at night. She’s fully housetrained, has no destructive tendencies, and sleeps freely with the other dogs. Kansas is truly a wonderful dog who just needs the right home to thrive"

A special thank you to Jon Clingenpeel for his continued support of our rescue over the years. Jon is a talented artist and a proud WDR adopter—he welcomed Gidget into his life back in 2017. Since launching his commissioned artwork, Jon has generously donated a portion of each sale to Worthy Dog Rescue whenever the subject is an adopted or foster pup—a beautiful way to give back and honor his beloved Gidget. He’s also supported and was the inspiration behind our annual Portraits for Pups fundraiser, donating a portrait to help raise money to save more dogs. We are so grateful for dedicated supporters like Jon, whose kindness and talent make a real difference. Thank you, Jon, for sharing your gift with our community. ❤️

Here’s one of Jon’s recent pieces featuring WDR alum Caroline, who sadly passed away recently. This beautiful portrait was a gift to her owners, and it brought them so much joy to see Caroline’s sweetness captured so perfectly.

Meet Lizzy. This sweet girl is looking for a fresh start after losing the only family she’s ever known. Lizzy's owners are going through a divorce, and neither can keep her. She’s a loveable Beagle who adores kids and enjoys the companionship of other dogs. She will make a wonderful family dog and is just a young pup with a full life ahead. We are happy to help her find her forever home.

Lizzy is currently being fostered in an active home that includes a mom, dad, three boys (ages 6, 8, and 11), and two dogs. Coming from a quieter home as an only dog, she was initially nervous and unsure of her new surroundings. To ease the transition, her foster mom, Ashley, did a leashed introduction in the backyard, allowing Lizzy to gradually get familiar with her new pack. Within a few hours, she began to relax and explore, and now she runs and plays as if she’s been part of the family forever!

*********
We checked in with with foster mom, Ashley, for an update:

Lizzy is an absolute joy to foster! She’s a happy, smart girl who catches on quickly. She’s already learned our nightly routine and responds to “get in your bed” at bedtime. Fully house-trained, Lizzy even came with potty bells—she rings them at the door when she needs to go outside. She’s picked up commands like sit, lay, and stay, and while her leash skills are still a work in progress (she loves to sniff everything and chase critters), she’s making improvements.

Lizzy absolutely adores kids and will make a fantastic family dog. She would thrive in a home with either a pup playmate or children to keep her active. She loves to run, play fetch, and explore the outdoors, so having a companion—whether human or canine—will be key for her happiness.

While she enjoys playing with other dogs, Lizzy is very people-focused. She’s a little shy at first but warms up quickly, greeting visitors with a wagging tail. She always wants to be where her humans are, and nothing makes her happier than snuggling up with the kids.

Lizzy is an affectionate, active pup who will bring so much joy to the right home. If you’re looking for a playful, loving companion who adores kids and enjoys the company of other dogs, she just might be the one. Apply today and give Lizzy the forever home she deserves!

Our resident senior white fluffies, Charlie and Clyde, are still waiting for their forever homes!

Charlie and Clyde were surrendered to our rescue by the only family they had ever known. Coming from a dysfunctional home, they were kept in a basement with little care or engagement. When they arrived, both were in dire need of dental work, suffering from pain and infection. Now fully vetted and feeling much better, they are thriving in SEPARATE foster homes, finally receiving the love and attention they’ve always deserved.

Charlie is an easygoing, affectionate boy who craves connection and love. While he’s a senior, he still has a spring in his step—especially for meals and walks! He’s the perfect companion to take anywhere—visiting friends, on road trips, or just running errands. Social and adaptable, Charlie hasn’t met a person or pup he doesn’t like. He has great house manners but needs regular potty breaks. He’d do best in a home with a flexible schedule and a dog buddy to keep him company.

Clyde is a gentle, laidback soul with the most soulful eyes. He loves to be near his people and enjoys snuggling with his dog buddies. He would thrive in a quiet, loving home with someone retired or working from home who wants a devoted companion. Clyde enjoys short, leisurely strolls but is just as happy relaxing at home.

As a senior, Clyde has some health needs. He has a grade 4-5 heart murmur and takes daily medication, which he’s responding well to. His care includes bi-yearly bloodwork and regular echocardiograms every 6 to 12 months to monitor his condition.

Both boys are ready to bring love and companionship into their forever homes. Could Charlie or Clyde be the perfect fit for you? 💙

ADOPTION SUCCESS – 3 Years!

It’s been a little over three years since we rescued Harley (now Murray) from a life of isolation and neglect. He had been living in deplorable conditions due to his owner’s declining health from dementia over the past decade. Kept crated almost constantly, he did not have consistent food and water, or essential vet care. His prolonged confinement led to severe muscle atrophy, limiting his mobility. Murray also suffered from untreated skin and ear infections, numerous growths that needed removal, and extensive dental issues.

Then came his happily ever after.

Murray was adopted by an incredible couple, Emily and Andrew—prior adopters who welcomed him with open arms. His transformation has been remarkable! He immediately bonded with his best friend, Harlan, and has been showered with the love and care he always deserved.

We recently received this heartwarming update:

"Murray is doing great! He and Harlan are still madly in love. Everyone who meets him melts because he’s so sweet. His back legs have weakened a bit, but with regular physical therapy and acupuncture, he’s doing well. Nothing slows him down—he’s so resilient! Here are a couple of recent photos, including one with Santa, who couldn’t resist scooping him up for a hug!"

We’re so grateful for adopters like Emily and Andrew who give dogs like Murray a second chance at a wonderful life. ❤️

PUPDATE! Oliver doesn’t mind the pouring rain, standing water, or mud—he’d happily play in it all day if given the chance! His foster mom, Lou, has affectionately nicknamed him Pig Pen! 🤣🐷🐾

This handsome boy is truly an awesome dog! He’s social, meets new people and dogs with ease, and fits right in as a great pack member. He’s currently being fostered with two German Shepherds, Knox and Dozer. Knox has become his best buddy and favorite playmate—they love romping in the yard and splashing through the mud together! Oliver is also very respectful to the elder dog, Dozer, and has seamlessly integrated into the pack with his calm, balanced energy.

Oliver has excellent house manners and is fully housebroken—he hasn’t had a single accident in his foster home. He is crate-trained and Lou crates him for a few hours during the day if they’re both out of the home. He’s still a young dog with a knack for mischief. At night, he’s earned free-roam privileges and sleeps peacefully with the pack.

We checked in with his foster mom, Lou, for an update:

“Oliver is the sweetest boy who absolutely loves to cuddle. Despite his young age, he has a surprisingly calm, moderate energy level. He rarely barks but has the cutest puppy-like whine, which is both adorable and funny. Overall, he’s a gentle, loving soul, soaking up all the affection and comfort he’s been missing. He adores warm blankets, snuggling on the couch, and is a big fan of butt scratches!

His introduction to my boys was one of the easiest I’ve ever done—he’s naturally submissive and happy to follow their lead. All three dogs sit calmly while we prepare their food, and there hasn’t been a single disagreement between them.

Everyone who meets Oliver can’t stop raving about what a wonderful dog he is. He’s not only gorgeous but also incredibly sweet, and he’s blossoming into a confident, happy pup!

Yesterday, Worthy Dog welcomed a small transport, including these two gorgeous puppies—Creamy Coconut (now Tito) and Otter—who were greeted with open arms by their new family and have officially begun their new lives!

The weather was cold, rainy, and uncooperative, so we didn’t get our usual transport day photos, but we do have some adorable at-home snapshots to share.

Another snow day in the DC Metro area means plenty of fun and playtime for our handsome boy, Twix, and WDR alum, Daisy!

Twix’s foster parents took advantage of the long weekend for some well-deserved R&R, and we’re so grateful to new fosters, Sarah and Adam, for stepping up to care for Twix while they’re away. From the moment Twix and Daisy met, they were instant playmates, and he quickly took to both Sarah and Adam. He’s a snuggly, sweet boy who has already worked in plenty of couch cuddles—and he’s a big fan of belly rubs!

Twix is a social, goofy, fun-loving pup who thrives with canine companionship and loves to play. He’s house-trained, crate-trained, and has been making progress with basic commands. He’s also a great travel buddy, riding well in the car and meeting new people and dogs with ease. While his leash skills are decent, he can get excited and pull, so a little more practice will help him improve.

This lovable boy is ready to bring joy and laughter to his forever home! Twix would thrive in an active household with a playful pup companion to keep him company.

Could he be the perfect fit for your family?

After a few hours, she began to relax and sniff her new buddies. Now she runs and plays like she’s been part of the pack forever!

We checked in with Ashley for a first-week update:

"Lizzy is such a joy to foster. She’s a happy girl and a quick learner! She’s already picked up on our nightly routine, so I’d say she’s adjusting well. She LOVES the kids and will make a fantastic family dog. I think she’d thrive in a home with either a pup playmate or children—she’s an active girl who loves to be outside and explore. Over the past week, she’s become more comfortable going into her kennel and no longer barks for long. I’ve checked in on our cameras, and after about 10 minutes, she settles down.

While she enjoys playing with her dog buddies, Lizzy is very people-focused. She’s a busybody who always wants to be where her humans are. She’s a little shy at first but warms up quickly, greets visitors with a wagging tail, and loves to snuggle with the kids.

We’re working on her leash skills—she’s eager to explore and wants to chase birds and squirrels. We’re also reinforcing basic manners, like keeping her paws off the dinner table and resisting the temptation of the boys’ plates when they’re not looking!”

ADOPTION UPADATE!

Paulie, now Bandit, was surrendered to the rescue by his elderly owner as the second of four siblings she plans to rehome. Bandit and his littermates lived a very sheltered life with little exposure to the outside world or regular potty breaks, so he had some learning to do and was initially timid around new people and experiences. In his foster home, we learned that once he settled in and got comfortable, he quickly blossomed into an affectionate, playful pup who loves being part of a pack.

Just before the holidays, Bandit found his forever home with a loving family. His new life includes a mom and dad who both work from home, two boys to play with, and a Boxer named Ollie—his new best friend.

We checked in with his new mom, Christina, for an update:

**"Bandit has really started to come out of his shell, and he and Ollie have been having a blast chasing each other around the house. We still use the crate at night just in case, but he’s now fully potty trained and feels completely at home. He’s still a bit shy around new people, so the holiday gatherings were a little overwhelming for him, but we’re hoping that with more socialization, he’ll continue to grow more comfortable. We’ve lovingly nicknamed him ‘Bandit’ because he loves to steal socks and dirty tissues 🤣—but we adore our little thief!"**

Success!

Oliver has been in his foster home for almost a month now, living with his foster mom, Lou, her husband, Scotty, and their two German Shepherds, Knox and Dozer. He settled in quickly and had an easy introduction to his new pack. Knox has become his playful buddy, and they love to romp and play in the yard. Oliver has also discovered his love for toys and can entertain himself with his new treasures. Now that he knows the love and security of home, his joyful and curious spirit has really come out.

Oliver has shown excellent house manners and is fully housebroken—he hasn’t had a single accident in his foster home. He’s also now crate trained and has learned to see it as a safe, cozy space. Lou crates him for a few hours during the day when they’re both out, as he’s still a young dog with a knack for mischief. At night, he’s earned free-roam privileges and sleeps peacefully with the pack.

We checked in with his foster mom, Lou, for an update:

“Oliver is the sweetest boy and absolutely loves to cuddle. He’s so happy to be indoors, warm, and part of a family. Surprisingly, for such a young dog, his energy level is low to moderate. He rarely barks but does whine like a little puppy, which is both adorable and funny. Overall, he’s a gentle, loving soul who is soaking up all the affection and comfort he’s been missing. He adores the couch, warm blankets, and snuggling with either me or Scotty whenever we sit down. He’s also a big fan of butt scratches!

Oliver’s introduction to my boys was one of the easiest I’ve ever done. He’s naturally submissive and happy to follow their lead. All three dogs sit calmly while we prepare their food, and there hasn’t been a single disagreement between them. Oliver shows no food aggression—remarkable, considering how skinny he was and everything he’s been through.

I took him to the vet and pet store, and he did great. At PetSmart, another dog was barking and acting out, but Oliver simply ignored him. He also met a 4-year-old little girl while we were looking at the fish, and he adored her. He let her pet him and never tried to jump or nibble. When she left, she turned around, waved, and said, "Bye, Oliver"—it was the sweetest moment. He did get a little anxious outside in the parking lot but it was during lunch rush hour with all the loud traffic. In the car, he was great, even when fire trucks and ambulances passed us.

Everyone who meets him says Oliver is a wonderful dog. He’s absolutely adorable, just perfect, and is turning into a confident, happy pup.”

Meet Kansas, a beautiful Rough Collie who is looking for her true forever home. Originally purchased from a breeder, she was rehomed when her first family's older dog struggled to accept a puppy. We checked in with her foster mom, Cindy, for an early update:

"Kansas has a very sweet personality, but she’s still adjusting and learning to trust. She enjoys playtime and treats but hasn’t yet started actively seeking affection—I believe that will come with a little more time. She meets new dogs and people wonderfully on a leash and is very well-behaved on outings. She’s great in the car and loves to go on hikes.

She’s a young, active dog who loves to play, though my older dogs aren’t always up for it, and she can be a bit of an enthusiastic little sister at times. This may settle as she continues to adjust. During the day, she’s energetic, but she does wind down at night. She’s fully housetrained and has no destructive tendencies, so I leave my door open at night, allowing her to roam freely with the other dogs."

More to come as this pretty pup settles in.

Jelly Bean....a wolf in Chi clothing? 😂

We checked in with Jelly Bean's foster mom, Kristin, for an udpate.

“JB is doing great. She's coming out of her shell more each day and is an absolute cuddle bug. She loves to sit next to you on the couch or in bed and snuggle. She's a blanket maniac....actually a "fuzzy thing" maniac. She loves her blankie and carries it with her, dragging it out from her crate around the house whenever possible. She is also a fan of fuzzy shoes. She doesn't do anything to them. She just likes to drag them into her crate when no one is around. If we go out, even for a minute, we come back to find either my fuzzy boots or dad's slippers (or both) safely tucked into the crate next to her. Oh..and she loves her crate. We don't close the crate when we go to work but she still likes to stay inside snuggled up with a pile of blankets.

She's been really good when left alone with our other two dogs. No issues. She's not a big fan of dog play but she loves to play "crazy dog" with her people. Basically, she runs at you, then flips over on her belly or runs around in circles so you can hand wrestle with her and give her belly scratches. It's her favorite thing. A couple of times she's tried to engage on of the older dogs in a little play but didn't happen. She like toys. She'll pick up a toy, swing it around, set it down, and do it again...but mostly she just likes to carry her blanket around.

JB is a full-on top-level home security system. If a person, dog, or squirrel gets too close to her house, she will let everyone know. She also has a bit of a singing voice and will let out a howl at sirens or when her foster dad eggs her on. 🙂 She is pretty much housebroken although she has to be encouraged to go outside on cold days. On nice days she loves to explore in the yard and chase the squirrels. She does ok on the leash but she gets cold quickly. She's been a joy to have in the house and anyone that has a bit of energy to play with this young pup but also likes to snuggle will love this little girl.”

Every dog is a worthy dog.

Worthy Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping dogs in distress, especially those living on chains, in pens, or in neglectful and abusive situations. Our mission is to provide a better life for these dogs through rescue and rehabilitation, outreach and education in the communities we serve, and addressing the root causes of animal overpopulation. We take a comprehensive approach to improving animal welfare because every dog we can keep in its home, make healthy, or prevent from having puppies is another dog saved.
