I had a lengthy post written about how overwhelming and draining and emotional these past seven weeks have been, and how badly we need your help this Giving Tuesday. But then I realized, it may be easier and a whole lot less boring just to show you what our world looks like now. THIS is our “new normal.” More animals, more work, less rescue partners, less donations than we’ve ever experienced in the history of our organization. Seven days a week, 14-16 hour days are our new normal. It’s a blessing to be in a position to work and save lives, but it’s a physical, emotional, financial drain like we’ve never experienced. When the world started to close down around us, Kelly, Bethany and I, along with our epically dedicated FCRC and F&C crews, made the commitment that we would work tirelessly to not drop the ball on the lives that our rescue partners could no longer support. We feel a tremendous sense of obligation to the animals to carry the full load on our shoulders until our partners are able to resume operations. Like the rest of the world, we’re aching to get back to our “real normal” … but until that day comes, I would beg those of you who can donate to our work, please do so. We can’t continue operating at this pace without your support. The animals need us as much as we need you.

Felines & Canines needs your support! ❤️

Essential. This is how animal shelters are categorized in this new world of ours. Some shelters have emptied out and closed entirely, others are open part-time with modified programs, trying to make the best of a terrible situation. As we watched the world closing down around us - the lump in my throat became unbearable realizing how many thousands upon thousands of animals were suddenly left abandoned and without hope. Our crew had some very serious, very blunt conversations about how we collectively wanted to proceed at Felines & Canines and Felines & Canines Rescue Center, and the response across the board was unanimous - we MUST keep working for the animals in the safest, most responsible manner possible. It is absolutely essential for these animals - this is 100% life or death for them.

I am so grateful to have such a dedicated, selfless team who ALWAYS puts the animals first. Not only have we been able to rescue 124 dogs and cats over the past three weeks, but we've been an immediate resource for animals appearing on the streets with extreme medical needs - cue Tuna.

I received a call today that a cat was out in an alley struggling to breathe and appeared to be exceptionally ill. Without hesitation, we were able to bring this beautiful boy, Tuna, immediately to F&C and begin treatment for one of the worst upper respiratory infections I've ever seen. Despite his mouth being completely ulcerated, and his nose blistered and blocked, he welcomed our treatment with such kindness and gratitude, clearly thrilled to be off the streets. My heart absolutely swells knowing that we could be here for Tuna, while simultaneously breaking knowing how many animals are suffering tremendously right this very moment because resources for them are so depleted. For as long as we are legally allowed to continue saving lives, we will do so.

While it is an incredibly challenging time to ask for support, I absolutely must do so for the animals. So many businesses have been terribly affected by the lockdown, and unfortunately, we are not exempt from that. Since the moment we closed our doors to the public - donations stopped. They literally came to a screeching halt. It has been a devastating loss to our organization... one that we can't sustain long term. If you find yourself in a position that you have anything you can spare (that won't impact your ability to care for yourself or your loved ones), I would humbly ask that you consider making a donation to our shelter right now. It is an awful time to ask for your help when we know how many people are struggling to make ends meet, but for those of you who find yourself in a position to give (absolutely any amount you can) - our animals need the support desperately.

This photo was sent to us by Chicago Animal Care and Control yesterday. It's their adoption floor, which is completely empty. The good kind of empty.

As of yesterday they had just 100 dogs and 11 cats in their care. We have been going to CACC for 12 years and we have never seen anything even close to this.

Thank you adopters, thank you foster homes, thank you volunteers, thank you donors. Thank you CACC for being progressive and proactive during this time. Shelter/rescue pets continue to shine and be our silver lining during this very tough time.

We are beaming and we hope you can take a second to bask in that with us.

Our super sweet, super sad little babe Cocoa desperately needs a spotlight placed on her. You can check out her bio below, but her life has been flipped upside down and she is just about as sad as can be here at the shelter. In her kennel she just cries and cries. We would love to find her a lap that she can call her own once again...

Cocoa is such a tender hearted little lady who we absolutely adore. Cocoa has spent her life living on the streets with a homeless veteran. Earlier this month her person was forced to go into hospice care and Cocoa found herself at the shelter. She is so wise, soulful and gentle. When she was out in the play yard with the other dogs, she just looked for a person to crawl into their lap and just observe the world around her. She's so loving and tender... perfectly content just to be with her person and take on life together. Cocoa is around 8 years old, a petite 10lbs, and looks like a terrier mix. She still has plenty of pep in her step and would love a home environment where she can have a person to bond deeply with and a lap that is always open for snuggles. She's such a wise and loving little lady.
