We're sorry! The final 2023-24 ASW meeting (Members Only Pizza Lunch; NO AUCTION) scheduled for Sunday, JUNE 23 at St. John's-Ravenscourt School (SJR) has been cancelled. We'll see everybody in September 2024 when we come back for a new club season.

PU Yang , ASW Member and owner of "OYaquarium", can't make it to tomorrow's meeting (May 26), but he did offer up a VERY generous donation to tomorrow's auction at our meeting. 10:45PM and he dropped off *20* unique Betta sp. for the auction, all as DONATIONS with 100% of proceeds going to the club! WOW! With how popular his bettas were at the February and March auctions, how could we say no!? So, Pu, Thank You! Hope we see you at the June event!

23/05/2024

Oh, shoot! We were too slow - Fort Whyte Alive is all booked up for June - no members only BBQ for us. Anyone elese have some ideas? :P

20/05/2024

How many of you would be interested in attending a "ASW Members Only" 2024-Season Wrap-Up Barbecue at Fort Whyte Alive in June?

We've done this many times in the past, and believe it or not, we even wrap up the event by having our monthly auction (indoors!) after some hot dogs, hamburgers, and non-alcoholic beverages.

We were a bit slow to contact the venue this year, but our Communications Chair has reached out and we expect to have information and a tentative date by next week's meeting. Let us know what you think!

19/05/2024

The MAY meeting was never scheduled for today (3rd Sunday of the month) due to Victoria Day long weekend. Historical attendance has been abysmal on May Long. Please bookmark https://www.facebook.com/AquariumSocietyWinnipeg/events/ and in each event, mark yourself as "interested" or "going" to get updates and reminders from Facebook. The May meeting is indeed NEXT WEEKEND - May 26. Also, is there any interest in a June Year-End Wrap-Up (Members Only) Barbecue if we can get one planned? Maybe at Fort Whyte Alive or similar? Let's talk at next week's meeting!

How many of you are keeping GOODEIDS? Goodeidae is a family of teleost fish endemic to Mexico and some areas of the United States. Many species are known as splitfins. This family contains about 50 species within 18 genera. They definitely had their heyday at our club auctions prior to the years of the pandemic. Kyle Neufeld (our HAP Chair) is one of our most knowledgeable keepers of these fish and has achieved BAP (breeder award program) success with multiple species.

We received a message a month or so ago which we intended to pass along to our membership, but it kind of fell off our radar.

The Canadian chapter of the Goodeid Working Group, a non-profit volunteer organization committed to the conservation of Goodeids, is conducting a census of which species are currently kept by hobbyists in Canada, in order to better assess which species/populations may require greater attention for hobbyist breeding efforts

We are told that there are approximately 30 members of the 'GWG' in Canada but they're primarily in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, so the GWG coordinators are particularly interested in expanding awareness of Goodeids and their breeder ranks in Manitoba.

If this organization is something you would be interested in learning more about, please reach out to 'Marcus' at [email protected] .

FYI: In regard to recent member inquiries re SERVICE ANIMALS ... St. John's-Ravenscourt School (SJR) has advised us the following:

Accredited support animals are welcome on campus. We ask that they are leashed or tethered (as long as this does not interfere with the animals duties).

For any further questions on this topic, we ask that we receive your questions no later than end-of-day on the Wednesday prior to the meeting date (Sunday) so we have time to open a dialogue with the administrator at St. John's-Ravenscourt School (SJR).

Thank you!

To those of you attending our meetings at St. John's-Ravenscourt School (SJR):

Mobile-cellular connectivity is less than ideal in that area... HOWEVER... we have confirmed availability of a WiFi network SSID which is available for ASW members to use, but requires a username and password (i.e. protected WiFi).

As per the terms of our agreement with our host venue, we are not allowed to distribute the credentials via email, social media or other communications.

Please see our Membership Chair at the tables where you enter the room to receive the username and password.

And to those who asked, there is no bank machine (ATM) on the campus - please govern yourself accordingly. :)

Come spend your St Patrick's Day (weekend) afternoon with us at our March 2024 meeting.

If you haven't been to St. John's-Ravenscourt School (SJR) meetings before, come discover this bright and roomy space. Our homecoming last month was great, and we're looking forward to making this our home again for a long time.

We'll hold our monthly auction as per usual, and also engage the membership to discuss a possible June Barbecue, possible guest speakers for the April and May events, and to generate ideas for the 2024-25 club season (September 2024 to June 2025).

Please follow the event link below and indicate if you are "going" or "interested". https://www.facebook.com/events/1369337823947643

I just wanted to apologize for getting ahead of myself on the last reel I posted. While we certainly hope to see you at the April 21st meeting, the next meeting is just around the corner! This Sunday, March 17th, is indeed the next meeting!!
See you at 400 South Drive. Doors open at 12pm, meeting starts at 1pm. 🐟🐠🐡🦐🐌

11/03/2024

With the next meeting just six days away (Sunday, March 17) Just a couple of reminders when selling your items in the ASW auction, please...

Label each item you wish to sell with its unique auction code, which is a combination of your Auction ID and the item number of each item. ... For example, ABC-01. If you don't know your member ID (usually your three initials - first/middle/last) please email [email protected] and we'll confirm, for you.

Limit of 20 "Standard" (non-BAP, non-HAP) Items per seller, per monthly auction event.

For HAP and BAP use those special auction forms. "Unlimited" number of HAP and BAP items per seller, to encourage participation.

DO NOT duplicate auction item number across the different forms -continue your numbering across sheets.

No form required for "DON" (donations) items. No need to label with your seller ID nor an item number. Just drop them on the donation table. Our Auction Chair to provide donation labels to be affixed to your items.

If you need help, please show up a few minutes early to the event and one of our board members will help you!

See you all in one hour !

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ RE: AUCTION RULES (REVISED APRIL 2023):

For the benefit of those who haven't been to a meeting in a long time, as well as those who are new around here and haven't been to one of our events, here are some of the procedural changes we implemented to our event auctions as of April 2023.

*** TEN-TABLE SYSTEM ***

Upon arrival at the meeting, sellers should take note of the “ten-table” signs upon all the auction tables. There will be 10 ‘standard’ tables, and sellers should place each of their auction items on the corresponding table, based on the item ID number.

Example: If seller ABC is selling 20 items in the auction, their items ABC-01 and ABC-11 would go onto “Table 01”, because the ID number ENDS in the digit “1”. Similarly, Items from the same seller such as ABC-05 and ABC-15 would go onto “Table 05”.

The only exceptions to this logic would be for HAP, BAP, and DON (Donations) items – which have their own tables (tables 11 to 13) specific to those special item types.

HAP, BAP, and "Standard" items have customized auction forms (revised as of April 2023), and sellers should complete them accordingly.

Due to our web site being under construction at the moment, please send us email to [email protected] and we can provide the current forms as PDF attachments.

*** TOTAL NUMBER OF ITEMS FROM SAME SELLER (ONE EVENT) ***

ASW member-sellers are limited to 20 (twenty) total items in any one monthly auction. All existing item labelling requirements will be enforced and item placement according to the Ten-Table System (see above) will be mandated. Once items are registered (via auction forms) with the Auction Chair, items cannot be withdrawn or delisted from the auction under any circumstances.

Exemptions to 20-Item Limit: Member ABC's HAP and BAP table submissions DO NOT COUNT against their 20-item limit. i.e. if ABC sells 5 BAP items (BAP table) and 5 HAP items (HAP table), while these items do carry their seller initials, they can still sell up to 20 'standard' items on the 10-tables system. The spirit of this exemption is to encourage participation in the HAP and BAP programs.

Since a seller can only earn their BAP or HAP on any one species once in a lifetime, there will be no limit as to the number of UNIQUE (BAP and HAP) submissions from a seller at any one auction event.

(a) Seller's 20 (limited twenty, or less) 'Standard' items would go on the "Standard" Auction Form;
(b) Seller's BAP (unlimited) items would go on the "BAP Auction" form; and
(c) Sellers's HAP (unlimited) items would go on the "HAP Auction" form.

All items within one auction, from one same seller, should use unique auction item IDs - If seller listed 5 BAP items and 5 HAP items, those would be their ABC-01 to ABC-10 items; their standard items should now resume the seller's numbering schema at ABC-11 and counting.

*** AUCTION PRICES AND PAYMENTS ***

All items start with a minimum $1.00 CAD bid, and bidding will proceed whole-dollar incremental amounts. Sellers are allowed to specify a minimum bid on the face of the item prior to listing in the auction. Once listed, items cannot be withdrawn or changed in any way whatsoever.

Regardless of the realized selling price, $1.00 or $99.00, ALL items sold will net 75% of the realized selling price to the member-seller, with the remaining 25% retained by the ASW itself.

Example: $1.00 sold price is $0.75 for the member-seller and $0.25 for the club; $25.00 sold price is $18.75 for the member-seller and $6.25 for the club.

Items listed as “DON” (Donations) will result in 100% of the realized price being retained by the ASW. UNSOLD items can be claimed by the labelled member-seller at the end of the auction; any unclaimed-unsold items will be disposed of at the discretion of the Auction Chair.

MEMBER BUYERS: If you are a member, you should ask for your assigned numbered-paddle upon entry to the event. This will allow you to buy on credit – and if you are selling, to offset your amount owed for purchases, against your 75% proceeds from anything you sold.

VISITOR (NON-MEMBER) BUYERS: Please request a “BLANK” bidding paddle upon arrival at the meeting. You will NOT have credit privileges and must pay for each item you win in CASH, immediately as your runner brings you the item.

SELLERS: If a seller must leave the auction before the end of the auction, their accumulated 75% seller proceeds can be e-transferred to the member upon request, or paid out via cheque - both methods subject to a $5.00 administration fee deducted from the proceeds – but only when pre-approved by the Auction Chair prior to the member-seller leaving the event for the day. We recommend that sellers stay for the entire duration of the auction and then collect their proceeds before leaving for the day!

Upon arrival to all our events, all members should sign-in at Security, then stop at the member services table so we can validate your membership status. Non-Member (Visitor) access is NOT free-of-charge and does cost $5.00 per meeting for any visitors (non-members) over the age of majority. Only members can SELL in the auction, but anyone can BUY. Members will receive their assigned (numbered) bidding paddle at arrival sign-in; non-member visitors (upon paying their $5.00 visitor fee) will receive a white (un-numbered) bidding paddle.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS LONG MESSAGE. See you in 14 days at St. John's-Ravenscourt School (SJR).

Our website http://www.asw.ca/ is currently under construction. We appreciate your patience while we upgrade!

Yes, we are an actual in-person club with actual meetings and events, although some of you who are newer around here may have your doubts. ;)

We got hammered by the pandemic, then by board member attrition (i.e. retirement) and finally by venue issues. Well... we're back at our pre-pandemic venue starting with the February meeting.

With the exception of select meetings, all events are "members only". We try to have a presenter or guest speaker at each event. We also do an auction each month where members (only) can sell livestock and dry goods.

We also have a HAP (reproduce your plants) and BAP (reproduce your livestock) points system in which you can earn points towards formal certificates, plaques, and eventually trophies! Just a few perks of membership.

We are also working with local shops on the idea of a members-only discount plan for ASW members.

All memberships include access to monthly meetings, events, selling at auctions, and voting during elections.

Single Membership covers ONE adult individual (18 years of age or older), during TWELVE rolling month duration. Single Membership Fee - $30

Family Membership covers individuals and family members in ONE household, during TWELVE rolling months. Any BAP or HAP submissions will be entered under designated ‘Head of Household’, which is chosen by the family. During elections, the family will have only ONE vote. Family Membership Fee - $40

Junior Membership covers ONE youth (17 years of age or younger), during TWELVE rolling months duration. Junior Membership Fee - $20

We hope this answers a few of the questions from those who found us since 2020 or so. :) Reply here and we'll let you know the answers to your questions. :)

It's that time again, everybody! The Aquarium Society of Winnipeg (ASW) is going to take all you lonely fish back into to school formation! We know you're hungry, so we hope this post was the bait to get your whiskers wigglin'. There’s no need to play hooky! Let minnow if you're ready to tackle some un(fin)ished business back at 400 South Drive!

Hello, Aquarium Society of Winnipeg (ASW) members, friends, and followers. Our club is facing some tough challenges right now, and we need you more than ever to engage us with empathy.

We are in active negotiations with a host venue in our efforts to secure a venue that can remain sustainable for our events while offering us a more permanent "home". We determined that the venue we "tested" for November 2023 would not meet our needs in the long run.

As our (acting) Chairman (Chris Biggs) has stated in another post, our continuity has been challenged by multiple constraints, including but not limited to: limited selection and availability of a suitable host venue; a dramatic increase in operating costs such as insurance premiums, host venue rental fees, etc.; and the continued attrition (loss of executive members) within our ranks.

As much as your frustration has become palpable (social media comments, emails, etc.), we share some of your feelings and are trying to do our best to get the train back on the tracks. We have been quiet, because unfortunately, we haven't had any "good news" to share in recent weeks.

However, some positive developments have occurred in the last few days, and we hope to have some announcements to make in the next week or two. It remains unlikely that we will have a January event, but we are trying to get back on schedule for February. If all goes well, we think that you folks are going to look at this as a homecoming, of sorts! Stay tuned!

P.S. If any paid members have concerns specific to their membership, paid dues, and the like, feel free to inbox us - any other concerns, questions or comments, please post publicly on our page or in our discussion group.

Thank you for your interest, and we will be back soon!

Are you still shopping for a gift for that "fishy" friend/family member? With just one week left, don't forget to 'buy local' and support our diverse local hobby scene.

From sole entrepreneur, to corporate chains, there's something for everyone! Find the shops closest to you using the linked map.

Credit to Robert W. Brown (ASW Communications Chair) for creating this handy dandy tool a few years ago. Still as useful today as it was back then!

On Friday, October 13, we shared our great news - that we found a new venue. A venue that is willing to let us try one meeting on a "no obligations" basis.

We need you folks to come out to the meeting on Sunday, November 19, and let us know how you like the new venue. Is there enough parking? Are there enough seats? The members make the ASW what it is, and we need you to make your opinion count!

And now, WHERE is the meeting, is the question you folks keep asking us. The Novembver meeting will happen at Prendergast Centre Association Inc. (formerly Prendergast School). This former school has since the 1980s been utilized as a seniors centre and childcare facility.

So, set your GPS to "906 Cottonwood Road" (in Windsor Park) and come see us on Sunday, November 19, 2023. https://www.google.com/maps?q=N49.86051,+W97.07971

Good News! We have a new venue for our meetings! The host organization is going to let us try it for one meeting and see what you members think about it! So come on out, and let us know what you think!

The venue is in a community-type building located near the intersection of Fermor Ave. and Lakewood Blvd. in the "Windsor Park" area of Winnipeg.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the usual time. Meeting agenda and more details to come in the next few days. :) So excited!

Hello, friends and followers.

We regret to inform all of you that there will again be no club meeting this month - October 2023 (previously scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2023).

At this time, we are still seeking an alternative venue to the facility that hosted us last year. We thank Riverview Community Centre for their hospitality during our 2022-23 club season.

If any of our members can recommend somewhere else that can accommodate us once every 4 weeks, preferably on the third SUNDAY of each month, please contact the executive at [email protected] to share your suggestions with us.

When giving your host venue suggestions, please consider access requirements for our members with mobility impairments, as well as ample parking for the members arriving in their personal vehicles.

Please note that all paid memberships will be "extended" by the number of forgone meetings (due to lack of a venue). So as of right now, that would be +2 months (missed Sep 2023 and Oct 2023 meetings).

FYI, there will be no September 2023 monthly meeting of the ASW. As of this time, we have not renewed our previous year...

FYI, there will be no September 2023 monthly meeting of the ASW. As of this time, we have not renewed our previous year's venue (Riverview Community Centre). Venue renewal and OCTOBER meeting date and location to be determined. Stay tuned.

Happy Father's Day 2023 to all of the "Fish Daddies" out there in Manitoba (and beyond). We look forward to seeing you in THREE HOURS (1pm today) for our final event of the 2022-23 club season!

June 2023 Club Meeting Club Meeting at Riverview Community Centre is the place. Please don't forget to use the new auction forms (rev. June 2023) that were published and linked in our recent email distribution.

31/05/2023

As we wind down the 2022-23 club year, our final event for the season will be on Father's Day - Sunday, June 18, 2023. Come join us at the Riverview Community Centre for one big auction to clean out your fish rooms before we part ways for the summer. We're going to miss you guys, but we'll see you in September. And on the subject of auctions, we have made some enhancements to the auction forms that members must complete when selling items in the monthly auctions.

AUCTION PROCEDURE UPDATES: JUNE 2023

Effective June 2023, members will be limited to 20 (twenty) 'standard' items in any one monthly auction event. HAP and BAP table submissions are unlimited and DO NOT COUNT against their 20 'standard' item limit. The spirit of this exemption is to encourage participation in the HAP and BAP programs.

For greater clarity on the above:

(a) Seller's Standard (up to limit of 20) items would go on the "Standard" Auction Form;
https://mcusercontent.com/48ba8e5748745fcaff1a47467/files/2a5f2d2e-69de-0ba2-3879-75206114a4f2/ASW_Auction_Form_STANDARD_Rev_June_2023_.pdf

(b) Seller's BAP (unlimited) items would go on the NEW "BAP Auction" form; and
https://mcusercontent.com/48ba8e5748745fcaff1a47467/files/a33c3001-c308-9e02-084f-06b8a35c3dcc/ASW_Auction_Form_BAP_Rev_June_2023_.pdf

(c) Sellers's HAP (unlimited) items would go on the NEW "HAP Auction" form.
https://mcusercontent.com/48ba8e5748745fcaff1a47467/files/76be0d82-e780-f955-32d3-62b5ce1413cc/ASW_Auction_Form_HAP_Rev_June_2023_.pdf

All items within one auction, from one same seller, should use unique auction item IDs - If seller listed 5 BAP items and 5 HAP items, those would be their ABC-01 to ABC-10 items; their standard items should now resume the seller's numbering schema at ABC-11 and counting.

To further support the above changes, the item auction forms have been split from one original form into three forms: Standard, HAP, and BAP. Please, DO NOT duplicate auction item # across the different forms -continue your numbering across sheets.

The new forms can be downloaded from the file links above, and will soon be posted on our website at http://www.asw.ca/ .

Standard, HAP, and BAP items will still continue to net 75% of the realized selling price to the member-seller, and 25% goes back to the club to support our activities and initiatives.

No auction form is required for "DON" (donations) items. Auction Chair to provide donation labels to affix to your items. No seller ID is required on the item -just write "DON" and place items on the DONATIONS table. 100% of the realized selling price goes to support the club's funding.

If you have any questions or concerns about these improvements, please reply to this email or talk to us on our "Discussion Group" on Facebook.

Hello Aquarium Society of Winnipeg (ASW) friends and followers.

For your information, Aquarium Society of Winnipeg (ASW) monthly meetings are cancelled until further notice. We will send out email blasts and social media posts when we resume normal event schedules.

As the Aquarium Society of Winnipeg (ASW) is not having any monthly meetings or incurring any expenses (no room rentals, no speaker costs, etc.) All current status paid memberships will be extended for one (1) year. e.g. If your membership was to expire in May 2020, it will now expire in May 2021.

A huge THANK YOU to all of those who are providing services and support to help our Manitoba communities get through these tough days: healthcare workers, first responders, grocery attendants and all of the others who are deemed "essential service".

Stay safe everyone.

Who (What?) is the ASW?

The Aquarium Society of Winnipeg (ASW) is an organization of hobbyists dedicated to the maintenance, reproduction, preservation, and distribution of aquatic life, with particular emphasis on the social aspects of the aquarium hobby.
