The US greenhouse market stands as a fertile ground for investors seeking a combination of financial returns and environmental stewardship

The convergence of consumer preferences, technological advancements, and government support creates a compelling investment landscape.

As the demand for locally sourced, sustainable produce continues to rise, investing in greenhouse operations not only reaps financial rewards but also contributes to a more resilient, eco-friendly, and socially responsible agricultural future.

As investors navigate the evolving landscape, seizing the opportunity in the US greenhouse market may prove to be a wise and rewarding decision.

When starting a farm, there are many choices to be made, but one of the most important is which type of farm to start.

Each farm model comes with its own set of pros and cons, especially concerning startup costs, operation costs, and climate control.

Here are 5 reasons why you might want to start a greenhouse farm:

🌿1. Lower CapEx than other CEA facilities
🌿2. Lower OpEx
🌿3. Greater resilience with fewer points of failure
🌿4. Lower CO2 footprint
🌿5. Easier to integrate and optimize renewable energy sources

Agritecture’s consulting team 👨‍🌾 is a big fan of greenhouses, which have a long history of commercial and private success.

Trying to figure out how much the cost of doing business will increase year over year is impossible.

That said, it’s critical to account for some margin of cost increase. According to an analysis done by the American Farm Bureau Federation, costs for different aspects of commodity production have increased anywhere from 3 - 59% cumulatively over the last 10 years.

We know that the CEA industry suffered greatly in 2022 and 2023 due to increased energy and fertilizer costs, but other costs are also increasing and it can be hard to keep tabs on how much.

I would like to suggest that all operations ask their accounting team to conduct a analysis of past expenses to determine previous cost increases for your operation and use that information to project cost increases in the future. (Agritecture Designer, our farm planning software, includes annual increases in both opex and crop pricing to make sure your farming proformas are as accurate as possible before you launch your farm.)

If our input costs are going to keep rising, then one solution is to try and do with less. Can we be creative and look for ways to use fewer resources and maintain our current level and quality of production?

AmplifiedAg, Inc. has been at the forefront of CEA innovation since its beginnings in 2015. Their modular farm technology and crop monitoring software have revolutionized agricultural production possibilities, especially for independent farmers in areas where environmental factors create significant challenges for growth, like limited growing seasons or high salinity.

In two recent partnerships, AmplifiedAg has implemented its vertical farming technology beyond independent farms to facilitate modular farm infrastructure for other enterprise-scale operators, proving to be impactful on numerous levels.

⭐ South Carolina Department of Corrections and South Carolina Department of Agriculture

This 8-module farm will operate at a commercially relevant scale and present an opportunity for professional growth to the inmates of South Carolina’s Camille Griffin Graham Correctional Institution with support from Impact Justice.

⭐ Senn Brothers Produce

Senn Brothers Produce aims to build its own vertical farm to better serve the needs of its consumers and push the concept of indoor-grown produce forward on a larger platform. This newfound flexibility enables a more sound supply chain process, from minimizing loss during modular propagation to lowering food waste resulting from expiration and mishandling.

Once appearing to be a tool of the independent operator, AmplifiedAg has shown the vast potential for the value of vertical farming to expand in scale and extend across institutional lines.

Establishing your urban farm or farming company, whether it be a greenhouse operation, vertical farming business, or shipping container farm involves time-consuming steps. These new indoor farming techniques, particularly beneficial in urban areas and areas with limited arable land, employ advanced techniques for crop production. Achieving a sustainable financial model for such ventures requires meticulous effort and consideration of factors like resource management, technological integration, and strategic planning.

In this article, we are sharing five steps to serve as essential guides for those venturing into controlled environment agriculture with an interest in opening their own indoor farm.

11/16/2023

It is expected that when elements of lighting are adjusted, there will be an impact on plant growth. But we also need to remember that other things we do at our operations will also impact our plants.

The image below is an amazing example of this. This is a screenshot from a video that was released as part of a study called "Green leaf volatile sensory transduction in Arabidopsis." The video shows the increase in Ca2+ accumulation in Arabidopsis leaves, signaling a change in leaf surface potential and a defensive gene expression.

This shows that plants communicate with each other through the release of VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

This is important to consider because when harvesting microgreens or leafy greens, the release of VOCs could be more impactful as it could affect crop quality - many plant defense mechanisms result in the release of chemicals that cause bitterness. For example, if your harvesting area is adjacent to your production area, the release of VOCs could impact the next batch to be harvested.

If you want to avoid or minimize this potential issue (or test for an impact), here are some things that you can do.

🌿 Physically separate your harvest and production areas so that there is minimal airflow between the two areas.

🌿 Exhaust air from your harvest area directly out of your facility.

🌿 Turn off lights and lower temperatures of product that will be harvested at least an hour before moving into the harvest area. Doing this will close stomata prior to harvest, which will minimize the intake of VOCs and also reduce the chance of produce wilt.

While the federal government continues to flounder, cities are taking the lead in urban agriculture.

The latest city to release a piece of good news is none other than New York City! Last month, the Mayor’s Office of Urban Agriculture (MOUA) released its first inaugural NYC Urban Agriculture Report.

New York City’s MOUA is a leading example of how cities can build the organizational capacity to foster a thriving urban agriculture ecosystem. It bridges together the wide breadth of urban ag, food systems, policy, and climate justice stakeholders seeking to build an equitable and resilient food system. As New York City sets an example, the report underscores the vital role of city leadership, effective communication, and targeted initiatives in fostering positive change within the urban agriculture realm, showcasing the potential for cities to lead the charge toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Cities must prioritize urban agriculture.

A New Chapter in Our Story

Leading urban agriculture companies Agritecture and Blue Planet Consulting are proud to announce their merger. The new entity, Agritecture LLC, will be better suited to pioneer the optimization of food cultivation in urban environments.

The Agritecture platform was founded in 2011, beginning as a blog curated by the founder, Henry Gordon-Smith. The platform focuses on urban agriculture design, aiming to juxtapose the present and future of the sector, inspiring new entrants to the movement and guiding them towards success. In 2014, Agritecture launched its first design workshop, bringing interdisciplinary professionals together in person to collaborate and co-learn through a design sprint. Now in 2017, there have been nine Agritecture Design Workshops in nine different cities.

Blue Planet Consulting was co-founded in 2014 by Henry Gordon-Smith and by angel investor Jeffrey Tucker. Since inception, Blue Planet has serviced over 30 clients on their various urban agriculture projects. Blue Planet’s primary consulting service has been feasibility studies for indoor vertical farms and greenhouses, with notable past projects including Farm. One, Square Roots, and Project Farmhouse.

“This merger reinforces our commitment to a creative and practical approach to urban agriculture,” explains Gordon-Smith, “It adds value to our clients by enhancing our ability to consider project feasibility from both perspectives.”
