Excellent words.

What does it really mean to train ‘𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞?’

This topic was brought up during our last mentorship call inside the 𝘉𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱, and our good friend, Nate Horner couldn’t have summed this topic up any better:

“I have a sign in my barn that says: '𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞.’

It reminds me that, when you train for the horse, you can’t focus on where you think you 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 be — you have to focus on what that horse needs from you 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲.

A lot of times, we look at horses to give us something — like that dopamine rush from a horse understanding our cues. But, we can’t look at it that way. I’ve had to get to the place where I think “what am I offering to the horse to make it a good deal for 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦?”

When you’re not selfishly looking for a result, it changes your mindset to be truly ‘for the horse.’”

It’s FIESTA WEEK! 🎉🎉 That’s right, in just a few days, we’ll be coming together for some fantastic fun at Fiesta! 🌟 Remember, Fiesta is about more than just roping—it’s all about family and community. So, don’t forget to bring your kids and get them involved in the fun event, which gives them a chance to learn and appreciate the sport. From ground roping to mounted heels, these events are a wonderful way to pass along the tradition and give them some fun too! 🐴

Scott DePaolo Horsemanship

Scott has worked in the horse industry in a variety of roles since 1982. He has managed and operated Butte Creek Scout Ranch for the Boy Scouts of America for over 25 years. Butte Creek is a working ranch that specializes in western trail rides and extended pack trips for all ages both for the Boy Scouts of America and their families.

​Scott has a deep belief in the positive effects of experiential learning and that horses can be used to build character and teach positive personality characteristics. He believes that horses make the teaching of many key personal character traits much more natural and that good horsemanship leads to good "humanmanship" (A word from Scott's personal dictionary).

Scott DePaolo is a certified clinician of CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association). He is also certified as a pack and trail clinic instructor, Western and English instructor, EFM instructor, CHA site certifier, and is a Certified Equine Specialist with the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association. Since the early 2000's, Scott has worked on an equine assisted psychotherapy team using horses to help heal troubled youth and recovering adults.
