Ranshaw Ranch Horse Rescue

Ranshaw Ranch Horse Rescue We are a non-profit horse rescue in the heart of Chester Virginia. We seek after horses in need of rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming.

We cannot save them all but we are determined to save "the one". Ranshaw Ranch is the non-profit organization for Shoofly Farm Virginia, a farm located in the heart of Chester Virginia, and active in animal rescue. After Shoofly started rescuing horses, pigs, cats, and other animals and became an animal sanctuary we quickly realized that the demands for animal rescue, especially horses were enormo

us! With very little help out there, Shoofly Farm could not continue to swallow the entire cost if we wanted to expand our rescue efforts. Ranshaw Ranch was formed as a 501c3 (status pending) to help shoulder the financial burden and overall mission of Shoofly which is supplying animals in need with rest, rehabilitation, and forever homes while helping members of our community connect and heal as well as they interact with our very special animals. If you are not already familiar with Shoofly Farm we invite you to check us out, see for yourself what we are all about! www.shooflyfarmvirginia.com

This is Jazzy she is the most in your pocket mare ever and we love her fiercely around here. Today we have a very important vet visit for her. We will update here when we know more but for now we would appreciate prayers, positive energy and good vibes for this sweet girl and that the vets will get some clear answers today and a clear and positive path forward.

Jazzy - RR - QH -18- Mare
Look at the video we were sent of our Jazzy girl by a family who recently visited! We used her as a Holiday Horse for our Holiday Ho-Ho-Hoedown and she was magnificent! She will make someone the BEST beginner horse or lesson horse for small children! She is so incredibly sweet, leads, loads, stands for the farrier, stands for the mount / dismount, rides in an arena or on the trail. Rides English, western or ba****ck, with a bit, hackamore or simply a halter, they don’t come more broke than miss Jazzabel! We would love nothing more than to keep her here with us and use her in our programs but for her health and comfort she needs to go up north where there are mild summers free of extreme heat and most of all humidity. Because Jazzy has an abnormal epiglottis she can not effectively cool herself when hot as one way horses expel heat from their bodies is by breathing out hot air. Jazzy’s epiglottis acts like a sail on a sailboat and traps a lot of her breath and therefore body heat. She also can overheat with too much exercise so she is a walk-trot horse only! We plan to continue to use her over the winter to ensure we aren’t mistaken with her health prognosis (our vet has never seen an epiglottis like hers, nor have other vets they sent her scope images to) so we are in foreign waters with predicting her future however she has truly blossomed here and is a proven fighter and we feel confident she is meant to be a beautiful addition to someone’s family and receive her well deserved forever home!

Diesel - RR - Spotted Saddle - 8 - Gelding
Diesel has finally gained enough weight for us to start working him. We’ve been doing basic stuff like catching him, haltering him, letting us lift his feet ( not there just yet but making progress) This was Diesels first walk over to the Ranch to use the round pen. He did beautifully on the walk and lunging in the pen. After about 2 weeks of ground work we will put a saddle on Diesel and see how much work he needs under saddle. We are so excited to see Diesel progressing and getting closer to being adoptable!

Missing this great one tonight. It’s been 8 days since we laid Denali to rest and though I showed stoic resolve in the days following because I knew we did the right thing for him each morning I wake up and he’s not here has made my heart a little heavier until today I came across this picture and I just broke down. Denali was the BEST horse. He’d do anything we’d ask, he was a gentle giant and had a quiet strength about him. He was the first horse we saved from slaughter and he was so incredibly worth it. Despite all the vet bills and time consuming care during his time with us I’d rescue him 100 times again. In 2020 over 36k US horses were shipped across our boarders for slaughter. It is a cruel, inhumane and horrifying fate and rescues like us cannot save them all, our facilities, finances and hearts are maxed out and yet we want to, no, feel driven to save them all. Please consider taking the time to copy and paste or click the link below and fill out a form by the ASPCA asking Congress to pass the S.A.F.E. Act ( Saving America’s Forgotten Equines) which would ban shipping horses across our boarders for slaughter. Denali was one of the lucky ones. Not only was he loved by all who knew him, when it was time and the pain was too great instead of being sold to a kill buyer for a few hundred dollars at auction we gave him a humane and honorable death, one deserving of a great one. Help us help more great ones like Denali, spread the word, fill out the form. If you’d like to donate to future rescue efforts please do so in Denalis name by Venmo’ing our non profit or Shoofly or follow the link in our bio ranshawranch.org and click the donate button by PayPal. Thank you!

Diesel - 8yr - Stud - Spotted Saddle
Diesel has been here 70 days and can we just say PROGRESS! Swipe for pics of the day he arrived. We still have a ways to go with his weight and we haven’t even tried a saddle on his back (waiting for his top line to fill in) but he has settled in nicely, is very friendly and the other horses here help him be brave and he now willingly comes up to us in the pasture, no chasing required. Amazing what can be accomplished with time, patience and love!

Diesel - 8 yo- Spotted Saddle - Stud (but not for long 😉) - RR
Diesel has decided his new best friend is Louie and is often so close they are touching. What’s so cute about this is Louie, a fellow slaughter truck rescue, was the same way when he showed up here, he was constantly looking for a friend and quickly annoyed each horse over time except Memphis, another Ranshaw Ranch rescue. There seems to be an understanding between these fellow rescue horses and they are willing to help each other through the healing process, it is such a heart warming and inspiring thing to see.

Jazzy - Approx 22 yo - Quarter Horse - Mare -RR
Jazzy continues to improve! We have made a lot of progress draining the abscess on her neck and her breathing is so much better. You can still hear her but the labored tummy breathing is gone. We still do not know what her future holds. Once she’s healed a bit more the vet will visit again and we will discuss the possible implications of her abnormal epiglottis on her quality of life. As long as she is comfortable we don’t see why Jazzy Girl can’t live another 10 or even 15 years!
She ‘s an in your pocket, broke broke, sweet, lovable 14.2hh girl. She loves to be groomed and will follow you off lead all over (if there is no food to distract her) in fact to take this first picture we had to halter and tie her because she wouldn’t stay back enough to let us get a shot of her. She’d be the perfect beginner horse for a young girl who wants to learn how to ride but make sure her mount looks good doing it because Jazzy will stand there all day as long as she’s getting attention from a human. How we love our Jazz-ebel, look out she’ll capture your heart and convince you to keep her 😉

Diesel and Louie SHARING a bowl of grain. There was no nipping, kicking, or biting just a silent understanding between two rescues that companionship is more nourishing to the soul then any amount of food. Diesel is really starting to show us his true self. He is a very gentle boy, just like our Louie 🥰

Diesel - Spotted Saddle - Stud -RR
He is hardly “untamed”. Diesel here just gets sweeter by the day. This video showcases just how friendly and interested Diesel truly is (excuse my fat finger 🙄) He is so gentle and is it just us or does he look like he’s already put a little weight on? We are so very thrilled with his progress!

Jazzy - 20 ish year old Mare - RR
Vet came back out today and performed a scope. Jazzy does NOT have an obstruction in her nasal passage, the scope revealed she has an enlarged and abnormal epiglottis. This is some tissue that acts as a flap at the back of her throat between her airway and esophagus. It is hard to tell why it is this way, it is still a guessing game. So we will continue steroid and antibiotic treatments for another 5 days or so in hopes that it is simply severe inflammation from a chronic infection that was not treated properly. It is a long shot but we are willing to try as long as she is comfortable because she has already improved since last Wednesday when the Vet first treated her. The Vet also looked at the mass on the exterior of her neck and found it to be a benign cyst and so Jazzy now has a drain in it and we will be flushing it 3 times a day to help break the dead tissue and puss up enough to reduce the size of the cyst. This first picture is after a rain, she is such a deep rich black and is so striking, even if she isn't looking her best right now. The other one I took because this is Jazzy, if you come to their paddock she will stop whatever she is doing and come just stand near you and wait for scratches. She loves them just behind her ears and on her pole. Eventually, she starts turning her body to you to indicate where else she is in need of a good scratch or pat. She is a people horse, she could care less (much to Diesel's disappointment) about other horses, she just wants human companionship and affection. She is such a calm and sweet girl, we are hopeful she can recover and make some little beginner rider happy, she truly is a gem. If she does not improve over the next 5 days we will help Jazzy earn her final rest as we do not want her to suffer or be uncomfortable just because we love her and hate goodbyes, it is always about doing what is best for the horse. Please pray for Jazzy's healing, send good vibes or consider sending donations on her behalf to help pay for her growing vet bills. You can Venmo us at Ranshawranch or donate through our website at http://ranshawranch.org/ every little bit helps and is appreciated. Label your donation Jazzy girl!

Diesel -Spotted Saddle- RR
Isn’t it amazing what clean water, green grass, proper nutrition and a bath can do for a horse! Diesel continues to delight us with his progress. We were told he was believed to be unhandled, and that first night after transporting him to he seemed skittish and difficult to handle. However he hasn’t even been here a week yet and he lets us catch and lead him like any other well behaved horse. He is so very willing to trust, anytime he’s unsure we just give him some time and gentle encouragement and he decides he’ll try it and just like that his confidence in us AND himself builds. It’s looking more and more like Diesel is the epitome of a “diamond in the rough”!

We almost lost Jazzy yesterday. With a dangerously high heat index she was struggling to breathe and her temp got up to 105.7. Horses cool themselves by sweating and breathing out hot air, she wasn’t able to blow out enough hot air and no amount of hosing her down was helping lower her temperature. The vet came out and discovered Jaz does not have heaves, she has an obstruction in her sinus and nasal passages. Whether it is edema and inflammation from an infection or a mass we don’t know. The vet gave her steroids and antibiotics on a whim and prayer last night and said if she improves a little by morning we could be cautiously optimistic but if there was no improvement he would be out to help give her a peaceful passing. We sponged her down with alcohol and water to keep her cool and just prayed, it was a long night but Jazzy girl pulled through. Today was even hotter and we knew we had to come up with something to keep her cool so we converted a garage bay into a stall and brought in lots of fans and a window ac unit. It seems to have helped and we’ve gotten her through another day. She is nowhere near out of the woods and Diesel refuses to leave her side. These two show the strength and gentle spirit of horses. Consider donating, Venmo us search Ranshawranch or visit our website, Ranshawranch.org . Label your donation “Jazzy and Diesel” If you can’t donate please share and help us find people who can. Thank you!

-RR-
Memphis is a 16-18 year old TWH/ Saddlebred cross. He is going to make someone a fantastic horse, he’s got a smooth ride and he is so very smart and willing! These two clips show us trying to teach Memphis to stand to be mounted, you’ll see in the first clip the second the mounting block is dropped he’s gone so we ask him to move his feet to show him that the wrong choice equals work to help him understand the right choice which is standing for his rider. The second clip is just 15 minutes later, you can see Memphis thinking and catching himself when he moves off from the rider and self correct, this is huge! Today Memphis stood to be mounted perfectly still twice before a short trail ride. We are so pleased with his progress! We will update with more video of him this week so keep checking in with us!

****PLEASE READ FIRST*****
We like R's around here as you can tell from our name and our motto. When we say a horse has achieved "Triple R" status it means they have successfully been rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed. We will update on this page what stage the horse is currently in by indicating at the top of the post if it is R, RR, or RRR. A horse in the single R stage we are working at raising funds to rescue the horse or transport the already rescued horse. A double R indicates they are safe with us and entering their rehab, this could just be that they need rest and extra food (a lot of these rescues come to us underweight) they may have injuries that need time to heal or they may need some training. A triple R horse is ready to be adopted out to their forever home. *PLEASE NOTE we take adopting these horses out very seriously, the last thing we want for them is to end up in the kill pens or on the slaughter trucks where we found them! Our adoption is a process and the purchase contract states that the new owner can not sell the horse, if they are ever in a position to not take care of the horse then the horse needs to be surrendered back to Ranshaw Ranch. If you are not ready for this type of commitment then these horses are NOT for you! We will use this page to keep everyone updated on the status of our horses and will always strive to give as much information, video, and pictures as possible of their progress. If you are interested in a horse please message the page and we will get back to you or you can call or text 804-840-1229. If you are not able to adopt or supply donations please consider helping us find these horses their forever families by sharing our page and posts! Also please be aware that negative commentary on a horse will only hurt the horse, we are experienced and trained horse owners but we certainly don't know everything nor will we claim to know it all, however, we will always strive to give these rescues the absolute best care possible assisted by our vet and other training experts. So please be kind in your commentary and not critical or confrontational, we all want the same thing, for these horses to have the life they so need and deserve!

Time-sensitive! We have until Tuesday, August 10th!!

Meet Jazzy! She is our first official horse rescue operating under Ranshaw Ranch! Our organization has already sponsored Jazzy's removal from the slaughter pen but we need help raising funds to ship her to our facility where she can enter the next phase of our triple R program, the re-hab phase! We are in need of 55 donors to donate just $10 to help in Jazzy's rescue. Just $10 helps you be a part of Ranshaw Ranch's first official horse rescue but more importantly, it helps you give life and hope to a horse who had none. Take part in Jazzy's happy ending, you can donate at our website http://ranshawranch.org/ or Venmo us , our icon is our logo. Label your donation "Jazzy Girl"

If you can not donate please please share our page and this post, help us find and build a community for these horses!

These were the first slaughter-bound horses we rescued. They currently are receiving excellent care and lots of love at Shoofly Farm Virginia. Our goal as a newly formed non-profit is to continue and expand Shoofly Farm's horse rescue efforts, we may not be able to save all of them but we can always try to save "the one".
