These pet's need our help legally NOW and will need our help later to find the best possible homes. Those who understand that this is not a bargain way to get an expensive breed. The medical expense and training time that can come with adopting a pet from such horrendous conditions is something you need to consider carefully before undertaking. They will likely have some issues and you need to be committed to resolving them with time, money, and lots of love.

The language still used today when referring to dogs and training is still quite archaic and often times indicates an almost slave-master relationship. But what if we encouraged choices?

This is a really insightful article both in regard to dog social behavior and the larger theme of our responsibility to give our dogs a varied and enriched life.

VSPDT Laura Brody discusses the topic of dog socialization and why modern domesticated dogs are showing more signs of dog-dog aggression than ever before.

Dogs do not come totally trained, they do take work and effort. Crate training is a very important tool for the perfect pet. Some dogs do not understand the crate and it takes time and patience. Please do not give up. If you need help, ask someone with experience. :-).

Lots of great shares about keeping your pet safe on the 4th but none so far addressing how to treat your fearful dog... DO NOT "COMFORT" YOUR DOG WITH WORDS OR PETTING! I know this sounds unkind but by telling them "it's alright, it's ok" and cuddling you are also telling them that being fearful is the correct reaction and you're reinforcing their fear. Stay kind, calm, and in control so your in cool demeanor let's them know all is well and you have them covered. Ignore the fear and distract them with normal routines and fun, relaxing outlets for their stress (like an awesome and long lasting chew!)

Shared by a fellow trainer out in Valpo- good article! "correcting" and inflicting pain are 2 different things. I am not anti-correction as in the right place and right amount it's just another tool- but a correction can mildly startle, and/ or be slightly unpleasant (like you tasting something you don't care for. Pain shuts down the brain and no one claiming to "train" a dog should ever be after that!

by Kelly Cottrell I used to spend a good amount of time debating method choices in dog training on social media. I was very impassioned. I viewed punitive collars and training techniques as abusive and unethical. And I never missed an opportunity to “speak” for the dogs who were subjected to these c…

Met Miss Bliss yesterday, an ABRA rescue girl who now is being loved by our good friends Judi and Mick- Super sweet girl and the perfect example of why rescue is a fabulous way to go! Did some testing and training with her. She was super smart and calmly willing. Long time "pulling" issue resolved in 3 minutes without correction. With time and consistency the new habit will take and hold!

If you are seeking training for your pet, regardless of the issues or problems you may be having, and the trainer has to justify what they're doing to you (i.e. explain the "need" for corrections or punishments that look or feel harsh to you) follow your instinct. There are certainly times when a well timed correction can so quickly solve a problem that it makes sense to use a negative consequence to a behavior. BUT it should only ever startle, be mildly unpleasant, or not liked by your pet- never painful, scary, or hurt!

This is a good article, not a great one... The best thing is that is encourages (in every case!) determining what's behind the behavior. This is always the first step! If you attempt to use correction to solve a problem but don't remove the source of the problem, something new (and likely worse) will result.

Learn all about the most common dog behavior problems. Thoroughly understanding the most common dog behavior problems is the first step to solving and preventing them. A solid foundation of obedience training will help you prevent or better control common dog behavior problems.
