17 years of giving and receiving love. So heart-wrenching to let go, but their treasured memories will remain forever. Our beloved cats may not be with us for our whole life, but we can be with them for theirs. To all those who have loved and lost, may your hearts mend knowing you gave them a wonderful life that they would not otherwise have had. That is what adoption and cat rescue is all about. SAFER sends our love and prayers to all the Kitties who have departed and all the Kitty Angels who loved them.

On average, cats sleep between 13 and 14 hours in a 24-hour day. Seems fair considering the energy they expend on eating, grooming, and zoomies. Time for a rest…wishing everyone a Happy Labor Day!

Over a decade later, our hero STEVE NICHOLS is Still rescuing cats from trees! In August 2024, we called Steve for help. A cat that did not appear to have an owner was stuck high in a tree. But that didn’t matter to Steve. He came right over and climbed the tree. The cat continued to go higher, but Steve was persistent. Eventually, the cat was able to jump off safely and run away. Steve would not accept any payment from SAFER or the homeowner! We cannot thank Steve enough for his prompt and amazing service. Introducing a New Kitten to Your Resident Cat: Give your new kitten a room of his own with the door closed. Include a litter box, food bowl, water bowl, a hiding and sleeping area, and plenty of toys to keep him occupied (but be sure to spend lots of time in the room with your him AND dote on your Resident Kitty when you leave). The cats will sniff each other under the door. Once they are calm while smelling each other under the door, take something from the kitten’s room that has his scent and place it outside the room so that the resident cat can smell it. Let the resident cat investigate it in his own time. When the he is comfortable with this new scent, open the door - but separate the doorway with baby gates or screen. This allows the cats to see and smell each other without touching until they realize there is no danger from the other cat. Be patient. It may take several days. Once they are both comfortable, you can open the door and show the new kitten each room slowly and under supervision. They will eventually get used to each other, and you will have a happy family. Part cat ownership is regular vet check-ups. If not already vetted, schedule your kitten’s first visit.

This is 4-year-old handsome sweet Roy and he is looking for his forever home! Let me, his Foster Mom, explain with a short story. He came to our Florida winter home in February 2023; we thought he was a neighborhood kitty. He came back again in March 2024 in pretty bad shape, starving and had a paw he couldn't put any weight on. Yup, his owners had LEFT HIM! After successfully trapping him, he went to the Humane Society to get a chance at life, got neutered, all his shots, de-wormed (twice), and then up for adoption. Nobody came (4 yr. old black cat). Then he went to PetSmart and they told me nobody ever comes to look at him. I just couldn't take it...he's coming to Maine and we will find him his forever family. So, here we are 3 months in, and he has realized he can be loved and fed and have a nice comfy bed to sleep in. He is a sweetie and even our vet said she could tell he was a really nice cat! But...I'm not going to sugar coat it, as sweet as he is, he does from time to time want to grab your leg and nip you. Remember, this was a kitty that was an abandoned Tom Cat, all out survival! He gets frustrated that he doesn't get to be outside (I have let him out on occasion, and he does not take off, he just wants to smell his world) and he is frustrated that there are our two cats in his orbit, they call it “redirected aggression.” There is no love between them. So, if you feel you could be his world as his forever home, just want to meet him, or want to talk about him, call me. Just know I will do my due diligence in checking you out! TNR (Trap Neuter Return) works. Since 1998, SAFER has rescued over 4,000 cats, kittens, strays, lost, hurt, and feral cats. All cats get veterinary care, spay/neuter, and are put up for adoption unless they are too feral (never been touched by humans and are unable to adapt for adoption).
Feral cats are vetted and ear-tipped (small tip of left ear tip is removed while under anesthesia by a veterinarian so that the cat can be identified once returned to the cat’s original location). SAFER cares for these feral cats every day with shelter, water, food, and vet care for the remainder of their lives. Lost cats may be returned to their home, if one can be identified.

Heat stress and heat stroke can KILL. Be sure your kitty (and other kitties that live outside) has shelter from the sun and heat, fresh cool water, and food. If a cat is suffering from heat-related issues, gradually cool the cat down by applying a damp cloth to the cat's skin and see a vet asap. Be careful not to agitate the cat as the extra stress can increase body temperature further. If you cool a cat down too suddenly, you may send them into shock.

As we move into the hotter months, just as our own cats struggle in the summer sun, so do outdoor cats. Please place a bowl of fresh water outside in a shady area if you know there are cats around your house – IT COULD SAVE THEIR LIFE!
