Thank you to the Missoula County Sheriff's Office and our Missoula Search and Rescue team members for helping us and to all of our clients who have reached out with thoughts and condolences it means so much to know the community is behind us in this difficult time.

We are asking anyone who would like to contribute to Christine's legacy to send donations in honor of her, Gypsy, and Gunny to either the The Humane Society of Western Montana or Bitter Root Humane Association.

The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its dedicated Missoula County Search and Rescue volunteers, Christine Howe, last week. As our Missoula County Search and Rescue family grieves the unexpected loss of Christine, we would like to recognize the many contributions she made as a valued member of the team and friend to all.

Christine served our country for decades and retired as a Captain, in the United States Navy. She was an asset to the Missoula/Western Montana community and she and her husband Dave established our search and rescue K9 teams. As an auxiliary member and invaluable asset, she was an ever-present cornerstone to all K9 search and rescue trainings and missions. Her unassuming contributions to our community are immeasurable. Christine will be sorely missed.

Missoula County Sheriff’s Office and Missoula County Search and Rescue members asks that you keep all those impacted by this tragedy in your prayers, please hug your loved ones and dogs extra tight tonight – and always.

Congratulations to Alex/Tikka and Diedra/Ava for completing a 48 hour Trailing course last week. Both dogs and handlers were like sponges when it came to absorbing and implementing our way of manhunting. Trailing, the Sharp K9s way, is the most challenging and rewarding discipline a K9 team can undertake. It takes patience, physical and mental stamina, a keen sense of observation for the dog and your surroundings, as well as, ability to operate and excel in fog and friction. Sound like fun? Let's get started!

We just finished a 160 hour detection course for three K9/Handler Explosives and Human Remains detection teams. All three teams did fabulous and the Western Montana weather even cooperated! The imprinting and search phases were super cool to watch because the dogs being trained were so different. We trained a Belgian Malinois, Karelian Bear Dog, and a Deutsch Drahthaar. Our assumptions about athleticism, olfactory retention, stamina, and operational obedience were tested daily. The teams never let us down. Fortunately, the Malinois and Drahthaar are local and already train with us regularly as Trailing dogs. The KBD has headed back to Chicago to do his work.

As a student, the very first dog I worked for obedience was a Poodle named Max. We don't get many Poodles at Sharp K9s but they are great dogs. Oliver is easy to train, super sweet, athletic and has great prey drive. Welcome little man!

We finished our first week of detection training with Ellie, Finley and Benelli to get success. The imprinting process for Human Remains and Explosives is going great as all three pups have learned and like “the game”. It’s been awesome to witness how the different breeds work to locate and alert on source.

We've recently had Artemis (Shep X) and Owen (Airdale) in for basic obedience. Artemis left last week and we were sad to see her go! Owen is doing a great job of learning some new skills.

Just finished up 2 week Basic Obedience training for Lucy, a 5 month old Dutch Shepherd/GSD pup and Steel, a 3 yr old GSD. They did great and were a pleasure to work with as were their owners. Hope to have them back for Advanced Obedience.
