Having an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is not just great for your mental well-being, but it can also save you lots of money by waiving pet rent, fees, and deposits! 😌💰 According to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), “Housing providers may not require persons with disabilities to pay extra fees or deposits or place any other special conditions or requirements as a condition of receiving a reasonable accommodation.” Under federal and state housing laws, housing providers are strictly prohibited from charging pet rent, fees, or deposits for an ESA. Also, landlords cannot charge application fees when considering a request for an ESA. Even if the building has a policy of charging fees or security deposits for all pets, ESAs are exempt since they are not considered pets but rather designated as Assistance Animals under Fair Housing Act (FHA) regulations.
