Hello friends!

I hope all of you and your pets are healthy and safe! This year I will be remaining in Prescott, Arizona for the summer. So this message is directed towards my Prescott clients. To all my human and animal friends in Indiana, I miss you dearly and am looking forward to the day I am able to travel and visit you!

To everyone in the quad city area, I am available for animal care services beginning May 15th!!! I know many of you are remaining at home with your pets, however, if you need a break from walking your dogs, I am here to help! Or maybe your routine hasn't changed with the pandemic and you need a petsitter - I'm here!

I have developed a pretty good sanitation system to ensure the health and safety of you and your pets and am able to remain somewhat socially distant while caring for your pets.

Shoot me a message if you think you might need me! And share this post to help me gain a larger client base in AZ!

Peace, love and tail wags!

YES!! Healthy and delicious! I give my dogs fresh blueberries and occasionally I'll share my blueberry oatmeal with them. 😋

Oddly, there is a weird urban legend circulating around social media claiming blueberries are toxic to dogs.🤔

This couldn’t be any further from the truth and there’s even science to back that up!Labelled today’s "superfood💥," blueberries are low in calories and incredibly good for your pet!

In a study conducted on sled🛷dogs, blueberry supplementation elicited significantly elevated antioxidant status in the dogs which suggests that dogs fed blueberries could be better protected against oxidative stress/damage. What the big deal about Oxidative stress?

Well, it leads to many disease conditions in the body. Some of these include diseases such as gene mutations, anxiety, cancers, chronic fatigue, heart and blood vessel disorders, diabetes, heart failure💔, and inflammatory diseases. So, by offering your furry companion blueberries, you may help better protect them against some of these diseases.

What’s more, according to lab studies, here are some other examples of blueberry health benefits:

1. High in Antioxidants
2. Help Fight Cancer
3. Amp Up Weight Loss
4. Boost Brain Health
5. Alleviate Inflammation
6. Support Digestion
7. Promote Heart Health

How many blueberries would you need to feed? In the study on sled dogs🐶, they were fed a supplemented diet in which 2% of the daily food intake was blueberries, just 2%! So, for a medium sized dog, start with a teaspoon.🥄

Don’t be afraid of adding fresh foods to your pet’s bowl and here’s to building the forever dogs my fellow pet parents!

Ready for the featured pet of September?! Sorry I didn’t announce it yesterday. I was busy rallying for animal rights with my dogs! (See last post) 🙂

Without further ado, the pet’s name drawn for the featured pet was... Sox! Sox is a Maine C**n kitty who weighs more than some dogs! He enjoys going on walks around his property in his stroller and watching all the wildlife come out at sunrise and sunset. Sox is very affectionate and loves human company however he is self-sufficient in many ways. He can open doors and cabinets and he prefers to serve himself his beverages. He does this by using the ice dispenser on the fridge and drinking out of the sink. Sox spends his summers in Maine with his mom, Barbara. I miss him so much and I can’t wait to see him again soon. Sox, your prize is on its way to you from Indiana! 😽

Are you over-vaccinating your pet?
14/08/2018

Are you over-vaccinating your pet?

SO JUST HOW LONG DO YOUR PET’S SHOTS LAST?

Definitely longer than a year!

According to the top pet immunologist (aka vaccine expert) in the world, Dr. Ronald Schultz, Ph.D. – “ Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions.”

What the heck are adverse reactions (or side effects)?

Well according to the other rock star pet immunologist Dr. Jean Dodds:

“Side effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dog’s life (Dodd, 2001).

Severe and fatal adverse reactions include:

•Susceptibility to infections.

•Neurological disorders and encephalitis.

•Aberrant behavior, including unprovoked aggression.

•Vaccines are linked to seizures. Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and, presumably, other vaccines have been linked with poly neuropathy, a nerve disease that involves inflammation of several nerves. (Dodds,2001)”

SO HOW LONG EXACTLY DOES YOUR PET’S VACCINE LAST?

According to the recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), (basically the dudes who set the standards for the vets): “Among healthy dogs, all commercially available [core] vaccines are expected to induce a sustained protective immune response lasting at least 5 yr. thereafter”

Here’s the breakdown of the core vaccines from Dr. Ronald Schultz:

Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines:

Distemper- 7 years by challenge
Parvovirus – 7 years by challenge
Adenovirus – 7 years by challenge
Canine rabies – 3 years by challenge

The moral of the story here, if you have no idea when your pet is due or has been vaccinated, then just run a titer test and this will confirm if you are due, rather than over-vaccinate your poor pet, setting the stage for future problems!

What’s a titer test?

A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your pet’s blood. Basically, it’s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet.

It’s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination.

Vaccinating your pet is super important so don’t lose the overall message here: VACCINATE, JUST DON’T OVER-VACCINATE!

According to Dr. Dodds:

“Vaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, and has saved more animals' lives than any other medical advance.”

Happy Fourth!! I just want to remind you all to take into consideration your pets and the wildlife around you as you celebrate today and tonight. The sound of fireworks can be truly terrifying to animals. I love fireworks and I admit, I'll be catching the show tonight. But every Fourth of July, my dogs think we're under attack and are very confused as to why we humans are so fascinated by the colorful bombs. If you have a pet who you know does not react well to loud noises, please consider not setting off fireworks at your home to spare them from any discomfort.
Here are some steps to take to help ease your furry friend's anxiety tonight:
1. Close the blinds/curtains.
2. Turn on a fan. The sound will help muffle the loud booms and the cool air will relax your pet.
3. Provide them with LOTS of water! We need to keep our pets well hydrated this time of year, but especially when they are feeling nervous.
4. Play some soothing music. I play a lullaby playlist or a guided meditation from Spotify for my pups. Classical music is another good option! The radio station, wfiu (103.7) plays classical and jazz.
5. Aromatherapy -
Essential oils aren't just for humans, animals can benefit from them too! If you have a dog, you can use *pure* lavender, eucalyptus and/or chamomile in an oil diffuser. You can also take a small dab of lavender and gently rub it on their forehead and ears. Be sure not to get it *in* their ears or too close to their eyes.
**These oils have calming effects on dogs but I'm not sure if they are safe for other animals. Be sure to do your research before using them to help your other pets!
6. Calming treats -
I give my pup, Lyla, over-the-counter treats to help with her anxiety. (treats pictured below) VetriScience also makes calming treats for cats. These treats, as well as similar products, can be found at Walmart, Petco and most other pet food stores. Be sure to check the ingredients for anything that your pet may not be able to have for whatever medical reason.

Hooray! It's July! Sorry I'm a day late. I've already drawn a name for the featured pet of the month though!

I'm excited to announce the featured pet of July is... Phoebe! This pretty lady always prances around with her head (and tail) held high as she guides me around the house to care for her fellow feline family. She has proven to be an excellent cuddle buddy at night and an excellent bird watcher during the day. Julianne Miranda, please tell Phoebe her prize is on its way! 😸
