Jane Doe a Delhi Deer These are the deer that come regularly to my property. l've watched them long enough that I can tell

After some months of sharing Jane's story on my personal page, I'm finally giving her a page of her own (she'll share it with the rest of the herd) so people can see just The Daily Deer and not have to wade through my personal posts and views. I hope these photos, videos and updates can bring some joy to your day. Being out with the deer and being accepted by them is the very best part of living here in Delhi, NY.

After it was pointed out that just anyone could view this page and possibly harm Jane and the others, I created a new group (NOT a page) to share their stories. The group is called My Daily Delhi Deer and if you'd like to keep following the deer, please send a request.

So the deer hadn't been around for a few days until Tuesday night. There was no one on the lawn when I got home around 8 pm. I thought I'd throw out some apples anyway in case they showed up later. So I started pulling labels off apples and tossing them out on the lawn. In the dark. Fourth apple almost brained poor Jane! In the space of 2 minutes I went from no deer to 10 deer! Waaay too dark to see who was there, although I know one was Clarice because when I called her name she gave me a head bob. So I put out corn which freaked the interlopers out because I was WALKING AMONG THEM. All sorts of hilarity ensued with dashing, posturing, white tail waving and snorting. Jane (got a good glimpse of her distinctive tail) just walked away into the woods, her attitude of disgust evident.

Happy to see the deer tonight. Last night all 7 were here and when I went to feed them, Puffin ran out the gate. P**F! They were gone in 3 seconds flat. So was Puffin. The deer didn't come back last night. We found Puffin at a neighbor's house barking to be let in. So loudly I could hear her a half mile away!!

The deer do not care if I show up in my pajamas, as long as I show up. Tonight my pjs were covered with extreme foul weather gear. Not wanting to feed corn since it was going to get drenched I fed apples. They were very happy. Wet but happy. I was also wet and happy.

So I let dogs out after dinner. Only Stiletto saw/heard anything and began to run the fence line, quietly, which means she sees something but it's stationary. I looked really hard - without glasses, I am dependent on seeing movement. After a minute a large brown blob resolved itself into Bossy. Perfectly camouflaged waiting for the rest of the group to show up for dinner. In these pictures she is 6' behind our propane tank and maybe 15' from our fence.

A friend is coming to town today that I haven't seen in 10 years, so I couldn't sleep and the dogs woke early. Jane, the twins and Silly were up early too. They sleep in the small woods right behind the house. When moving they often walk through the woods and skirt the corner of our fence. Here are pictures of them showing real concern as Stiletto guards our fence line. You can see the panic on their faces - NOT!

Another rainy day. As I returned home I saw Jane and the twins in the meadow. By the time I got the feed out of the back of the car and into the can, Clarice was 4' away head bobbing and tail waving. And everyone else was there too. Even Shorty and Silly. I tried to shoot a video but got the dreaded "Not Enough Room" message. Grrrr.

Deer in the Mist

28/03/2017

It was misty/foggy/rainy by turns all day. The deer were in our meadow but came eagerly when called.

28/03/2017

After everyone else had gone, these three does showed up. Very skittish, lots of flashing white tails. They ate what they could find and headed down the drive.

28/03/2017

Today Jane and the twins showed up early and I tapped my wrist and told her to come back later, At 6:00 both herds came back. Gave everybody apples then dished out corn. Clarice came almost up to me again. Made my day. :)

27/03/2017

So I looked out the door at 7:45 and there was one little deer. CLARICE! I called her name and she wiggled her tail for me and gave me a head bob. She hadn't gotten any food earlier so I went out. She came up with in 4' of me and we chatted for a few seconds then I got her an apple and some corn. She was sooo happy! I watched her eat and she was so cute when she raised her head with snow and corn stuck to her little nose. I

So for the last couple of days, a new doe has joined Jane and the twins. Some days she would show up without Jane. Sort of like a teenager told to "Take the girls to the cafeteria and wait with them". I say that because the new doe was too skitish to eat and she had a BIG spook in her. Like "OMG A HUMAN" and she'd flee across the lawn, and the road, into the meadow opposite with her tail up in alarm.

Today she was freaked out by a car coming down the road as I was putting out the feed for Jane and the twins. This made Bill panic because she ran w/o stopping right into the path of the oncoming car! Of course the driver knew enough to slow down (everybody looks for deer on this road) so she was fine. But yesterday she left THREE times, while the twins were eating.

I don't know if she's related to Jane or not, or whether Jane allowed her to join her group in preparation for leaving herself in a month or so to have this year's fawn. But I can tell who she is because of two odd tufts of hair on either side of the top of her tail. Today after I went in, she ventured back to the feeding area. As soon as I stepped out the door, her head came up and she went on full alert. Silly deer. So I decided that's what her name will be: Silly.

Jane and the twins came by very early today. I gave them apples since I need to get more feed. Here they are enjoying apples in the mud.

The deer were here! First time since the blizzard. So happy to see Jane and the twins! Turn up your volume for commentary. And yes, it's snowing AGAIN!

15/03/2017

No deer showed up in the blizzard, thank goodness because I wasn't going out my gate (which I could get to) to go to the cooler (which I couldn't) where the cans were covered with snow. Hopefully we'll be plowed out before feeding time tonight.

Your Daily Deer for Friday 3/3/17. Video #1 Sorry to be posting this so late, had a busy night!

02/03/2017

Your Daily Deer for Thursday 3/2/17: It started out to be an average day, and the video reflects that. But then as I went in, every head raised to watch a motorcycle come up the hill. Before they dropped their heads again a herd of 5 *very* light tan (from a distance I thought they were white) came across the road and headed up to the feeding stations. For a tense minute or so there was a stand off, then, some new arrivals got some corn and the fisticuffs (hoofticuff?) began. Eventually Bossy ran 4 of them back across the road and one stayed until Jane ran her off! Video for today is in the comments.

27/02/2017

Your Daily Deer for Monday 2/27/17: We had two seatings today. Bossy brought her girls by at 4:30 and Shorty and Four got their share of corn. Although Shorty tried to run away but everyone was so busy eating that she came back. I should mention that Clarice always meets me at the gate and wags her tail in welcome. :) While everyone else holds back a bit while I get the corn spread out. Bossy likes apples better than corn. It's one reason why Shorty got corn today as Bossy was too busy working on an apple to notice Shorty eating the furthest pile of corn.

At 5:30, Jane brought the twins by and patiently waited while I waded through the mud to get corn for them. Then I threw out apples and DoeA went to investigate. She loves, loves, loves her apples!

Your Daily Deer for Thursday fen 23.

23/02/2017

Your Daily Deer for Wednesday: Clarice showed up tonight with what I assume is her older sister 4/7. Following on her heels was DoeA and her fabulous tail. Thought that was odd, but I began feeding. By the Tim I'd put out corn for those three, Bossy and Shorty showed up. I put out more piles and waited to see if Jane and DoeB would show up but not yet. The driveway is a sea of mud. Finding places to put the corn was hard!

20/02/2017

Monday's Daily Deer. Don't panic, I misspoke in the video. Jane WAS there as was Bossy, the twins and Clarice. Shorty and 4/7 were missing. Probably why there was less pushing and jumping around. I didn't have my glasses on and misidentified the big girls. Also it was a freaking sheet of ice and I was sliding everywhere. Either that or cracking ice LOUDLY when I did step.
