It is with deep sadness and great joy that I announce the closure of the Velvet Poodle. The Velvet Poodle has been a family business since 1968. I took it over in 1993. I did sell it a few years ago but needed to take it back over when the new owner couldn't continue in it and there was much confusion between her actions and mine.
During the course of my tenure at the Velvet Poodle, I completed both an undergraduate degree in Psychology at Wayne State College and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Nebraska. I raised 3 children in the business and they now attend college and have chosen fields of study and work. With 2 children left at home and 30 rental properties, as you can imagine, life is very busy. I have decided to get back into the field of study I graduated from almost a decade ago and with that, I am very excited!
I love this business, I loved providing families with their furry members for decades. I will miss all of the families and taking care of the puppies. I will miss Dr. Billiar, our veterinarian and our weekly meetings. I miss my children working with me and running the store while I worked my other endeavors. But most of all I will miss my customers, both 4 legged and their humans. I have shed many tears in this decision but it is the right one for myself and my family.
Thank you Siouxland for your decades of loyalty and love. My hope is someone steps in to continue to provide a great selection of well raised puppies from licensed and inspected breeders that follow 178 pages of the Animal Welfare Act. I love rescue and shelter pets (Nico, a shelter mix was the best dog I ever had) but I believe families should have choices regarding their furry four legged family members.
I finally want to address the slander that the Velvet Poodle was "closed down"--It was not. Business has been great. I have attached a copy of the last inspection report with no findings.
