We at Greatmates Christchurch heavily endorse the belief that adopting a greyhound is just the beginning, and further training is something that will help you further bond and understand your new best friend! There will be further classes throughout the year, so don't worry, there's still time!

Do you have a gorgeous greyhound? We have a Greyhound 101 class starting this Sunday!! There is currently only 3 spots left 🐶 See details below ⬇️

🗓 Sunday 7th April @ 3:00pm
This class is for our beloved greyhounds, they tend to not fit well into normal training classes so we created one designed just for them, to help them integrate into pet life and learn their commands! Not only will the hounds be learning new things, you will be too. You will learn about the cute, strange quirks of greyhounds, how to best coach them in fearful situations they may never have been in before, how to advocate for your greyhound, and over all be the best dog-parent you can be 😊 We will teach your greyhound self control, which is helpful in MANY situations, as well as recall, and much more! You will meet new greyhound owners that might be experiencing the same quirks as you, and give each other encouragement and support ❤
Each class is run at the same time on consecutive Sundays for 3 weeks.
This class will be $120 total

Did you know that Parkavon Dog Training has a 3 week class, specifically tailored to our special friends??? We heavily endorse this training, and is taken by Kerry, who has been training our greyhounds for AT LEAST the past three years.

Today we take the time to wish a very special happy thirteenth birthday to Lucas!
Over the past year, Lucas has held a voluntary position here at our Greatmates Christchurch kennel, where he has made many furry friends, as well as a few older brothers and sisters he enjoys teasing! He has been an absolute joy to work with, and we look forward to continuing watching you grow.
We love you Lucas, keep being you!

As of 8th December 2023 I (Hannah) will be stepping down from my role as Greyhound Manager at Greatmates Christchurch. This is incredibly bittersweet but over the past year we have seen 93 dogs adopted, held two great mates events and completed our own Greatmates Christchurch Private adoptions. The most special one being my own boy Bigtime Stunner who came home as a foster and is now never leaving.

But the biggest achievement was connecting with the other two South Island Greatmates kennel bases to help each other with assessments, puppy love, photo shoots, events and raising awareness for greyhounds! Its amazing what can be done when everyone comes together to do what is best for the greyhounds.

To Calum and May Great Mates - Rangiora thank you for paving the pathway for the rehoming kennels in the South Island and for answering my endless questions about the process. Your kindness and wisdom never went unnoticed and was always appreciated.

To Sarah, Shane, Erika and Wolfie - Adobe Kennels Thank you for helping us with cat assessments, dog swaps to fulfil adoptions and for always being keen to brainstorm new ideas.

To Ash and Tayla at Rehab to Rehome - Canterbury thank you for all of the help and ideas with events and for everything you do for getting the rehab greyhounds ready to be rehomed.

To the different agencies thank you for all you do for rehoming dogs from marketing, events, spending time getting to know them, liaising with foster families and everything that goes unseen - THANK YOU -

A special thank you to Lisa Philp from GAP who recognised that Stunner was my boy before I had quite come to terms with it and for your unwavering support the past few months. You are an absolute star.

Greatmates Christchurch kennels will be in good hands as our long term worker Jordan De Winter steps up to take over the role.

Our first Greatmates Special Adoption - Goldstar Marvely (Now Lily) is celebrating her 8th birthday today!!

Lily has fit into home life perfectly and is quite content with her husky sister and cat sibling sooty but most importantly she loooooves her cuddle time with her Mama on the bed (or couch)

On Saturday 18/11/23 our two best greyhound friends Bob (Homebush Bomber) and Molly (Atom Doll) were adopted together to live out the rest of their retired days together 🥹❤️

We are so excited to get more updates on their antics and a massive thank you to Lisa from Greyhounds As Pets NZ for finding them the perfect home ❤️

It was amazing to be able to have our stall at such a prestigious event and to be given the chance to educate the public - while also providing free greyhound cuddles - about just how good these retired racers are as pets 🥰

A massive thank you to all of the volunteers who came down, to Greyhound Racing New Zealand for sponsoring the stall, to the agencies and kennels bases who got involved and helped at such short notice, to Rachel Sloan who took the majority of these gorgeous photos and most importantly to everyone who stopped by and gave our greyhounds some love ❤️❤️

Meet our little unicorn hound Juju!

Juju (Goldstar Jubilee) is the sweetest little hound you ever did see! She has the big green tick to live with cats, small white fluffies, livestock and everything in between. Juju will be best suited to live with another confident dog as she comes out of her shell with other dogs but is still shy on first meeting with other people.

Jubilee is looking for a home where she can receive lots of love and attention while also spending her days with another four legged friend 🥰

Juju is currently out in foster and is doing amazing at adjusting into pet life while also acing her crate training 🥳
