Josie and Harper day! 🥰

We love these sisters so much and they crack us up. They are polar opposites in every way with Josie working on wild girl behaviors and Harper working on some big fears and worries.

Our hands on part of the session today was to help Harper welcome a visitor indoors and she rocked it! ❤️

, vet skills, and visitor practice with Brie! 🥰

This little nugget is going to be a slow and steady wins the race girl when it comes to vet skills but as long as we work at her pace she is game to participate and does so just as hilariously as she does everything else.

We have to shout out what an awesome job she’s done welcoming a visitor both times we came over and even adding vet skills practice this time didn’t make her decide we were any less welcome! ❤️

We spent yesterday’s in-shelter day with Lennic, Benji, and Toby! 🥰

🐾 This was our first time meeting Lennic and guys, he is so cute and fun and silly. He’s got personality to spare and is so inquisitive and ready to be by your side and assist with things. Mapping us to the park? I’m right here to help lady! We had the best time with this kid.

🐾 Benji is just a year old and he’s having a tough time at the shelter. He started out as an easy blue dot guy and those notes match the experience of his finder. In some ways he is still easy (and so cuddly and sweet and desperate to connect with humans) but his stress level has escalated more quickly than is healthy and he could really, really use a quiet home environment to decompress in.

🐾 This was our third date with Toby and talk about a big silly personality. This guy is so fun. He was actually more subdued than usual yesterday and told us he really just wanted to drive around in the air conditioned car rather than his usual get up and go adventuring. We feel you buddy, it was swampy as heck!

Okay, Austin. Waffle Fry’s foster family heads out of town soon and that means he’s headed back to the shelter.

This boy is so wonderful and where we’d really love to see him going is to an adoptive home! Even a long term foster would be great until he finds that special someone. 🥰

Waffle Fry is sunshine and resilience in dog form which is exactly what a lot of us need more of these days. He is guaranteed to bring joy, love, and laughter to your life. He’s a friend to all and an easy going, sweethearted charmer.

Waffle Fry is just barely a year old and puppies are usually adopted quickly at the shelter (he’s been there since he was a much smaller niblet). The worry is that hearing this guy has a neurological condition may be giving adopters pause. We promise that it shouldn’t!

Waffle Fry’s condition mostly shows up in his motor planning and control but it just means he’s a little floppy and extra silly and adorable and sometimes needs an extra minute and a little support to navigate a new physical environment. He would like everyone to know that he did *amazing* today on a very busy walk!

He does his and his actual #1 potties fully outdoors. The belly band is just for incidental dribbles and is no biggie at all. And while he wants to play his heart out with all the dogs, he’s also practicing taking cues to be calmer around older foster sister and we’d say even doing better than average for a young adolescent!

Whoever takes this special boy home is going to be so very lucky. If we had a spot open we’d scoop him up in a heartbeat. We can’t get enough of him. Adopt Waffle Fry! ❤️

It took a few sessions but beautiful girl Journey was paparazzi ready today! 🥰

This precious lady has some high fear with humans including still not being fully comfortable with some members of her own family, as well as some general noise sensitivity. She also has a brand new hip dysplasia diagnosis and while that’s a bummer, we’re hopeful that making sure her pain is well managed might positively impact her behavior.

This was Journey’s first visit to our place for a backyard party and she did great. She also snuck in her first full sniffs of us. ❤️

Hello Nala! 🥰

We haven’t gotten to see this beautiful face for awhile but Nala recently had a stretch of out of character behavior that included some touch sensitivity and resource guarding. Our first thought when we read mom and dad’s email was something medical may be going on and it turned out Nala had been having an upset tummy from trouble adjusting to a food change.

We still met today to make sure we are addressing things from the behavioral end but it was another of so many reminders we see of how physical issues impact behavior. And they don’t have to be serious or dramatic ones! Digestive issues, allergies, dental issues, ear infections (we had this with trainer pup Socks this spring) can all be culprits.

Nala recommends checking out the “pain and physical health’s impact on behavior” section of our resource library for more: https://www.dogpossibleaustin.com/resources ❤️

Who was camera ready for the first time today *and* happily welcomed us into the house? Handsome gentleman Prince! 🥰

This kiddo is a senior who has never really been able to have visitors but he has been absolutely rocking it this go around and we are so proud of him.

Also rocking it is sister Luna whose skills are looking super casual! ❤️

Catching up with beautiful boy Aslan! 🥰

This buddy has some more complicated needs than were evident during his shelter stay and he is lucky to have landed with such a dedicated mom.

He got a little overwhelmed on his apartment grounds at the end of the appointment but he did a *fantastic* job welcoming us inside today and showing us around his neighborhood which is a big deal. ❤️

Life in recent times is a lot to take in and navigate. Read the news. Scroll the toxic algorithms. Or just note the many ways big and small your daily life is impacted by external forces.

Add a personal struggle or loss and oof, it can be hard to focus on the tasks at hand or to be the best version of yourself as well as you’d like. We’re all human after all. Imperfect and susceptible to the physiological effects of stress and overstimulation.

The same is true for dogs. Both prolonged and acute stress impact them much as they impact us. Overstimulation too. We often have to explain that when we’re working on changing a behavior or emotional response or building a new one, we don’t want to be working in a context more intense than the dog can successfully handle.

Think about how you feel trying to learn something new or overcome a fear or worry. Is it harder or easier to do that when stressors and stimuli are piling up in your life and in the setting in which you’re trying to learn?

How is your ability to be effective in day to day tasks and focus on something simple like responding to emails affected? How are your emotional responses? How is your tolerance to things that typically require some of your emotional reserves to navigate successfully?

All of these are lessons we can apply in supporting our dogs. Have things been harder recently? Do we have longer term or more acute stressors at play? Are we choosing an appropriate environment and context to work in? How can we adjust?

And yes, we’re encouraging you to ask how those questions apply to dogs but we’d encourage you to apply them to yourself too. ❤️

Finding the Possible in Our Relationships with Dogs

This webinar will examine the ways in which our perspective, expectations, and how we choose to live with our dogs can impact what’s possible in our relationships with them. How can we chart a course that’s fair to ourselves and to our canine companions? How do we identify what’s possible and best set ourselves and our dogs up to work towards the possible with joy? This event is approved for 2.5 CEU credits through CCPDT and 1.5 CEU credits through IAABC.

PS. We will be offline today but all requested webinars will be sent out tomorrow!
