As a dog trainer, usually we have dogs that take us down the path of dog training because of behavior issues or we get dogs to help take us down the training path. Soka was my dog that I originally adopted because I wanted to be a trainer. I took her to an obedience class and they gave me a choke collar to put on her and we never went back. We went through Karen Pryor Academy together so we both could see there’s a better way to learn and train and communicate. We hiked together and went on all the adventures. She was always up for learning something new. She absolutely loved training and life. We lost Soka two months ago to heart failure. Although there’s a huge hole in our hearts (and our house), my mission will always be to share positive training with others in her honor.

Sometimes the best training is to teach animal animal to do nothing.

Chico liked to charge the food bowl when the access door was opened. He sometimes even liked to escape when you turned your back.

Teaching a calm behavior (station on perch when food door opens) kept him and his human friends safe and he got some extra nuts 🙂.

Gulf World Marine Park! Up for another challenge?

Ashoka and Lilli learned touch, spin and high five through positive reinforcement. They want to see how the dolphins do it!

GO FIND IT!

We may be a day late, but we went on an egg hunt tonight. Prizes inside were clove oil.

Does your dog know about nosework? Soka loves it!

INNOVATE

I played a short game with my dog tonight. Any time I said INNOVATE, I wanted to see a new behavior. I think it was harder for me to see that she might have slightly done a different behavior.

What kind of things are you doing with your dogs while you stay at home?

Have you clicker trained your dog? Check out a session with a polar bear. See any similarities?

Morning training sessions are always better with peanut butter! 🥜

Creativity is so awesome!

Bolingo is taking “innovate” to the next level! This was the first time we introduced boomer balls outside. He did an amazing job! 😍🦍
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Innovate is a behavior where the animal gets to choose what they do! The only rule? They can’t do the same thing twice in one session. These types of behaviors increase a capacity for learning and creativity, while also giving the animal the choice of what they want to do!

What would you do with a boomer ball if you were Bolingo in the session?! Any animal trainers out there-what unique things have you seen done with innovate/create sessions?! 💙

The Benefits of Trick Training Your Dog

New post about trick training! I attended an Emily Larlham seminar last weekend and loved that tricks build very good foundation skills.

Teaching your dog tricks can be a really cute way to show off at a party, but there are many benefits that can help with everyday life.

Always keep this video in the back of your mind. Not sure what a poisoned cue is? Watch this one minute video.

Poisoned cues happen more commonly than we realize. Poisoned cues are cues, words or actions, that have become associated with something unpleasant. While some pets may just try to avoid situations where they see or hear these stimuli. Other pets may react aggressively (in defense) when this happens.

Accepting That Your Dog Might Be In Pain | The Other End of the Leash Blog | Patricia McConnell

If your dog's behavior changes almost overnight, always have this in the back of your mind. I can get grumpy when I'm in pain, don't you?

Years ago I saw a client whose dog, let’s call him Charlie, entered the room with a neck twisted slightly to the side. It wasn’t extreme, but it was obvious, if you paid attention to the way the dog moved. The owners had brought the dog in because...

Good stuff to remember!

If you're still feeding out of a bowl I highly recommend you take a look at this infographic. Utilizing different work-to-eat toys takes the same amount of prep time as filling a bowl, and there are a ton of benefits from doing so. One of the benefits is a tired dog, and another benefit is it slows your dog's eating down. All three of our dogs eat every meal in a work-to-eat fashion. Check out this video of how you can use the Monster Ball, which is pictured below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96CNbU7Xo2A

The Not-So-Obvious Benefits of a Beginner Dog Training Class...

Check out an article I wrote about benefits we don't always think about when we go to a group training class.

“I just want my dog to…” It is the phrase heard over and over at group dog training classes when the owners are asked what they’d like to get out of the class.

I'm teaching a new class starting August 15th in Addison! Check out the details below :)

FUN new class starting next week:
VIRAL VIDEO PUPS -
This class is for the budding superstar (human and canine)! As a group, we will brainstorm concepts for a short movie (5 minutes). It can be funny, moving, serious, or educational. We’ll then break down each “role” and will work on these during the next 5 weeks. Remember, there are no small roles, only small dogs! Each student will receive a YouTube link of the final product to share with friends and family.

This is a great class to work on tricks, distance work, distractions and obedience…you know, all the stuff that canine superstars need to succeed!

Instructor: Michelle McClelland

Saturdays - August 15th through September 19th (Skips August 29th)
10am through 11am
Price: $125

Doggone Crazy!

How well can you read your dog? Watch this video to learn how to know when your dog is getting anxious in a situation.

Dog body language lesson - Displacement Behavior: normal behaviors displayed out of context. These indicate that the dog is feeling conflict. He may want to bark, or bite or leave, but instead he scratches or digs. Examples include, scratching when not itchy, yawning when not tired, grooming for no evident reason etc. Watch this video and count the number of displacement behaviors. Tell us in the comments how many you saw. Can you tell what is causing the dogs to be conflicted and anxious?

When you see your dog doing any of these around kids, it's time to intervene and give them each something else to do. The dog is telling you that he has had enough and is feeling anxious.
