Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Animal Rescue, Education and Advocacy

Changing the world one animal at a time. Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Many lives were saved.

is a 501(c)3 not for profit animal rescue, education and advocacy group in NYC. We believe that Each Animal Counts™ and are committed to changing the world, one animal at a time. Purpose:

Give Me Shelter Project strives to elevate the societal value of animal life through various activities including:
• Rescue and placement of unwanted animals
• Provision of necessary medical care
• Promoting tr

ap-neuter-return (TNR)
• Adoptions
• Support for and collaboration with individuals and other animal welfare organizations
• Education of the public on the importance of sterilization, basic animal care, humane treatment of animals, and the value of animals as an integral part of our society. History and Accomplishments:

Our story began in 2008 when we were part of a small group of independent rescuers who came together to rescue 88 cats from an eviction situation. Most of the cats were not friendly enough to be adopted. We searched and found placements far and wide (some cats were flown to a sanctuary in Arizona!). We undertook a similar rescue of 64 cats the following year. The scope of these rescues took an enormous toll on us physically, emotionally and financially. Many agencies advised us to turn the cats over to the local “kill” shelter. Instead, we felt compelled to consider the life of each individual cat and do all we could to protect that life. We were able to sleep at night knowing we made the right decision. Along the way, we rescued numerous other individual cats who found themselves in dire situations like Allison who was trapped in an abandoned building, and Becky who was blind and living on the street. Hobo was hit by a car and found on the side of the road with a broken arm. We now have a total of 44 cats in our care being fostered in several locations. Many would have been euthanized because the needed medical care was too expensive. Our Veterinarians saved a total of seven cats that had a deadly case of feline distemper. Many of these wonderful cats have been adopted into their forever homes. We have since rescued many more who are waiting for theirs. We have several cats with ongoing but treatable medical conditions. All donations go directly to the care of the animals to cover the cost of veterinary care, food and litter.

This is the cat that eluded rescuers for 11 days with a hunting trap attached to her foot.

The surgery went great. She is hospitalized, and they are monitoring her closely.

Tuxie Girl was just taken in for surgery (amputation). PLEASE ADD YOUR PRAYERS TO OURS for a successful surgery and smooth recovery.

UPDATE January 9, 2025

On December 25, a cat in Mill Basin, Brooklyn was seen dangling and caught on a fence. She had a dangerous hunting trap clamped on her foot. The homeowner quickly freed her from the fence, but she took off.

Merrie Gordon from Animal Lifeline, Inc. and Jenn Duart were called in the next day and after an exhaustive 11 day search, she was finally caught and rushed to the emergency vet.

Tuxie Girl’s paw was crushed. Her bones are broken and the soft tissue in her foot is completely dead. She has a massive infection and needs an urgent amputation to prevent sepsis and further damage. On top of this, we are monitoring her for a possible heart condition. Right now, we are anxiously working with vets who are providing her with the best care possible. We estimate her total medical expenses will reach $6,400.

Please share and donate.

I'm PARKER and I have a New Year Wish!

As you can see, I’m a beautiful six month old ginger kitten.
I've been trying to find a very special human and a very special home.

I'm looking for a person that already has a kitty with FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) or someone with NO cats that would take in a special little fluff like me.

I probably won’t have nine lives, but I’ll gladly enjoy the one I've got!

I know there’s a lap out there with my name on it, and I’ve been waiting so long for you! I can tell you that I'm a super affectionate “purr machine”. I love to talk and I'm soooo playful. I'll make a great companion for your FeLV kitty!

Come meet me today to see that I’m just as special as any other kitty!

Parker is located on the border of Queens and Long Island, NY.
We are looking for an experienced Foster or Adopter in the surrounding areas. Parker is male and born 6/28/2024.
Since he is FeLV positive, we will assist financially with future
medical expenses if needed.

Say hello to Ike, Mikey and Twizzler! These 3 curious boys would love to be adopted into your home. These boys were born around August 25th. They are all loveable and affectionate. Twizzler is probably the most outgoing of the 3. He is very playful and loves to be held. Ike loves running around with his mouse in his mouth and to sit on your lap. Adorable Mikey loves to play and follow his brothers around. They are bonded and sleep together. Any pair would be perfect for your home. Please come see them at our adoption event. Saturday , January 11 at Petsmart in New Hyde Park from 12-4. Inquire at Give Me Shelter Project, Inc.
