Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Animal Rescue, Education and Advocacy

Changing the world one animal at a time. Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Many lives were saved.

is a 501(c)3 not for profit animal rescue, education and advocacy group in NYC. We believe that Each Animal Counts™ and are committed to changing the world, one animal at a time. Purpose:

Give Me Shelter Project strives to elevate the societal value of animal life through various activities including:
• Rescue and placement of unwanted animals
• Provision of necessary medical care
• Promoting tr

ap-neuter-return (TNR)
• Adoptions
• Support for and collaboration with individuals and other animal welfare organizations
• Education of the public on the importance of sterilization, basic animal care, humane treatment of animals, and the value of animals as an integral part of our society. History and Accomplishments:

Our story began in 2008 when we were part of a small group of independent rescuers who came together to rescue 88 cats from an eviction situation. Most of the cats were not friendly enough to be adopted. We searched and found placements far and wide (some cats were flown to a sanctuary in Arizona!). We undertook a similar rescue of 64 cats the following year. The scope of these rescues took an enormous toll on us physically, emotionally and financially. Many agencies advised us to turn the cats over to the local “kill” shelter. Instead, we felt compelled to consider the life of each individual cat and do all we could to protect that life. We were able to sleep at night knowing we made the right decision. Along the way, we rescued numerous other individual cats who found themselves in dire situations like Allison who was trapped in an abandoned building, and Becky who was blind and living on the street. Hobo was hit by a car and found on the side of the road with a broken arm. We now have a total of 44 cats in our care being fostered in several locations. Many would have been euthanized because the needed medical care was too expensive. Our Veterinarians saved a total of seven cats that had a deadly case of feline distemper. Many of these wonderful cats have been adopted into their forever homes. We have since rescued many more who are waiting for theirs. We have several cats with ongoing but treatable medical conditions. All donations go directly to the care of the animals to cover the cost of veterinary care, food and litter.

Last night's emergency rescue:

We were contacted by some caring folks in Woodside, Queens. They were desperate to help this cat that they'd been feeding for several years with his 2 buddies. Recently, they'd been confronted by a hostile individual who threatened them and the cats, who were living in a locked, unkempt public space along a highway. Sadly, soon after, the other 2 cats disappeared without a trace, and this one, "ANGEL" , had become very frightened and skittish, and wasn't eating much. They were extremely concerned for his safety.
Two of our wonderful volunteers, Sonia Izak & Michael Demcio , gathered their gear along with some ladders, to access the restricted area, and saved the day!
Angel is now safe and out of harms way. It's a good thing too, because immediately after trapping, it was clear that Angel was in need of immediate medical attention.
Angel went straight to our vet first thing this morning.
He has a large abscess on his face & a broken tooth, which caused him to have difficulty eating.
For now, he is at the vet for a full work up and hopefully he won't have any major issues.
We are thankful we were able to get him out of that dangerous environment.
Without your donations & our incredible volunteers, we would never be able to perform these life changing rescues.
Thank you for your support.

SOCIALIZERS NEEDED!
We are looking for volunteers that would be willing to foster and socialize these kittens. The 4 kittens are approximately 5-7 months old and are fully vetted (FIV and FeLV negative). They could be split up into smaller groups or singles.
Our vet is located in Great Neck. Fosters must be able to transport to our vet for any veterinary needs.

If you are interested in fostering and socializing any of these kittens, please email [email protected]

UPDATE 1/31/2025:

Fury was discharged today and his colony feeder is now fostering him. Temp is now normal, drain was pulled and it's draining on it's own. Biopsy in mouth is not back yet. He's eating well and he's now neutered. Fury has been acting feral at our vet but we do think he might become a social kitty when he calms down. Today our vet said he's at least five years old. His medical bill so far is $1520. We sure could use donations toward his bill. Please wish him well. We will keep you posted on his recovery.

On a side note... we've often seen cats limping who actually have an abscess as opposed to a sprain. When an abscess goes too long untreated, it's life threatening and very costly to provide the medical care needed for recovery... many cats are then euthanized due to the expense. In other words, don't let a cat "limp" for too long without seeking medical care.

Fury was rescued yesterday and he has some recovering to do! 😦

He showed up about a month ago at a colony in Corona. Last night, his feeder saw that he was in trouble and fast forward... he is now in hospital. He has a deep infected gash full of pus behind his right ear and it's abscessed. This morning, he had a fever of 105 and he is on massive antibiotics with a drain in the wound. A suspicious spot in his mouth has been biopsied and we will have results later in the week. Blood-work will be back tomorrow. Fury is only about a year old. Prayers please for a full recovery and that he ultimately becomes a social and adoptable kitty. 🙏

Any size donations are very appreciated. This will be an expensive journey but well worth it. Thank you .

I'm PARKER. Remember me? Hellooooo?
WHEN WILL I FIND MY FOREVER HOME?! I'm 6 months old now!
I've been looking for so long for a very special human and a very special home.
I'm looking for a person that already has a kitty with FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) or someone with NO cats that would take in a special little fluff like me.
I probably won’t have nine lives, but I’ll gladly enjoy the one I've got!
I know there’s a lap out there with my name on it. I can tell you that I'm a super affectionate “purr machine”. I love to talk and I'm soooo playful. I'll make a great companion for your FeLV kitty! ______________________________________________________________________
Parker is located on the border of Queens and Long Island, NY.
We are looking for an experienced Foster or Adopter in the surrounding areas. Parker is male and born 6/28/2024.
Since he is FeLV positive, we will assist financially with future
medical expenses if needed.

My name is TONY POTATO!
I think I'm Ragdoll kitty, and have long hair and beautiful blue eyes, but I'm not very big. I'm about a year old and I'm as affectionate as they come. I'll follow you everywhere I purr like a motor boat! But here's the hitch... I'm considered SPECIAL NEEDS. I have Megaesophagus and will need some close medical monitoring and some special adjustments in positioning me for eating. It's not THAT big of a deal. I need to eat from a special fancy bowl. I need a FOSTER HOME or ADOPTER that lives in or around Queens/ Nassau County so that my medical care can continue at Great Neck Animal Hospital through Give Me Shelter Project. Can you please share my story? I'd love to find my very own forever home. I'm pretty irresistible. 💖

Tuxie Girl had her surgery today (amputation).
This is the cat that eluded rescuers for 11 days with a hunting trap attached to her foot.

The surgery went great. She is hospitalized, and they are monitoring her closely.
Thank you to Dr. Brian Rind and the wonderful caring staff of Great Neck Animal Hospital.

Thank you ALL for your prayers.

THANK YOU to all who donated on the various fundraisers for Tuxie Girl. We continue to need funds to cover her expenses. Reminder that all donations are matched through Wednesday, 1/15/25. Please continue to share.

We will keep you updated.
