Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Animal Rescue, Education and Advocacy

Changing the world one animal at a time. Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Many lives were saved.

is a 501(c)3 not for profit animal rescue, education and advocacy group in NYC. We believe that Each Animal Counts™ and are committed to changing the world, one animal at a time. Purpose:

Give Me Shelter Project strives to elevate the societal value of animal life through various activities including:
• Rescue and placement of unwanted animals
• Provision of necessary medical care
• Promoting tr

ap-neuter-return (TNR)
• Adoptions
• Support for and collaboration with individuals and other animal welfare organizations
• Education of the public on the importance of sterilization, basic animal care, humane treatment of animals, and the value of animals as an integral part of our society. History and Accomplishments:

Our story began in 2008 when we were part of a small group of independent rescuers who came together to rescue 88 cats from an eviction situation. Most of the cats were not friendly enough to be adopted. We searched and found placements far and wide (some cats were flown to a sanctuary in Arizona!). We undertook a similar rescue of 64 cats the following year. The scope of these rescues took an enormous toll on us physically, emotionally and financially. Many agencies advised us to turn the cats over to the local “kill” shelter. Instead, we felt compelled to consider the life of each individual cat and do all we could to protect that life. We were able to sleep at night knowing we made the right decision. Along the way, we rescued numerous other individual cats who found themselves in dire situations like Allison who was trapped in an abandoned building, and Becky who was blind and living on the street. Hobo was hit by a car and found on the side of the road with a broken arm. We now have a total of 44 cats in our care being fostered in several locations. Many would have been euthanized because the needed medical care was too expensive. Our Veterinarians saved a total of seven cats that had a deadly case of feline distemper. Many of these wonderful cats have been adopted into their forever homes. We have since rescued many more who are waiting for theirs. We have several cats with ongoing but treatable medical conditions. All donations go directly to the care of the animals to cover the cost of veterinary care, food and litter.

We are very thankful for all our friends, donors, and supporters.

🚨 WEEKEND RESCUE: Meet Marley (aka Bob Marley)! 🚨
Late last night, our rescue team saved this sweet boy from the streets of Jamaica, Queens.

One of our amazing volunteers spotted Marley on Friday night with a severe, infected facial injury that needed immediate medical attention. We knew we had to act fast!

On Saturday night, three of our dedicated rescue warriors set out on a mission. Fortunately, Marley wasn't hard to find, and our professional trappers secured him quickly and efficiently. And just in time! As soon as he was warm and comfortable in our vehicle, he began sneezing out chunks of pus and blood.

Marley is currently safe at our veterinarian, and we are awaiting a full diagnosis. We’ll keep you updated on his condition!

How you can help: Marley's emergency care will be costly. Please consider donating to help cover his medical bills and support future rescues.

Thank you!!

It's been a very rough couple of weeks for Macintosh & Fuji, our sweet "Apple" babies!
We rescued this adorable 10-week-old brother and sister pair just two weeks ago. They were tiny for their age and tested positive for every parasite imaginable. Due to the massive parasitic invasion, they struggled to gain weight, and Macintosh, in particular, was worryingly small and failed to thrive for a while.
We were finally seeing the scale numbers start to increase after almost two weeks of nutritious meals when suddenly on Friday night, first Macintosh, and then Fuji, started open-mouth breathing—an emergency sign in cats! 🙀 *video in comments

We rushed them to the ER vet late Friday night! After exams and x-rays, it was determined that their little bodies were reacting to the massive, painful evacuation of the multitude of worms inside them. They were released with pain medication to help with the extreme discomfort.
We've been monitoring them closely, and they seem to be improving so far. These tiny Apple babies are not out of the woods yet, but we're keeping our fingers crossed they are finally on the road to recovery! 🤞
Please send some good vibes and healing thoughts their way! ❤️

Meet Scarlett!! She is 15 years young and so very sweet and affectionate 🤗 Nothing makes her happier than a good scratch while snacking on her treats and a cozy nap in the sunshine on the couch. She has diabetes that has been managed for years with a ONCE a day insulin injection. She is a healthy girl and her human papa went into rehab and won’t be coming home. She had been living by herself in the apartment with someone stopping in daily BUT that was lonely and she is now boarding at our vet. We will offer to assist the adopter lucky enough to have her with medical expenses! Would you like to meet her this Saturday at Pet Smart in New Hyde Park? She will be there at our adoption event from 12-4. Warning: This sweetheart will steal your heart 💜

Happy Veterans Day!
