Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Animal Rescue, Education and Advocacy

Changing the world one animal at a time. Give Me Shelter Project, Inc. Many lives were saved.

is a 501(c)3 not for profit animal rescue, education and advocacy group in NYC. We believe that Each Animal Counts™ and are committed to changing the world, one animal at a time. Purpose:

Give Me Shelter Project strives to elevate the societal value of animal life through various activities including:
• Rescue and placement of unwanted animals
• Provision of necessary medical care
• Promoting tr

ap-neuter-return (TNR)
• Adoptions
• Support for and collaboration with individuals and other animal welfare organizations
• Education of the public on the importance of sterilization, basic animal care, humane treatment of animals, and the value of animals as an integral part of our society. History and Accomplishments:

Our story began in 2008 when we were part of a small group of independent rescuers who came together to rescue 88 cats from an eviction situation. Most of the cats were not friendly enough to be adopted. We searched and found placements far and wide (some cats were flown to a sanctuary in Arizona!). We undertook a similar rescue of 64 cats the following year. The scope of these rescues took an enormous toll on us physically, emotionally and financially. Many agencies advised us to turn the cats over to the local “kill” shelter. Instead, we felt compelled to consider the life of each individual cat and do all we could to protect that life. We were able to sleep at night knowing we made the right decision. Along the way, we rescued numerous other individual cats who found themselves in dire situations like Allison who was trapped in an abandoned building, and Becky who was blind and living on the street. Hobo was hit by a car and found on the side of the road with a broken arm. We now have a total of 44 cats in our care being fostered in several locations. Many would have been euthanized because the needed medical care was too expensive. Our Veterinarians saved a total of seven cats that had a deadly case of feline distemper. Many of these wonderful cats have been adopted into their forever homes. We have since rescued many more who are waiting for theirs. We have several cats with ongoing but treatable medical conditions. All donations go directly to the care of the animals to cover the cost of veterinary care, food and litter.

No break in rescues! No pun intended 😹

This one year old had been running around on three legs for a couple of weeks. We were notified of his plight, but it took a few days to trap him. After our vet examined him & x-rays taken, Tiny was diagnosed with a segmental femural shaft fracture (meaning his femur has 2 breaks in the middle portion of the bone). Yesterday, he went in for his surgery and unfortunately due to this being an old break, he was not a candidate. The vet recommended that we monitor to see how much he is using the leg. Then a decision will be made between amputation and re-breaking to correct the fracture.

Please consider donating towards the medical care Tiny has already received, as well as future medical expenses we're expecting to have for him 🐾🩵

We lead by example. We should be teaching our children that all lives matter and are not disposable. Our children are our future and what a sad world we are going to be living in if this lack of compassion continues.

Today we got a very disturbing phone call from one of our volunteers. Upon leaving work, she noticed a young boy holding a cat in his arms with his father by his side. Concerned that the cat may get away, she approached offering help. To her dismay, they were on their way to abandon their beloved pet in a local park due to the son's allergies. She immediately intervened... Meet Garfield, our newest GMSP cat, a super friendly 1-year old.

While you may think placing your indoor cat outside is the best option, in all reality he/she would be destined for a slow and painful death. Parenting is hard. However, it is your responsibility to teach your children right from wrong.

Thank you, Janet Nunez, for saving this sweet boy.

Oliver is a hot mess!

A couple of months ago, his feeder noticed him limping and walking on three legs. Unfortunately, finding help was difficult. In desperation, she started looking for veterinary resources outside of her county and we responded to her email plea for help.

Oliver is emaciated, dehydrated and has multiple bite wounds up and down his entire leg. The wounds were abscessed with the whole leg swollen from cellulitis and he had a 104.8 fever. Oliver has been hospitalized at our vet on IV fluids and antibiotics. His bloodwork showed that he's anemic and as expected, his white blood cell count is elevated. His wounds were surgically debrided, flushed and a drain was inserted.

Due to the length of time Oliver suffered from his injury, he will never be able to completely bend his leg or walk correctly again. Since it is unsafe for him to live outside with his disabilities his feeder has agreed to keep him inside.

Please consider donating to Oliver’s care. His medical expenses have reached $1200 with more expected. Please keep Oliver in your prayers and please share to raise awareness about the plight of community cats. THANK YOU!

Hua-Hua's story is a reminder of if you SEE something DO something!!!

The life of a community cat can be overwhelmingly heartbreaking & rewarding all at the same time. They are equally as important as our own pets, yet not viewed that way by many. Ultimately, our hearts go out to them even more because of the daily struggles they have to endure to just survive not even thrive. They are ignored, stigmatized, chased away, & get physically abused. They are not getting annual check-ups, they are exposed to parasites & sickness, some aren't able to eat everyday since they have to find their own food source, & even death 😔 They live in constant survival mode with all forms of danger surrounding them living in a city that has very limited resources to utilize when help is so desperately needed. In knowing this, we try to assist when an injured/sick community cat needs help, but the cats need your help too 🐾💜

Hua-Hua's story is unknown...Where she started her life? Was she always a neighborhood cat? Was she owned at one point & then dumped or got lost?....Many questions we'll never know the answers to. What we know is that she was fed, cared for, & loved by a few neighbors when she arrived already tnr'd around 3 years ago. About 3 months ago, they noticed her face starting to look swollen. With the lack of community education & resources, they continued to take care of her daily needs not realizing what she had brewing in her body 😔

Her story for us started when we received a plea for help from a good samaritan, Rose Lennon who saw something wrong & immediately became a voice for one our voiceless. Despite not even being Hua-Hua's caretaker, she stepped in to reach out to her community for help where most would turn a blind eye. For 3 weeks, she made multiple phone calls & put up posts asking for help for an animal with what appeared to be a horrific injury on her face. Once alerted to this situation by us & seeing the severity of her injury, Linda Marelli-Romanelli immediately started the trapping process. Less than 36 hours later, Linda had her safely trapped & assessed her condition. Although half of her face was missing with maggots actively moving around, she was stable to be triaged to see our vet vs rushing her to an er. Hua-Hua was then transported by Michael Demcio to Merrie Gordon

We can not begin to thank Merrie for how she cared for Hua-Hua despite her being not very handleable. She flushed her wound, was able to carefully remove some of the flystrike & maggots, & put capstar in her food to kill the parasites eating away on & in her. The words "parts of her face are falling off" will resonate with us, knowing how much pain she had to have been in yet was otherwise acting normal & eating as best as she could. Again her resilience was astounding!

We all felt what our vet confirmed, this wasn't an injury. Hua-Hua had end stage cancer that erupted from the inside out. It was on both sides. She was not woken up from sedation. The decision was made to humanely euthanize 😔💔 She was loved by her caretakers & Rose, who started taking care of her in her last weeks, that lead to her gaining a dignified passing & being set free of the pain she was enduring. Merrie stayed with her during this time so she was not alone when she crossed to rainbow bridge. It takes a village & we at Give Me Shelter Project can not thank our volunteers & the community enough for all they do, especially Merrie; her level of compassion & empathy surpasses most 💜

RIP Hua-Hua may you be remembered how you were & your story be a reminder that if you see something, do something, even if it's to get help. PLEASE BE THEIR VOICE 🕊💜

Please consider donating to help us continue to help them. Any amount is greatly appreciated & all donations go directly to their care 🐾💜

Update 8/2/24:
Grammy has crossed over the rainbow bridge 😔💔 Though this was not the outcome we all desired, this was the best decision for her. Her suffering has ended, but her story will stay with us. Sometimes the role we play is only to bring peace in a loving & dignified manner. Grammy was let down through her life as a community cat, as most sadly are. However in the end, she was given affection, shown compassion, & held until her last breathe. We are grateful to have such an incredibly dedicated team of volunteers that once alerted to her dire need of help immediately responded. A special thanks to Holly, for opening her home to her to enable us to immediately get her to safety; to Merrie Gordon for being ready to take her home for hospice, but then instead spent the day with her & her last moments, staying with her until her heart was beating no more; to Michael Demcio & Terry for spending time with her giving her comfort in the short time she was with us; to all those who donated & shared her post; & to the wonderful staff at our vet's office who went over & beyond giving her the critical care she needed. Ultimately, our decision was based on what was best for her quality of life & in her condition her frail little body had been through too much 😔💔

If we are to take a lesson from this horrific story of Grammy, it's to not wait in getting help for these community cats. Reach out to local vets, shelters, rescues, & social media for help. Do not give up because help isn't found immediately. Keep trying & keep posting; sometimes YOU are the only one that can help. Her suffering did not have to go on for this long 😔 We are a small but strong community that together can & do make the difference 🐾💜

UPDATE 8/1/24: This sweet senior community cat will never have to spend another night on the streets where she has endured horrific unknown traumas. A call was received about an outdoor cat, that was in need of medical attention, for injuries that were claimed to be about a month old. When she was brought to us, we noted BOTH eyes looking bad, tongue hanging out, dehydrated, VERY skinny (4 1/4 lbs), & a hole in her rear right leg near the foot that had maggots. She has multiple old broken bones in her body, her facial bones broken, her jaw broken with a small portion frozen open with her tongue hanging out, a dislocated hip with fractured pelvis, & a possible bullet or bb of some sorts lodged in her skull.

We've named her Grammy & the history given to us isn't matching the x-rays or doctor's findings. So, how long this sweet 10 year old has endured these injuries is unknown, but not a month. Significantly longer, to where the fractured bones had already fused. Her one eye we are unsure of the extent of her vision & in her other eye, she is blind. Her tongue being stuck out has allowed her to be able to eat some foods. Now, she is receiving the consistency that she can actually ingest & is trying her hardest to eat. She welcomes affection & enjoys being pet. Her resilience has everyone involved stunned & baffled, but we've come to a crossroads where the decision has to be made to her quality of life & her level of suffering, regardless of her desire to eat. This decision is not being made lightly & we are awaiting the remaining diagnostic testing to come in. We do not want this cat to just exist, so we are leaning towards the right decision for her quality of life. We ask that comments are refrained as to individual opinions regarding her medical care. This is a very emotional decision that is being made once all information is in. Please keep Grammy in your thoughts & prayers 🙏 Donations are greatly appreciated & we will make sure she has the dignity she has always deserved 🐾

Safe....stay tuned for details.....

What a transformation in just 24 hours!
Fava has been unhappy and closed off while being in the store. Last night she went to a home for a vacation for 4 weeks. In just 24 hours she looks like a completely different cat. It is our hope she will learn to relax around people and trust them so she will eventually get adopted. She will need someone with lots of patience to adopt her. We would love for her, not To have to come back to the store when her four weeks is up. I am so happy that she is with such a wonderful family who can foster her for the time being. If you are interested in adopting Fava please visit our website Give Me Shelter Project, and fill out an application.
Thank you so much 😻

Update:
Crimson and Clover have finally been adopted and are in their furever home😻We wish them all the best in their new home.

Crimson and Clover are beautiful cats about a year old. They have been with us since February and really need a home with more space to play and patient people to love them. These 2 have been overlooked many times because they are shy and nervous around people. Clover loves to play with wand toys and both of them like lasers. Slow petting is allowed and Crimson enjoys being brushed. We would love to see them get adopted so they can experience what it is like to be with a family and learn to trust . Experienced adopter needed and I would suggest no young children. If you would like to meet them they are at Petsmart in New Hyde Park and will be at our adoption event Saturday July 20 from 12-4 at Petsmart in New Hyde Park. Message us for any questions and fill out an application on our website.
Thank you 🐈
