Bean is a science cat. She has to explore everything up close and personal. So today, she had to explore my powdered donuts. first with her head, then her face, then her tongue and eventually she grabbed on with both hands.

One of the most challenging things about being neurodivergent in the animal rescue space is having to deal with other volunteers who aren’t neuro spicy.

Not long ago, I was accused of trying to take over an entire rescue group. I had volunteered to manage their social media, and then when they accepted my offer, I updated my profile to reflect that I was one of their social media managers. I got a call from the Director asking who I thought I was, calling myself a manager? Didn’t I know that there are people who have been with the rescue for years who don’t get to call themselves managers?

It didn’t matter that the context of the work involves MANAGING social media, including posting, responding, monitoring, etc. No one thought to ask why, they just jumped to making invalid assumptions about my motivations. When I explained, I was told that I couldn’t call myself a social media manager, but I could be a social media “coordinator” instead.

The thing is, roles have names. And those names have specific meanings and contexts that describe the work being done. Deciding to change what a thing is called to placate someone’s ego, especially in a volunteer organization, makes about as much sense as putting pants on a duck, and is way less funny.

I’ve been managing social media accounts for at least 15 years. I’ve been managing online communities for just about as long. I’ve been doing both as my primary job for more than 5 years. None of that kind of “management” involves being anybody’s direct supervisor.

In a funny twist, within a few months of being accused of trying to be a “manager” within the rescue, I was hired as a digital marketing manager full time… and that \is\ a management role.
