71 Seconds of Zen
71 seconds of Zen… 🐝🌺🐝🌺🐝This large stand of Monarda didyma ‘Raspberry Wine’ (bee balm / bergamot), started with one four inch pot planted many years ago. It comes back reliably every year in this high elevation SW Portland garden even tho it gets blasted by freezing winds from the east. I grow the native variety Monarda fistulosa in the front garden. It’s even taller and has lovely pale purple flowers.

Sound on for birdsong and my creaky voice.
I created this garden nearly 20 years ago (not ten as I said in the video) and still get to tend to it many months of the year. It overlooks 2 mountains and Portland to the north and east. Over the years it has become a haven to bees and birds. Eagles and hawks often fly overhead. Many of the polllinator friendly plants start blooming in full force in late June and continue until frost. I’ve let the feverfew grow with abandon because it protects other plants from the wild rabbits who also live here. Soon the Calaminta, Agastache and Zauschneria will come into bloom.
I was planting a new “Just Joey” rose from Heirloom Roses, (all the roses in this garden are from Heirloom). #suzinnweissgarden #allorganic #pollinatorgarden

Visiting a garden I created last summer.
I stopped by this garden design/installation I created last year. I hadn’t seen it since I came over in late February to assess winter ice storm damage. There were some losses but most of the perennials have returned. There’s always room for (lots) more plants but I’m happy with how things are growing. 💚
A short stroll with birdsong…
Take a short stroll through my garden. The Philadelphus is in full bloom and the scent is intoxicating. The seat of heaven is calling… 💚🤍💚 sound on for birdsong.

Springing with birdsong. 🔈on 🌹
Take a short stroll through my garden. The heirloom roses are starting to bloom and their scent is divine. I’m still assessing damage from the January storm but some perennials are awol or showing up later than usual. Grateful for all of them.

As usual, late winter and spring are my busiest time of the year work wise, so I haven’t been posting much. But here are some snippets from my garden. 💚

Breakfast with birdies

Caught these to going at in my garden. I assume that the huge bumbler is a queen.

My peaceable paradise.
Birdbath hack: before you dispose of sturdy garden perennial waste assess to see if they would make good landing pads for birds gathering at your birdbath. I use my tall oriental lily stalks. Their multiple stems are perfect for the job. I built a “cage” around the fountain with hollow copper pipe so I can stick the lily stalks into them for support.
Birds prefer to be near the bath first to make sure it’s a safe space so putting the birdbath close to small trees and shrubs is helpful too.
In the backyard you can see the squirrel jungle gym I made with pruned limbs from my smoke bush and old lilacs. I feed the squirrels filberts and so they leave the shelled sunflower seeds for the birds. 🕊️🐿️
Sound on and zoom in! ‘Tis the season for the magical Cedar Waxwings to come feast on our Beauty Berry bush. The berries are usually ripe at Thanksgiving time and attract robins too.
Google Cedar Waxwings to see their gorgeous eyeliner and yellow tipped tail feathers (the origin of their common name). They have distinctive calls; a sighing whistle, and various trills. On foggy mornings I love hearing their soft flapping wings and gentle songs in the mist.
If you want to attract them they love berries. (Elderberry, Dogwood, Beauty Berry, Aronia, etc…). #suzinnweissgarden #cedarwaxwing #birds #birdsoforegon #songbirds #birdsofinstagram #beautyberry
