I'm a crane fly, commonly known as a giant mosquito. Due to the ignorance of many people, they took my life without me posing any danger. I don't suck blood, I'm not a vampire. Feeding on the nectar of flowers and helping with pollination, just doing my natural duty. Now that you know me, please don't kill me.

71 seconds of Zen… 🐝🌺🐝🌺🐝This large stand of Monarda didyma ‘Raspberry Wine’ (bee balm / bergamot), started with one four inch pot planted many years ago. It comes back reliably every year in this high elevation SW Portland garden even tho it gets blasted by freezing winds from the east. I grow the native variety Monarda fistulosa in the front garden. It’s even taller and has lovely pale purple flowers.

Sound on for birdsong and my creaky voice.
I created this garden nearly 20 years ago (not ten as I said in the video) and still get to tend to it many months of the year. It overlooks 2 mountains and Portland to the north and east. Over the years it has become a haven to bees and birds. Eagles and hawks often fly overhead. Many of the polllinator friendly plants start blooming in full force in late June and continue until frost. I’ve let the feverfew grow with abandon because it protects other plants from the wild rabbits who also live here. Soon the Calaminta, Agastache and Zauschneria will come into bloom.
I was planting a new “Just Joey” rose from Heirloom Roses, (all the roses in this garden are from Heirloom).

An informative and important post about those so called “wild flower” seed mixes.
In Portland, OR I shop at small, conscientious nurseries to find true native flower mixes.

A Great alternative!

I stopped by this garden design/installation I created last year. I hadn’t seen it since I came over in late February to assess winter ice storm damage. There were some losses but most of the perennials have returned. There’s always room for (lots) more plants but I’m happy with how things are growing. 💚

Take a short stroll through my garden. The Philadelphus is in full bloom and the scent is intoxicating. The seat of heaven is calling… 💚🤍💚 sound on for birdsong.

Take a short stroll through my garden. The heirloom roses are starting to bloom and their scent is divine. I’m still assessing damage from the January storm but some perennials are awol or showing up later than usual. Grateful for all of them.

Please don’t poison anything or anybody…

Meet Hobo. Hobo was eating bugs in a person's lawn, so they decided to call an exterminator. Pesticide was sprayed on the lawn and under the house. Six weeks later he was brought to us emaciated, lacking aggression and covered in ant bites. A few days of a nutritious diet, meds, and hydration has him up on his feet. Sadly it looks as though our smelly friend has some lasting neurological damage from the chemicals sprayed, and cannot walk or run without falling over. He can no longer hunt for food and would die if released. Skunks, birds, armadillo, possum and many others are at the mercy of those who spray toxic chemicals to kill bugs. When contemplating pest control, please think of Hobo and his friends that will die alongside those grubs and grasshoppers.

I’m seeing birds with symptoms of Salmonella in my NE Portland neighborhood. Please read this article and if you feed birds you should take down all your feeders and give them a deep clean. Don’t feed birds at all for awhile. They can fend for themselves naturally. Please share. Thanks!

Every winter we get reports of Pine Siskins affected by salmonella. Pine Siskins are a flocking bird that frequent feeders during this season.

A great excuse to go for a hike!

A great excuse to go for a hike!

1. Go to the Oregon forest . Bring a pinecone home 🏡
2. Put the cone in a pot with some soil - so that most of it stands out.
3. Every day water it with a small amount of water, as excess water makes the cones rot.
4. After some time, a tiny tree will appear.
5. Congratulations - you just started oxygen production and you have a piece of forest in your own home. 🌲

THE DAILY BEE
Beau is a Life Guard in his local garden. This is an extremely important job, as *some* farmers just willy-nilly spray their gardens when watering, with no regard for poor, mostly defenseless little flying creatures. Some of these creatures won't make it, but thanks to the efforts of Life Guards like Beau, most will survive the deluge.
Here you can see Beau, wet and exhausted, shortly after saving another bee from drowning in a puddle.
When he gets home in the evenings, Beau watches old, classic cartoons while snacking on extra buttery popcorn.

Scientists recorded the popping noises that plants make in response to stresses like dehydration or a cut.

This is literally nuts!

Exterminators in the North Bay were recently met with a nutty surprise during a call to a home in the wine country community of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County: more than 700 pounds of acorns in the walls stacked up about 20 feet from floor to attic.

Advice from Backyard Bird Shop

My peaceable paradise.
Birdbath hack: before you dispose of sturdy garden perennial waste assess to see if they would make good landing pads for birds gathering at your birdbath. I use my tall oriental lily stalks. Their multiple stems are perfect for the job. I built a “cage” around the fountain with hollow copper pipe so I can stick the lily stalks into them for support.
Birds prefer to be near the bath first to make sure it’s a safe space so putting the birdbath close to small trees and shrubs is helpful too.
In the backyard you can see the squirrel jungle gym I made with pruned limbs from my smoke bush and old lilacs. I feed the squirrels filberts and so they leave the shelled sunflower seeds for the birds. 🕊️🐿️

Sound on and zoom in! ‘Tis the season for the magical Cedar Waxwings to come feast on our Beauty Berry bush. The berries are usually ripe at Thanksgiving time and attract robins too.
Google Cedar Waxwings to see their gorgeous eyeliner and yellow tipped tail feathers (the origin of their common name). They have distinctive calls; a sighing whistle, and various trills. On foggy mornings I love hearing their soft flapping wings and gentle songs in the mist.
If you want to attract them they love berries. (Elderberry, Dogwood, Beauty Berry, Aronia, etc…).

An Important Read!

Rotting pumpkins and other holiday waste thrown into landfill contribute to greenhouse gases – but there are many ways our lanterns can live on.
