I know it sounds weird coming from a dog trainer.

But I do not love the phrase dog walk.

It makes the whole thing feel like it has to be about the dog performing well.

That is where people start getting stressed.

Instead, go for a walk together.

Let it be simple.

Let it be low pressure.

You will still fulfil your dog, but you will enjoy it more too.

And if you are working on training, that makes a massive difference.

‼️ Most owners with reactive dogs misunderstand punishment ‼️

I get why.

The word feels heavy.

People hear it and think fear, force, and dogs living under a dictatorship.

But that is not what good training should look like.

Punishment simply means reducing the chance of a behaviour happening again.

That matters when you are dealing with lunging, barking, snapping, or aggression.

Because if we only focus on teaching new behaviours, but never reduce the old ones, the dog still has that behaviour available.

That is why so many owners get stuck in the snakes and ladders pattern.

One good walk.

One bad moment.

Back to square one.

Good training needs both sides.

Build the behaviour you want.

Reduce the behaviour you do not want.

The issue is not punishment.

The issue is trainers using it badly and calling it training.

If your dog is reactive and you feel stuck in the same cycle, message me the word HELP.

This is so scary and why it becomes headline news!!

‼️ As a dog trainer, I won’t take every case. ‼️

Not because I don’t want to help.

Because sometimes the risk is too high.

Two dogs already showing serious aggression.

Then a Malinois puppy added into the mix.

That is not just a training issue.

That is a management issue.

A safety issue.

And a decision-making issue.

You cannot keep adding dogs into a home that is already struggling.

Especially when there are children involved.

Training only works when the owner is ready to be consistent.

If they are not, everyone is at risk.

The dogs included.

Sometimes the best thing a trainer can do is walk away and tell the truth.

If your dog only comes back when they feel like it, they do not have a recall yet.

This is where the long line comes in.

It gives your dog freedom to sniff, move away and make choices.

But it also stops them rehearsing the wrong one.

Every time you call your dog and they ignore you, they learn that recall is optional.

Every time you call them and the long line helps you follow through, they learn that coming back is the only answer.

That is how you build consistency.

Not by rushing them off lead and hoping for the best.

But by stacking successful reps until the habit is solid.

Freedom comes after reliability.

Not before it.

Your dog isn’t ignoring you. They’re just confused.

Think about it.

You say “down” when you want them off the sofa.
Then you say “down” when you want them to lie down.

That’s two completely different things with the same word.

Your dog did exactly what you asked. You just asked for the wrong thing.

It’s not defiance. It’s not stubbornness. It’s a communication gap.

Pick one word for one thing. Stick to it. Be boring with it.

“Off” means get off the furniture.
“Down” means lie down.

Simple. Clear. No confusion.

Your dog wants to get it right. Give them a fair chance.

Your dog isn’t ignoring you. They just don’t understand what you want.

Think about it. If someone shouted random instructions at you, you’d get confused too. Your dog feels the exact same way when you repeat commands over and over.

They need clear communication. That means breaking it down into four simple steps.

First is their name. This is the alert. It tells them to pay attention.

Second is the command. This tells them exactly what you need them to do.

Third is the marker. This times the behaviour perfectly so they know they got it right.

Fourth is the reward. This motivates them to do it again next time.

Skip any of these steps and you’re just making noise.

Your puppy doesn’t have a distraction problem.

You have a leadership problem.

And that’s not me having a go. Nobody tells you this when you bring a puppy home. You’re just expected to figure it out.

But here’s the thing. Your puppy is always going to find the world more interesting than you unless you teach him that you’re worth paying attention to.

That’s what this is about.

Every time he checks back in with me on that walk, I mark it and reward it. I’m building the habit of him choosing me over everything else around him. Over and over again.

That’s real leadership. Not being strict. Not being dominant. Just being worth following.

Start doing this on every walk and watch how quickly he starts looking to you instead of dragging you towards everything he sees.

DM me PUPPY and I’ll show you exactly where to start.

This is a client dog halfway through our session today. Some kids asked to give him a stroke and he was absolutely buzzing about it.

You cannot fake that level of happiness. Seeing a dog this relaxed and joyful in a busy park is the best part of the job.

If you want to enjoy your walks again without the stress drop me a message.

Stop asking your reactive dog to sit when another dog walks past. I see this daily and it’s making the problem worse.

When you ask a reactive dog to sit in the presence of a trigger, you’re creating a fizzy pop bottle effect. They get tight, frustrated, and the pressure builds. When you take the lid off, they go boom.

They will tend to react more, not less. Keep them moving instead.

Have you been told to make your dog sit? Let me know in the comments.
