"Don't be Cruel!" animal rescue was founded and formed in 2007 to help furkids in need and danger. I know that doesn't sound like a lot. NO ROOM!

Don't Be Cruel Animal and Sanctuary was started over 14 years ago by my family and I when we realized the urgent need for one. Over these few years we have helped to save and place over 1100 animals, mainly cats and dogs, with a few horses, rabbits, and even a couple of pigs. But considering that we do this at our home with virtually no funding except our own and a few donations now and then, I fe

el as if we've done an excellent job. But unfortunately, we are turning them away daily. But we're still here and not planning on going anywhere,except maybe to relocate to a larger facility if funds ever permit. We take all breeds, both large and small, ranging from cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, and have even rescued 2 horses which I had to board. We do our best to accomodate the animals in our facility even if that means sharing our house when it's cold, cooking for them when we're low on food, and pawning whatever we have to when a vet is needed. As I've been an active animal activist for over 25 years and have worked in a variety of jobs related to animals including dog grooming for almost 30, I am equipped to handle almost any emergency that arises. With the help of the local police department and a few friends in low places(if you know what I mean) we have helped to put an end to 2 fighting rings and have rehabilitated several pit bulls. We currently have 16. We don't charge a fortune to adopt our animals but we have an extensive application that was drawn up by an attorney and we do check all references and as much background as possible. We also do follow up phone calls and home visits if we deem necessary after the animal is placed. This is by no means a large facility, but an extremely needed rescue and Sanctuary. We have several seniors and special needs in our care. We love them all. These furkids are our family and we protect our family.

Marion County SC Animal Slelter plea:

We have had 6 dogs leave for foster , we have a rescue group coming tomorrow morning to move dogs to boarding for us, after they take who they can we will be reaching out to people on this post for however many we have left over. If you want to help with storm prep we will be here 8am if it starts storming bad we will close early to get our staff home safely. 10 am transport will be here and we can use all the help we can get loading dogs

We are about to be hit with a hurricane.
We need rescues that can take our dogs now.
We need fosters who can house our dogs inside through the storm even if we can put them in ur garage in crates.

WE HAVE 30+ DOGS OUTSIDE !

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO DO RESCUE?

Your rescue "kit" should include:
A heart of gold to accept those creatures that don't measure up as "perfect" in the eyes of the rest of the world.
The people skills of a salesperson. . . to convince those that are looking for perfection that they will find it in a rescue dog if they are willing to look a little deeper.
A heart of steel to be able to say no when there just isn't any more room for just one more dog.
The knowledge that you can't save them all.
The ability to smile and speak rationally when the 10th person for the day says "I don't want this stupid dog anymore. . . take him or I am gonna shoot him."
Some medical knowledge. . . or your rescue vet bill will be bigger than the national debt.
The fine art of fund raising. . . so your vet bill can be reduced to just under the size of the national debt.
Patience for: breeders who don't care, won't help, turn their backs and say it's not their problem.
Patience for: dogs that were incorrectly placed and come to rescue with so much excess baggage that you think they will never be adoptable.
Patience for: owners who want a quick fix.
Patience for: a world that no longer looks at life as a gift and the lives that we create as breeders as nothing short of miracles.
A sense of humor. . . because sometimes a smile on your face is the only way to hide the agony and turmoil in your heart.
A wife/husband with housekeeping skills that are so outstanding that they could be highlighted in Good Housekeeping Magazine. . . so you can devote your time to all the rescues and be secure in the knowledge that the local Board of Health will not condemn your house.
Personal dogs that will tolerate the never ending stream of four legged orphans, waifs and street urchins that will start arriving the moment you say. . . "I have room."
Children that like being the "token" child to socialize every dog that comes thru the door. . . being able to say "good with kids" is a real selling point.
Magician skills so you can change anything that comes thru the door, from black tri male to long tail and brown eyes, into blue merle female, good with kids, housebroke, crate trained and obedience trained.
The ability to face the paperwork head-on and deal with it. . . or someone you can send it to and say. . . "Here, do something with this mess!"
Grooming skills for those ugly ducklings waiting for their chance to be a swan. . . with a little help from you.
I could go on but you probably get the picture. . . . None of us have all of these things but we all know that the business of rescue is a team effort. Each of us contribute what we can as a team member. Some of us cannot handle the dogs [or cats or birds or horses or rabbits or . . . ], but . . . there are other things that must be done.

Some only want to work with the dogs [themselves, or the cats or . . . ] . . . so. . . leave the paperwork to those that like it. No matter what your situation is. . . it is your willingness to help that is important.

Desperately in need of a little help for a couple bags of Pedigree dog food, a box of milk bones if possible and a bag of cat food. Have puppy food, food for the special needs and seniors. I just fed the last of the pedigree and still have two more to feed this morning. Along with the kitties. Any Elvis fans out there? I have a signed copy of Me and Elvis dated 1988 written and signed by Charlie Hodges. I’ve had it for about 18 years. It’s in great shape no pages torn or even earmarked. There’s only two that I could find that was signed. One sold on Etsy for over 600 and one on ebay for 372.00. Funds are going to the furkids and my water bill. Asking 250.00. The first four picks are the actual book and the last two are screenshots of the one on ebay. I hate parting witb it adter all these years but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Lol. Desperately in need of funds for food, for my crew, cleaning supplies, preventatives,etc. We’ve been barely getting by for so long that I just have no choice. Hey rescues we just got a little yellow lab mix off highway!! We can't keep him. Very sweet! Looks like he was just dumped because he was wa,lying right in front of speeding cars ! I need help for him! Asap. No pics yet.

Both Cassie and Penny were Louisiana throwaways. Tossed aside in two rural shelters that thankfully have heart but no resources and little to no help to save the furkids that they try to save. Cassie and her kids came to me 1.5 years ago from OPAS in West Monroe La. And Penny just recently from over by Deritter La. Jeff Kottler and his wife Clarissa added Cassie to their family last year. And Jeff offered to drive to La and pick up Penny and Bo which he did. Penny went to Foster in Chattanooga area but wasn’t meant to be. So Jeff offered to pick her up and return her to me. But that didn’t happen. Penny made it Jeff’s and spent the night and the rest as we say is history. This just shows you why I always say that everything happens for a reason. These two La gals have it made in the shade. Best homes and best family. So when you think about stepping up to help any rescue, shelter, etc take that Leap! You just never know what lies in store for you. Be that lifeline that could change so many lives! It’s so worth it. Just ask Jeff, Clarissa, Penny, Cassie or myself. We’ll tell ya or better yet this awesome video will show you.
