📌 E-line artefacts

👉 The presence of air in the subcutaneous tissue generates the same types of artefacts that are observed during lung ultrasound examination:
☑️horizontal A-line artefacts
and/or
☑️ vertical B-line artefacts, which in the case of subcutaneous emphysema are called E-line artefacts (E for emphysema)

👉E-line artefacts, unlike B-line artifacts, begin at the level of the chest, not the pleura. E-line artifacts are well-defined and also cause the A-line to be invisible, so they can be confused with true B-lines.

👉 The presence of air in the subcutaneous tissue prevents imaging of deeper tissues

👉they are vertical hyperechogenic comet tail artifacts
👉similar to lines B arise from pleura line, however are much shorter
👉Z-lines are usually slightly longer than I-lines
👉currently have no clinical significance
👉I-line artifacts look like needles

👉C-line artefacts are vertical hyperechogenic lines type „comet tail”
👉similar to lines B but they do not arise from the pleural line but from the top of the lesion - consolidation area or pleural-related focal lesion

📌B-line artefacts

👉B- line artefacts (ultrasound lung comets) are defined as a vertical artefacts that arise from the pleural line
👉extend to the depth of the image without decreasing in intensity move synchronously with lung sliding
👉do not appear together with lines A
👉they arise due to the presence of a small amount of fluid between the pleura and the presence of a surfactant in the alveoli
👉B-lines (up to two) can be seen in normal lungs
👉they are considered significant if three or more B-lines are seen in a single image between two ribs

📌 Sliding sign

👉Lung sliding is a to-and-fro movement between two pleural layers (at the pleural line) that occurs during respiration

👉 A-line artefacts without sliding may indicate:
- free air in the pleural space (pneumothorax)
- fluid in the pleural space (pleural effusion)
- pleural adhesions - when the pleura are firmly adherent to each other (pneumonia complicated by adhesions)

📌A-LINE ARTEFACTS

👉A- line artefacts are defined as hyperechogenic, repetitive horizontal artefacts arising from the pleural line
👉 they are generated by subpleural air, which blocks the propagation of the ultrasound beam
👉 A-lines indicate gas (physiological or free)
👉 the distance between A-lines is almost the same as the distance between the skin surface and the pleural line

Why TUS?

👉The changes observed during ultrasound are reflected in post-mortem or slaughterhouse examination
👉Ultrasonography helps not only to identify cases of pneumonia, but also to determine the area of the changed lung tissue, the severity of the disease, and most importantly, ultrasound is a significant tool in assessing the effectiveness of the therapeutic process
👉The advantage of ultrasonography is its ease of use and short examination time
👉The possibility of using a probe that is intended for reproduction examinations

Liver abscesses 🐮

✍️ Liver abscesses are generally a sequela to ruminal acidosis and rumenitis in cattle fed diets high in readily-fermentable carbohydrates and low in roughages; thus, the term "acidosis-rumenitis-liver abscess complex."
✍️Liver abscesses in calves are usually a complication of umbilical infection!!!!!

Liver abscesses are usually visible as limited structural changes located in the normal parenchyma. Their ultrasound image is variable, depends on the content of the abscess and may be anechoic, hypoechoic, hyperechoic or mixed (heteroechoic). In some cases, the contents of the abscess are isoechoic, making it difficult to distinguish it from normal liver structure.

Chronic fasciolosis in cattle

Calcification of the bile ducts occurs most often as a result of chronic fasciolosis.
The altered ducts are intensely hyperechogenic and are accompanied by a clear acoustic shadow.
In the cross-section, the calcified bile ducts are ring-shaped, while in the longitudinal cross-section they are visible as a hyperechogenic tubular structure

Focal steatosis of the liver

In rare cases, fat in the liver accumulates unevenly and forms single or multiple foci of various sizes. Focal steatosis appears as a solid, hyperechoic, homogeneous, well-defined area of the liver parenchyma that does not cause displacement or change in the course of vessels. The area of focal steatosis may change in size or disappear in subsequent ultrasound examinations

How does the ultrasound image of the liver change in Fatty Liver Syndrome?

📌Hepatic lipidosis results in :

👉increased hepatic size
👉 rounding of liver margins
👉 increase of coarseness of echoes
👉 increase of echogenicity of the liver parenchyma near the abdominal wall
👉 weakening of echo as distance increases from abdominal wall (deep attenuation)
👉 poor or no visualization of hepatic vessels
