Just a little update

The waiting list for Mirkwood Rattery, Mimble Rattery, Azarath Rattery and Kirkyard Rats is closed for now.
This is due to the sheer amount of pet homes we have to cater for.
We can’t always predict Mother Nature and currently don’t have the capacity to accept any more applicants.
Our current waiting times for kittens is now 6-12 months.

Please don’t worry if you’ve have applied before this post- we will still go over your application.

Waiting list applications will re-open later in the year, once we’ve had a chance to organise ourselves.

Thank you for understanding.

We recently caught Covid and all our rats were ill, with varying symptoms. We sadly lost 2 to severe head tilts (one young and one who had one most of his life) and we lost 3 to severe anorexia. The rest are now doing well. Please be careful everyone.

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron transmission from a symptomatically infected individual to two domestic rats.

Just to echo what Bayo here has said. If anyone has any of our rats up here, that's Mimble Rattery Filigree Rattery Wolvern, myself and of course Andromedas too. We will always take them back, no questions asked.

Why we can't give more precise waiting times. A long read, but if you're expecting rat kittens amazon primed the next day, here is why they aren't.

I thought I'd do a little write up on my, Mimble's and Filigree's litters from our last matings, done recently. We mate around the same times, in case things go wrong and foster mums are needed. They aren't always, but better safe than sorry.

Who we mated up (I'm using pet names for the sake of writing):

Azarath - Six, Yumi and Wendy
Filigree - HoneyLemon and Gogo
Mimble - Beans and Noli

If we say on average, each litter should be about 10 kittens. We should expect around 70 kittens from all of us. This is not how it went.

Six gave birth first, having 6 lovely kittens, not a bother. Then HoneyLemon, who had 8 (her first litter she had 15 and she won't be mated again) and sadly lost 1 at a week old (this happens). Then Gogo was due, sadly, Gogo ended up reabsorbing her litter at some point after day 20. Completely natural, though still a multitude of emotions happen with it. Next was Beans, who gave birth to a litter of 10. Beans damaged her knee at some point whilst on her babies (how in an Alaska, but things happen!). After we all had checked her out and supported Helen, she continued under careful watch, feeding her bubs. Beans started applying weight again after 2 days, much to our relief, however, she isn't out of the woods as she has started feeding the kittens over herself. Hopefully she rouperates in the coming days, but HoneyLemon and Six will take in fosters if Beans needs some support. Then Yumi. Yumi sadly got to day 23 and when checked after suspected birthing was done, there was blood in her nest, but no kittens. Yumi still felt "full" at this stage and sadly hadn't reabsorbed/birthed everything needed. After going on antibiotics and closely watching her for a few days, she did manage to pass/reabsorb everything else. She is currently doing well and back in her group. Then Noli went, Noli didn't look large at all and at times we weren't sure she was pregnant. She gave birth to a lovely 10 kittens. Lastly and most dramatically was Wendy. After a long birth and me thinking she was reabsorbing. Wendy gave birth to 1 alive kitten and 1 dead 1. Wendy herself was fine, she managed to get the first few feeds into the kitten, which is very important. We tried fostering some of Noli's kittens onto Wendy, in the hope it would keep Wendy's milk supply going. Unfortunately after 24hours all the kittens weren't fed. So I had to whisk the kittens up to Noli, sadly removing them from Wendy (this is soul destroying to do, but she will get over it with help of her cage mates and plenty of treats). All kittens have now been fed as of tonight (this just happened today). So we have our fingers crossed for Wendy's little Solo bub.

34 kittens we have (some are days old and aren't guaranteed to survive). Out of a possible of 70.

We will likely keep between us 12.

Buck homes that were used 2.

Potential to go back to breeders 8.

That's 12 kittens to pet homes.

12! That's 5 homes if pairs and less for trios.

When we say our waiting list can be between 3 and 12 month... this is why. Wolvern and Filigree last time, homed to 14 homes out of 3 litters. Mother nature, is just that.

Hi all, apologies for the lack of updates over the last few months.
The good new is that we have decided to reopen the waiting list, after closing it due to long wait times.
Please be aware, generally our wait times are 3 (but more often 6)-10 months, as we only breed a couple of times a year each and usually at the same time.
I share a waiting list with the other NFRS registered breeders in the North East;
Andromeda Rattery (currently on a small break)
Azarath Rattery
Filigree Rattery
Mimble Rattery
Wolvern Rattery
If you would like to apply to join the waiting list, please fill out the application form linked below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

I have a group of hand raised wild rats. 2 does and 6 bucks. They are rather small for their age, (so small, that they may need to be kept on their own) likely due to missing the first few days of feeding from mum. They've been with me from 4 days old, they're now 8 weeks old. They have been wormed, had ivermectin twice and will be treated with Doxy before leaving. Wild rats are slightly different to their domesticated counterparts, they are good chewers, need enriching and can be flighty. Though these guys are extremely good with handling, compared to the last lot of wild rats I had, and actively seek out my attention, they still are wary of open spaces.

If anyone would like further information or are thinking about owning some wild rats, send me a message. The Bucks will likely need neutering later on in life, so something to also think about.

They won't be leaving for another few weeks, so they are fully treated and have time to grow a bit more.

** WAITING LIST CLOSED **

Morning Everyone! This was something we were hoping to avoid but unfortunately, our waiting list will need to close.

We currently have 33 homes waiting for does and 36 homes waiting for bucks so we have made the decision to no longer accept new applications.

People who have applied before today and haven't get received a response will still be processed so don't worry if you are still waiting for a response.

Once we've managed to get some successful litters and clear off the list a bit we will re-assess whether to re-open or not.
There are excellent breeders up and down the country and rats travel extremely well so I'll drop a link to the NFRS Breeders list below

This was a year ago??? Raven hit 7 stars as we went into lockdown and would've got me my stud name I'm sure. Frustrating, however, it makes me feel one of the gang as nearly everyone has had that one rat one or two stars away. How I miss all my friends and socialising at shows! Seeing everyones good looking rats and keeping up to date with them all... hopefully not long guys!

We were at Scawsby dual show yesterday! And had a lovely time!

Raven (Azarath Metrion Zinthos) did super! Winning Black, Best Self and 3rd Supreme!!! For YRC and Black and Self in NFRS!

Kansas (Mimble Wayward Son) also did very well winning both Essex and Marked in both YRC and NFRS

Little Jynx (Azarath Bad luck) also ended up getting 1st in agility! For her first try she did very well!

A lovely worded post by Helen. Please, do some research and have some patience. We are constantly picking up the pieces in the area, whether taking in heavily pregnant kittens and raising litters, taking in hormonal bucks to neuter or getting much needed vet care, it becomes soul destroying when we cannot help, because we are already helping so many.

We have had quite the week here at Azarath. Things haven't exactly gone smoothly. Rat breeding is stressful, hard wearing and sometimes exhausting. I'm thankful all the does we mated up are doing well, but here is our journey since birthing.

Azarath Can't Fade Away (Terra) X Andromeda Zoidberg

Terra went into labour 7 days ago. She birthed 4 kittens, 2 of which had damaged tails. They were all well fed, Terra seemed well, so we left her for a few hours. When we came back a 5th kitten had been born, and it seems as though Terra had to pull this kitten through the birth canal as it was missing the tail and 1 back leg. They were big kittens, likely adding to the difficulty. Sadly this kitten did not make it and passed day 4. The remaining 2 bucks and 2 doe essex kittens are doing well and are big babies. Mum is amazing, super laid back and enjoying the time she gets with me.

Azarath Bad Luck (Jynx) x Mimble Wayward Son (Kansas)

Jynx had 5 kittens to start with, but with one heavily bruised who didn't make the night. The other 4 seemed to be thriving and then sadly 2 nights ago, another passed away. We're unsure why, but know it is a possibility to loose kittens early on, it just hurts that bit more since there weren't many. 1 buck and 2 doe essex kittens doing well and growing lovely. Jynx is a very attentive mum and has a tendency to fall fast asleep on her nest with her kittens around her.

We also mated up Raven, who unfortunately didn't birth any alive kittens. What a tough time it has been. I'm so thankful to all the support in the rat community. Every one of you.

Here are some of the week old kittens and photos of the different parenting styles of my 2 does.

Myself, Mimble Rattery (Helen Belton ) and Andromeda Rattery (Ellen Pascoe) have recently been discussing combining our waiting lists and have decided to do so. In order to do this we are going to set up a new waiting list group for people who do not yet have kittens. If you are on my list and still waiting for kittens can you please send me a message as to whether or not you are happy with me sharing your details with Ellen and Helen, and we will work on setting the new group up soon and add you to that. Thank you!

03/06/2020

This is Bella and Betty, 2 of the orphaned wild kittens we hand reared over here back in April 2019. They're such beautiful girls and I love getting updates of all the rats that come through Azarath. They were quite a bit of difference to our pet bred rats and it was very interesting to see those personalities and a brilliant learning curve. Since it is that time, I urge people, before picking up any wild kittens, to make sure mum isn't returning. It's very important that if they can, they stay in her care. It's also incredibly difficult to hand rear rats, especially ones you must keep in quarantine, not an easy feat, and one you can easily get wrong. We were very fortunate the kittens recieved a good start from mum and I had many other breeders to help, plus knowing how a mum usually looks after her kittens to ensure normality and help the kittens as best as possible. All 11 kittens survived, which we were surprised, but happy about!

Phee update! She has healed almost completely, though still has some fur to come through. She lost her condition a bit (some rusting),which is expected given what she went through. She is in full set up once again and is navigating brilliantly. She has adapted her tail to be her 4th leg when needed and uses her eye sight much more to map out which routes to take.

Such an incredible girl. Rats never cease to amaze me! ❤

Phee...

Last month we mated Azarath Phenomenally Fun (Phee) with Azarath Saber. Everything went super until 2 weeks into the pregnancy. Day 15 to be exact, Phee broke her leg. She broke her back left knee. We immediately separated her and popped her into a hospital cage and gave some pain medication. The next day, she went to the vets, where we went over all of our options. As I suspected, the knee break was pretty bad and a choice ad to be made to amputate. She had some more pain meds and came home with us for the night, before going into surgery the next day. Of course this meant we would have to help her reabsorb her kittens.

She had surgery Day 17, which all went okay she struggled with recovering a little, but thankfully not too bad. Her wound was lovely and neat. We were given a lot of pain meds for her and the galastop to be administered.

Her wound continued to heal very well and she enjoyed having her sister in as a nurse. Cat did super as her nurse and I'm very proud of them both.

Phee started spotting on day 22... this obviously was a worry, however we expected he to 'evacuate' any excess materials and such. She felt soft and carried n like normal and we thought that was that. It wasn't... somehow on day 24 she went into labour, and sadly gave birth to 6 dead kittens and 1 alive. This was a huge shock after going through all she had... the break, surgery and galastop!

The Alive kitten was rushed to Ellen at Andromeda Rattery, where her wonderful doe Indus took the kitten in (The galastop can cause a doe to stop lactating and Phee wasn't producing milk, and even if she was, 1 kitten is unlikely to sustain the milk supply). Indus was already fostering a few kittens as she had birthed herself to just 2 beans. Indus immediately took the kitten in without blinking. Later on that night when Ellen checked on everyone, sadly the kitten had not made it. It was however in amongst other kittens, warm and had been fed. We had tried, but everything it had already been through, had done some damage.

Phee after going through this all was very bruised and sore. She was immediately given pain medication and antibiotics just in case. After a week of rest with Cat and Terra as pals, she was introduced back into the full group.

This video is them in the Mamble, Phee getting climbing stuff for the first time since her operation. I have to say, I was rather emotional as it's been quite the journey. I'm very very proud of her and how she has done. We still have ways to go, but look at her getting around 🥰

A huge Thank you to ALL the support of my rat friends, from all the phone calls of me in panic, to wanting to alleviate my stress and fears. Both me and Phee can't thank you enough! Of course to Ellen and Indus. Big loves to you all.

Rescue kitten update! The kittens are doing fantastic, the mums are putting their all into making sure they grow well, unfortunately it is taking it's toll on the young mums, so I will likely remove mums as soon as kittens are weaned enough.

They also opened their peepers last night and the fun has just begun!

If anyone would like to have variety guesses, please do. We have a few ideas on some of them, but will be consulting other breeders to get a good idea of what each kitten is!

P.s Mums will be staying here, so I can make sure they have the easiest life possible.

Rescue Kitten update:

Sadly we lost one kitten today to Hydrocephalus. Hydro is essentially an accumulation of fluid in the brain. It can happen, sadly one of those things.

Remaining kittens are doing super, we made the decision to take some kittens from the mum with 13 kittens and pass them onto the mum with 7 kittens, as this mum had an abundance of milk and the other mum was struggling a bit. Better for everyone. Both mums are very happy!

We have many marked things, 2 PE things and a lot of Dumbos!

Sharing Andromeda, who is due rats soon, there may be a wait when kittens are at homing age, but Ellen Louise Pascoe will likely re-evaluate as time goes on.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak myself & the husband have decided we are currently not accepting visitors for the foreseeable future. We have vulnerable members of our family and feel we are responsible to keep them as safe as possible ❤

My waiting list is however open and all going well I should have kittens within the next 7-10 days. If you would like to join my form is below ( alternatively I can email you a copy if you prefer it old school )

I'll make sure I provide plenty of updates over the next few weeks ❤

Our first little rescue doe has given birth, thankfully nice and safely. She is also very keen to have cuddles and interact with me. She has birthed 13 kittens, I did a very quick.sex count, and we have 7 does and 6 bucks, but this was super fast. All are fed and mum is now enjoying some good food to help her recover.
