Hey There Friends! I am offering a couple of classes online that are rolling enrollment, you can start anytime! This one is for those who want to teach your dog to tell you what container is hot no matter WHAT YOU DO. Here is the info:

Give yourselves an early holiday gift and have FUN with containers!

Join us for my BEING A BAD HANDLER IN TRAINING SO YOUR DOG LEARNS TO STICK TO ODOR in spite of what you are doing out there. This class is a Facebook group.

This is a one-time fee of $125 which covers unlimited interaction with me, review and comments on your videos should you choose to put them up, all my training videos as well as additional content added as needed. The group will stay open indefinitely.

The great part is it's just one fee per household! These games are NOT about stomping on boxes or box destruction per se BUT done correctly, these games will greatly help with that. This teaches the dog to keep the NOSE on the box no matter what!

Feel free to message me or post here if you want more info or if you want to sign up! Your dog will thank you😄 — feeling excited.

What is nose work? Based on canine scent detection work, your dog is trained to recognize specific target odors, then hunt for those odors almost everywhere. This great new activity encourages searching inside, outside, in containers, and on vehicles too!

Nose work gives your dog the chance to "be a dog" and use her/his strongest sense: his sense of smell. This activity is naturally tiring and will leave your dog relaxed and happy! Best of all, you AND your dog will enjoy building teamwork. There is so much we can learn from our canine partners.

Nose Work can be transformative for shy, fearful, reactive, environmentally sensitive dogs as well as busy, energetic dogs who need a job to do. It's a four-season activity that can be done anywhere; indoors, outdoors, and in all types of weather including snow! For comfort and safety, dogs always work one at a time.

You will have many opportunities to work your dog and all of your questions will be answered.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THERE!

This gal is simply amazing. She catches dogs who have been on the run for days and weeks and months. Everything people believe about finding lost dogs is pretty much incorrect, well meaning, but incorrect. Dogs get almost feral in a matter of hours, and everything worries them into panic. Interesting study. As always, read with critical thinking cap on.

Humans have bred different lineages of domestic dogs for different tasks, like hunting, herding, guarding, or companionship. These behavioral differences must be the result of underlying neural differences, but surprisingly, this topic has gone largely unexplored. The current study examined whether....

Giving animals a choice and control takes some thought on the handler's part. It's well worth it from the animal's point of view for sure and makes our lives with animals much calmer and more joyful.

Sound take on proper socialization of dogs. Common sense and well reasoned by Denise Fenzi!

This article was first published several years ago; by request I am publishing it again. I am often asked how we should socialize our dogs so that they will grow up as well adjusted as possible. I think the answer is both simple and intuitive: The same way you socialize your small children. I know ....

No, not all dogs love having a new companion in the house, and yes, it is possible for pets to have panic attacks. Here's how to grow your pack smoothly.

Please share this life-saving information to anyone you know who may be adopting a dog!!!!!!!

Prevention is Key especially with the Clear the Shelters Event happening this weekend across the country. If you are planning on adopting a new family member we urge you to take a look at this poster and purchase the items on this list. Such a wonderful day can turn tragic in a blink of an eye.

We urge you to take a few extra minutes while you are still in the shelter to fit your martingale collar appropriately and attach your tags(your phone number and address will do) do not do this is the parking lot. Make sure you clip your leash on to the appropriate metal loop on the martingale collar. You should also double leash by using an appropraite slip leash that has a leather guide to tighten the leash to the size of your dogs neck.(some slip leashes are used only to go from indoor kennel to another indoor kennel not intended for outdoors.)

For the car trip home you should have your dog ride in an a travel crate or attached to a car clip seat harness. We prefer a crate, as you do not know how the dog will act in the car driving home. Before you open the door to your car, please make sure you have a hold of the leash, so your dog does not jump out the car door with leashes chasing behind. If you have a garage, pull into the garage and take the dog out of the car in the garage with all door shut.

GO DIRECTLY HOME< YOUR NEW DOG WILL PROBABLY BE SCARED! THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF TIME TO VISIT FRIENDS AND FAMILY! PLEASE DO NOT USE A RETRACTABLE LEASH UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
Please also educate yourself on how to use a martingale collar, and slip leash appropriately so you do not have equipment failure.
We also recommend getting a vet appointment within 48-72 Hours even if they are not due for any vaccines. When in the shelters that can possibly be exposed to many different parasites, etc.

PREVENTION IS KEY!

Truth about trust and shows how easily and quickly, and frequently unknowingly, we break that trust all the time.

Truth about trust and shows how easily and quickly, and frequently unknowingly, we break that trust all the time.

"I wish he would trust me" is something I hear over and over from handlers of fearful or anxious dogs. They seem to believe that a lack of trust in them prevents their dog from feeling more secure in the world. While it's true that having someone you trust with you in a scary situation is better than going it alone, trust is not a blanket to cover up unpleasant emotional states and/or lack of skills. But that's a topic for another time. What I'd like you to consider today is this: how do we earn and keep someone's trust?

Our cat Schrodinger is a big, athletic guy who uses his body with grace and ease. So my heart sank when I saw him holding up his right front paw. First, I didn't want him to be hurting or injured. Second, examining a hurting cat can be a bit of a tricky situation. How to get his cooperation without betraying his well established trust in me?

Trust is built when we really listen to - and *hear* - another being in a way that is clearly demonstrated in our behavior. I could have forcibly held Schrodinger, but instead, I opted to invite him up onto the kitchen table. I began with affectionate touch, stroking him on all healthy parts, and then gently began to check the injured leg. If he pulled away, I let him go and waited for him to come back to me, which he did within seconds. While he was walking away from me, I used that opportunity to carefully observe how he used his right front limb. I could see he was weight bearing, able to flex all joints, not a hair out of place except between two toes. Sometimes just using our eyes with focus and awareness lets us learn a lot without ever having to bother the animal.

It was tempting to just control his movements and get a good look at that foot directly. But that way is at best difficult for many animals, not just cats. It took a little creativity and a lot more time than grabbing and examinining, but I was able to get him to show me his foot in several ways. In the end, it was clear nothing was broken or infected or needing more than tincture of time and ongoing attention to how things were healing.

Most important for me, we ended our veterinary moment with no injury to his trust that I would listen to him and really hear him. Trust is so easily broken when we allow our goals, our "gotta get this done!" mindset to sail right past what our animals are telling us. Choose to be a trustworthy person in actions big and small. The animals are paying attention to who we tell them we are.
